Description
A smallish giant is here, only standing two fathoms tall. The shifting light
catches his pearly skin, as it shimmers between blue and pink, but always a
pale cream. Despite his small stature, his muscles are stretched taught,
bound tightly like the rigging of a ship of sale. Maritime tattoos cover
exposed skin, done in a highly detailed and professional fashion. Ham cans
for fists, written on each digit is a tattoo that spells 'Hold Fast.'
Sitting atop his body, like a square top sheet, is a square set face, with
wind carved features. As if chiseled from the waves themselves, a neat beryl
beard is bound into a single braid that hangs below his chest. His broad
nose, bisects two golden orange eyes, reminiscent of a setting sun and rising
moon on the horizon at sea. Bound back, like the tide receding is a second
similar braid, pulling every strand taught from atop his head, so no loose
hairs remain. His wears are of equal decoration, the leathers well greased,
and metal polished to a shine.
Role
Born a Sailor.

I was born upon the rolling waves, and it was told my first steps happened
upon the planks rocking motion. For so many, it takes weeks, months, even
years to get their sea legs beneath them, for me, the stillness of the land
has always unsettled me. I witnessed many come and go from the ships, unable
to take to the seas, yet for me, it was home, my only home.
It is a little known fact, but most sailors do not know how to swim. If you
were swimming you did something wrong. I always found this fascinating and
took every opportunity to dive in the waves, to feel the pull of the water,
was as exhilarating as feeling the wind toss a boat. On the other hand,
perhaps this was why I was always volunteered to clean the hull.
My first lessons I remember so dearly to this day, were of the stars. My
mother was the navigator for years upon Hammerly, the Sultan's War Barge. She
held such prestige for her skill with the Captain, he would not leave her in
port to tend to her child. Either that, or he feared defection, or her skills
being impressed to serve more nefarious masters.

Upon Hammerly, I learned many more lessons, beyond just navigating a vessel,
or spotting the dangers lurking beneath the waves. As soon as I was strong
enough apply pressure, I was instructed on how to bind wounds of the injured.
I was reminded all too often that it was a ship of war. This led to an early
entrance into the Healers Guild.
The World According to Maps.

Growing up the son of a navigator, it was no wonder I took to the parchment
with ease. Maps are a thing of beauty, even the most mundane are a labor of
love. Without them, the world would be lost, relying upon the confusing
directions passed through voice, and lost to memory.
Maps are a precious thing. A ship without one, is as good as wrecked upon the
reef. Like a blind vole, the world would wander through beaten paths and
uncharted wilderness, yet with a map, anyone can be armed with knowledge.
It is true, that having a map is only half the battle. Maps can be drawn to
mislead, or portions lost to antiquity, leaving room for interpretation and
conclusions. Also, one must know how to read a map, and apply it to where one
is, in order to know where one is going or where they have been. But a
well-drawn map, even a child should be able to safely traverse the perils of
Thera.
Pieces Falling into Place.

So many in Thera insist on an order, hierarchical, sequential, logical. As
soon as an element is missing, or misplaced, the denizens go into a tizzy,
unable to see a larger picture.
I have friends, who had children, acquired a home, and then realizing their
profound love for each other, wedded. Are the elements of this happily ever
after there? Yes. Are they in the order one would have predicted? No.
Some may see my life's journey as such. It was after gaining much confidence
in my guild, that the shape of my lifes journey could start to be
discerned. Aiya, the High Herald, went out on a limb, not only to invite one
whose guild is often represented by zealots and extremists, but to offer a
position within the Inn of the Eternal Star to one who had not yet received
the blessings of the gods. Perhaps in this age, that is less important, but
to many, it is still of great significance.
Then finally, after working my art, and advancing more, did I find Curator of
the Eternal Library, Ishuli. And perhaps it was, in hindsight, most suiting
to do so. We bantered about the seas, and about agreements between mortals
and dwellers of Asgaard. Finally, we came to an agreement in exchange for my
services to fill her library with nautical wonders, I would receive her
blessing. To seal the deal, my first work of art, by far not my best but
indicative of the ability to think abstractly, was given to her.
So, what is Order, when it is turned on its head? A library full of works yet
to be refiled, heaped on a cart. All of the essential elements are there,
though it may take a little searching.
