Description
A finely made, long, opulent velvet coat suggests by it's lumpy pleats that a
myriad of trinkets, tools, and weapons lay waitng for their calling from this
tall, dark-skinned half-drow. The coat, obviously once red, it is now adorned
with scuffs, stains, and wear from years of continual use for which it was
not designed. protruding from it's hem are equally fine, and equally worn
brown leather knee boots. The layers of tanned, supple deer skin have been
sewn to the soles would allow this light-footed fellow to move about in
virtual silence were it not for his frequent bursts of laughter at his own
jokes, some more deserved than others. Black curly locks frame Tummel's
chiseled, hairless face, and a blue velvet captain's hat tops his six foot
frame. The well-crafted hat, it's plumes of feathers and gilded brim
suggesting it was made for ceremony, would not look out of place on the
Sultan's finest sea vessel.
Just before you look away, he catches your eye.

Tummel's Background

Try as she might, Tummel's mother could not support him and his sister by
herself. Nor did she have anyone to turn to, as she had been branded a deviant
for marrying a dark-elf. Since his father was killed by some over-zealous
crusaders who could not see past his drowish complexion, the farm had fallen
into a state of disrepair. The crops failed and his mother could not repay the
family debts. Faced with debtors prison, she knew what would likely happen to her
children. Kirsa, just eight years old, would be relegated to the orphanage, which
was a thinnly desguised brothel for the many perverts that frequent Hamsah's port.
The boy, Tummel, would eventualy be forced into the imperial army to die for the
vanity of an Emperor he would never meet from some palace he would never see. She
had no choice.
As her life was being ripped assunder, she made a desperate decision she hoped
would save her children. The law allowed a debtee's child or spouse serve their
time in prison while they worked to repay the debt. Tummel's mother turned him
over to the court and would sell her virtue on the streets of Hamsah to raise
enough coins to buy his freedom.
He understood why he was going to prison, and that he would be with his mother
and sister again soon, though that knowledge made the ordeal no less lonely and
terrifying for an eight year old boy who had seen a happy life with a loving
family disintegrate in a matter of months. He hated the guards, the "food", the
cell he shared with scoundrels, riff-raff, stow-aways, and just about anyone else
who hadn't done quite enough to warrant their execution. His mother would visit
him every chance that she could afford. The boat ride was not cheap. In fact, she
had a deal with the captain and could sometimes barter her "services" for passage.
At first, she would come every few weeks, then once a month, then every few
months, finally stopped coming altogether. It had been nine years since Tummel
had seen his mother and sister. Still, as he had done a thousand nights before, he
would fall asleep listening to the waves break on the rocks below the prison walls
and imagine his mother approaching the island, waving from the bow of a ship that
would never come.
Tummel's Background II
Added Mon Sep 14 15:47:22 2015 at level 27:
As the years passed, Tummel's prison became a home. People would come and go from
all over Thera and he would learn what he could from them. He had a close knit
group of inmates that looked out for each other and eventually became respected
and feared among them and the rest of the population. He became as well educated
as one could get in prison and was eceptionally gifted when it came to the skills
that are called for in such a place.
They came before dawn with madness intheir eyes. Some bureaucrat had decided that
the relative isolation and low-profile of this island was better suited to hold a
Harbinger of the Tree than the Sultan's conspicuous, but well fortified, prison in
Hamsah. Well, the Outlanders are a crafty bunch and it doesn't take them long to
find their own. Why they only sent their wizards is unclear. What is clear is that
no more were needed. The "wizards of the wilds" as they are now known to the
prisoners who survived, wreaked the kind of destruction that only those unburdened
by civility and burning with unbridled rage can muster. The prison was no more. Not
even the island on which it sat survived. When they were finished, they took
surviving prisoners back to the mainland. Tummel tried to treat the wounds of those
he knew, but lacked the tools and expertise to save them. The wizards would not
help. Though they would have liked to see them drowned, for some reason, they
seemed obligated to ferry the inmates to shore. Tummel could see the sprawling port
as they approached shore. So much had changed.
Tummel's class, politics, alignment, sphere, and ethos
Added Mon Sep 14 15:51:33 2015 at level 27:
To be clear, Tummel holds no grudge against the Outlanders for trying to rescue
their Harbinger, but detests the wizards for their wanton destruction. Why he has
come to hate magic over the subsequent years instead of embracing it for freeing him
is twofold. First, the reckless attack on what Tummel considered his home had killed
many about whom he cared deeply, and the wizards had no remorse. And though the
second reason has profoundly influenced his life since he left the island, he is
completely unaware of it. It exists only in his sub-conscious, free from the burdens
of logic and reason: because Tummel was forced to leave the prison, his mother will
not know where to find him.
Tummel's transition from prison to the thief guild of Galadon was an easy one. He was
known by those who frequented the prison and his skills and leadership were welcomed.
His time on the island taught him to be patient, to make as many friends as you can
(even among your enemies), and that while coins are usefull, respect is the real
currency of his trade. Still wary of incarceration, Tummel keeps a low profile. He is
seen when he wants to be. He observes. He gets to know his enemies. He talks to them
and may follow them around. He is trustworthy, and views those that are not with
disdain, but will guard his intentions, or any information for that matter, if it
could be used against him. For these reasons, his sphere is concealment. He values
well made and executed plans and believes most battles are won or lost before the
sword is drawn.
Good and evil are abstracts without much meaning for Tummel. He seeks respect, not
salvation. And while he finds the extremes of both distasteful, he has a kind heart
and is drawn to helping the down-trodden and persecuted. He sees laws as arbitrary
and counter-productive to his personal goals, but chooses to work within the system
to avoid scrutiny.
