Description

A stout dwarf stands before you with wildly unkempt shoulder length curly crimson hair. He is almost four feet tall with big aquamarine eyes that appear slightly off center. His nose is quite large and hooks to one side. You think he might be missing a tooth or two but it is hard to see under his distinguished beard that is also crimson in color. His beard is the only thing about him having undergone any upkeep. His torso, arms, and legs are stout and show years of training and work. His dark complexion is covered in soot and you wonder about the last time he had a bath.

Role

Magma

Some mistakenly think the elements are reserved for magic.  
Varnon knows this is not true.  For his race, the dwarves, are 
of the earth themselves.  They have long mined the earth.  They
work and shape the earth to create impressive armors and weapons.
The earth though needs fire to shape it into something usable.
The fire purifies the earth by destroying it and bring it back again in a 
new form.  While each of these elements alone are strong and impressive.
It is the combination of the two that can cause the most destruction.  For 
magma is much more powerful than either earth or fire could ever be alone.  
unleashed magmas fury is not be underestimated.  Magma is chaotic and
unyielding.  


Like magma, Varnon is made of the earth itself.  He is chaotic and burns with a
fire from within.  Varnon seeks the destruction of those that are against him and 
his goals.  He is unyielding, like the magma itself.  Varnon has always been 
strong willed, even in the simple early days.  For Varnon was raised in Akan as a 
normal dwarf to a miner father and a blacksmith mother.  Varnon trained for the 
first 30 years of his life to be a blacksmith, but his inner fire always wanted 
more.  Varnon could never harness what needed to be done.  He was too 
unfocused and chaotic to ever be a good blacksmith, but his mother kept 
training him for that and mining are the only things his family had ever done.

War

One day when he was 30 years old, Varnon was put in charge of a traveling party
that would need to travel to Arkham to trade for some rare Holmium metal that his 
mother needed for a special weapon for the king.  Varnon had been a on a couple 
travel parties, but never as far as Arkham and never the lead.  When they got close 
to Arkham they were ambushed by several fire giant magi.  These magi ending up 
killing all 5 others of the travel party.  Only Varnon was left alive but he was 
brought back to one of the fire giant magis dwelling inside the mountain.  Varnon 
spent the next 10 years being tortured by every type of magic known.  He endured 
every horror that can be imagined.  The magic was so tainted and unpure that 
Varnon was scared by it. After a while, he got used to being so close to something 
so unnatural, but he never stopped hating it.  Still he pressed on and looked for 
ways to escape.  Finally the day came  when the giant made a mistake and feel 
asleep after too much ale, but forgot to properly restrain Varnon.  Varnon waited 
until late in the night and snuck out.  Now Varnon is a dwarf and stealth has 
never been a strength of his, but somehow he did what must be done.  He 
escaped, grab some seaweed the giant magi had and made his way out avoiding 
several streams of lava along the way.  He was briefly mesmerized by the fury and 
power of the magma in the mountain, but he did not stay long and barely made it 
out of the mountain and down the side.  He headed home empty handed for he 
had lost the money, 5 dwarven lives, and 10 years of his life.

War (Part 2)

When he got home, he was a changed dwarf.  He tried to pick up where he left
off learning the blacksmith trade, but soon realized he had to do something else
with his life.  He had to avoid that helpless feeling and he had to fight the greater
war against magic.  He went to the town warriors guild and asked to be trained.  
Akans guild master said he would make a fine town guard and offered to train him.
Varnon said he would not be a town guard but would leave Akan after some basic
training with the lesser goal of avenging his mates death and the greater goal of
destroying magi through war.  For his rage has great and this was something that
he had to do.  So training in weapons he got, while he was still young and still
a novice, he picked up on it quickly and soon left Akan.  He would return over
the years to visit but would never again call it his home.

War (Part 3)

He first made his way to Vorilian and found Erenthell.  While the old elf offered to
train him, Erenthell looked down on the dwarf as lowlie.  Furthermore he
always seemed to be judging Varnon for his immoral ways.  While Varnon was
no dark heart or anything, he just did not let morality enter into his decision making.
Varnon saw the world with a moral indifference.  So Varnon only training under
Erenethell for a brief while.  Soon he left for a fortress outpost to the west name, 
Tir Talath.  He was told there was a former knight of thera member name Derrick
that might train him and could possibly provide insight into others that sought
magics destruction.  

When Varnon finally got to Tir Talath and the warriors guild, he saw this old human
man standing before him.  While Varnon initially did not think much of this
old man, he soon learned to respect him.  While still a light walker too concerned with
morality, Derrick did not judge him like the elf did.  Varnon decided this is where he would
make his home.  Varnon trained hard and trained long and soon it was time to
travel out and seek adventure and fight the wars, his war.  He found the lyceum
in his early travels and read about the mighty battleragers.  This loose outlaw bands of
magic haters seem just what he was looking for.  He would seek them out and seek
out the war against magic and bring about its destruction.  Like magma, Varnon
would unleash his fury on those that aided magic.

The Story of Varnon's Hut

In these lean times where more are sticking to farming and mining
then going to war, Varnon found few mages to hunt and the ones
that were around cloaked themselves from his sight.  Finally after
a couple years of trying, Varnon claimed his first skull in his personal
wars.  After collecting the skull, Varnon visited Tahren and discussed
and swore his oath by Bolthrowers Axe.  Then Varnon sat in his guild 
and wrote a missive on some of the histories that had been passed down
to him.  He mentioned such village legends as Throc, Thrym, Guerric and
The commander, Ahjevil, read this missive and immediately
called him to the village.  

The commander immediately grilled Varnon on the names he mentioned
and asked for detailed story of what these legends had done as mortals
in the village.  Stumbling for words, it became apparent that Varnon knew
of these legends but did not know about these legends.  The commander 
gave Varnon two choices.  One, he could wait for his hut and write three 
average stories about three of these legends, or two, he could get his hut
now and write one epic story.  Varnon would not want to settle for mediocrity
so he chose the latter.  It took Varnon a few months, as he read the 
lores in the hut of remembrance, in the lyceum, and talked to the elder dwarves
in Akan.  When ready he submitted the missive and waited for the commander.
When the commander read it he asked if he was satisfied that this was an epic story.
While Varnon did not believe it was, he said yes with conviction.  The commander
smirked and told him to send the story of Geurrics courage to the entire village.

Weapon Specializations and Legacies

When Varnon reached the 20th rank, he and his guildmaster discussed
which weapon he would specialize in.  In Varnons early years he
struggled to keep his foes in place with only trip or bash, so his
guildmaster suggested a cranial technique in which the mace or hammer
was swung at the top of the head of a foe.  Furthermore, the guildmaster
felt that boneshatter would be useful to weaken and slow the opponent and 
drum would probably lots of damage at one time.  These appealed to Varnon
so he could now smash skulls literately.

When Varnon reached the 40th rank, he and his guildmasgter discussed the
second weapon in which he would specialize in.  Varnons guildmaster tried
to advise him on something other than swords, but Varnon was determined
to try them as he was looking for something more defensive in times of trouble.
Later years would show that Varnon never trusted his swords over maces.  His
guildmaster encouraged him to go with flails or hands, but Varnon was like most
dwarves stubborn to the end.  Varnon did try to go back to his guildmaster and 
relearn another weapon, but his guildmaster said it was too late and another 
weapon would just confuse him further.

A few years later at the 44th and 48th rank, he and his guildmaster discussed which
legacies of great warriors past he would learn.  The guildmaster indicated the 
optimum number was 2.  Varnon decides on Whispers of the Great Siege as his
first choice as he waited out and survived the fire giants way back when he was 
tortured for 10 years, never giving up.  Learning to eat on less and fight hard to 
recover quicker from the torture.  This legacy training spoke to Varnona so that 
was his first.  The second selection proved to be more difficult.  Varnon considered
gates, surrounding, and riddle before deciding on the power and fury of his warcry. 
The warcry always provided Varnon with much inspiration before a battle in
his glorious wars, so he sought to refine it even further.

Drillmaster and Commander

One day Varnon awoke to news the Urgandtol had given up his hut
and had gone back to farmer forever. Never to be heard from again.
While Varnon could never envision giving up on something as 
glorious as war, not everyone was cut out to fight this fight until
the end of their days.  

A year or so later, the commander Ahjevil asked Varnon a question.
Who would Varnon recommend for the next drillmaster?  Varnon did not
hesitate, as he knew the commander liked confidence and a firm decision,
when he said he was the best choice for drillmaster.  No one is awake more 
often, fights with more persistence, strives to be the best, and tries hard
to maintain honor said Varnon.  Additional, Varnon said he is a student of history. 
Adhevil said didnt that history thing get you in trouble.  Varnon said what one 
person views as trouble, another might view as an opportunity.  A couple months 
went by and Varnon was greeted with the imposing presence of Lord Verathi.  Even 
through Varnon was intimidated by the Lord presence, Varnon fumbled his
way through the induct of being drillmaster.

Over the next several months, Varnon noticed the commander dying more, taking
more chances, and being in a sour mood more often.  One day Varnon awoke to
the news that the commander Ahjevhil had gone back to farmer forever as well.
Lord Verathi came down again and his time removed the drillmaster position from
Varnon and said he did not think he would have to do this so soon.  While dying inside
at the thought he did something wrong, Varnon was soon surprised that Lord Verathi 
made him commander.  Varnon and the Lord spoke of several issues on that day.  One of
them was War.  More specifically the Tribunal War.
