Role
To defy.
Added Wed Jul 9 15:23:06 2025 at level 28:
I have an enemy.
Or perhaps that is too personified.
An adversary, maybe. Yes. This is better.
The scale of the challenge is one hard to grasp for me.
An ant besides the swamp?
No. Beside every blade of grass within all the swamps?
Still, no. Against all the shining stars in the night's sky?
Closer.
It is not a war I can win, but then, how can one war against it? If it is
so, then it simply is; and if it is a thing which can be opposed, it is not.
Perhaps the proving of the latter is what really matters. To know that the
world is cruel by chance, and not by design. To know that one may spit in
the face of destiny and not have it go unanswered. To know that the path
may be set down, but those with the will to defy may step from well worn
soil and into that most fairest and kindest cruelty: uncertainty.
Is that not better?
To know that your suffering is a thing of poor misfortune, that you have
rolled the bones and they have tumbled in disaster, rather than to know
that all your pain and woe is a thing ordained?
I think so.
But I did not always.
Of grand endeavours.
Added Wed Jul 9 15:27:03 2025 at level 28:
Vashaxa concentrated.
This was important.
Really important.
If he wasn't a saurian, doubtless he'd have been sweating. Yet reptilian as
he was, the young boy could only grit his small and not big yet at all
teeth and focus with all that he had on the task to come.
Carefully, with all the profound triumph of one meant for greatness, his
hand moved, and he let out a sigh of victory.
A shadow fell over him.
Vashaxa looked up, and his scaled visage split into a grin as his mother
looked down on him with an indulgent (and far more impressively fanged)
smile.
"Look! Look!"
With the gravitas unique to small children everywhere, Vashaxa pointed at
his masterpiece, and his mother crouched down next to him in the grass to
observe his genius.
"Its amazing!" she kindly lied.
The stick figure drawn in the mud was charitably saurian-esque, in the same
way that excessive paint thrown at a wall was vaguely painting-esque. The
proportions were all wrong. The eyes were half of what was assumedly the
face, and the hands were mostly just vague blobs as its creator had
seemingly realised that he wasn't quite sure how hands were supposed to
work yet.
"Its you!" the exuberant child declared, giving insults which can only be
seen as endearing in one's progeny.
"It looks just like me," his mother invented as she swept up her aspiring
artist in her arms. "Its time to eat now though. Your father has returned
from his trip."
Vashaxa rested his chin on her shoulder and wrapped his small arms around
her neck. "Love you."
"And I love you too, my little artist," she said as she turnd away from the
picture in the grass. "You've got a gift!"
And that, at least, was true.
What went wrong?
Added Wed Jul 9 15:29:28 2025 at level 28:
If you're asking me if we ever suspected what he would become, the answer
is no.
I ask myself that question often. Could we have done something else? What
was it that let the rot into his heart? Where did we go wrong? He was
always such a happy child. So full of Sra. They say some of the tribes in
the homeland can't even conceive of Weh, and I never really believed it.
But if it was so, then that boy was well on that road. His father was never
around much, one of those adventurer types, you know. Some kind of priest.
But that's not that unusual these days.
I still don't have an answer. I just can't imagine that young boy who cried
when his mother fell victim to those vile spiders from the southern forests
becoming... this. Weh can be harsh in how it teaches its lessons to all of
us, but especially to the young, and having to see something like that...
Its awful. I know it is. But I do wonder sometimes if it would have been
better if the hunters hadn't been quick enough to save him.
Still...
There was real sorrow there. I've seen a lot in my time, and that boy was
devastated.
You have to believe me.
We didn't know.
We didn't.
- A saurian villager, responding to questions from those seeking answers.
Hollow.
Added Wed Jul 9 15:31:45 2025 at level 28:
Vashaxa could not draw anymore.
It had been a long time since his pictures in the mud had been
unrecognisable disasters. His mother had spoken true when she had claimed
he had a gift for it.
Yet now they were again.
His hands shook too much. The lines weren't straight. The angles were all
wrong. There was a great sucking hole inside his chest, and his ability to
draw had fallen in along with so much else.
How could this have happened?
How?
The beauty of the village was lost to him, and everywhere he turned he saw
only decay. Memories become rotting fruit upon the vine of grief.
So Vashaxa sat, and did not draw, and struggled to pull the warm blanket
that was Sra about him, that tranquil peace that reminded him so much of
his mother.
But the Sra did not answer.
It never would again.
Growing up.
Added Wed Jul 9 15:33:30 2025 at level 28:
He was never quite the same, you know?
No, not like that. He didn't suddenly transform over night! The cycle
changes us all, and some more than others.
But there were no more smiles. He talked less. Became more thoughtful,
maybe. Those pretty eyes became a little... frightening.
I know, I know. How can a child's eyes be frightening? Maybe they weren't.
Maybe I'm just saying that now because of how it all turned out.
Honestly? We thought he was just growing up. Some things make you grow up
faster, and lessons can be forced on you early.
Anything strange?
Hmm... no. Not really. I remember his father dropped by once or twice but
never stayed long. I wonder if they argued, now that you mention it. I
don't think so, though. They usually just talked. Talked alot, now that you
mention it, but... that's not really strange now, is it?
The Adversary(1/2).
Added Wed Jul 9 15:39:58 2025 at level 28:
Shuffle. Shuffle. Draw.
Vashaxa was alone once more.
The other young saurians avoided him, now. Vashaxa didn't mind. When he
looked at them he only saw slaves, after all. Slaves to the Adversary.
His father had spoken with him at length of the Adversary these last visits,
though of course he had not called it such. Of how it can be hard to
accept that some things are simply to be, but in the acceptance of them can
be found peace. Of how the Adversary and the cycle are intertwined, and how
the natural order is a thing to be embraced and not disdained.
Shuffle. Shuffle. Draw.
Once upon a time, Vashaxa may have been receptive to such wisdom. When Sra
had come to him so easily, when the joy of life had been everywhere he
looked: such knowledge would have found fertile soil.
But Vashaxa saw only decay, now. Decay, and ghosts, and the Adversary's
cruel and unfeeling hand. The Weh did not yet draw in about him, for there
were no places where it hung heavy within the village.
It would, though. Vashaxa knew it with the absolute certainty that he had
once known Sra.
And yet this brought him nothing in the way of joy or worry, and not even
grief held sway upon him to any great degree any longer.
Shuffle. Shuffle. Draw.
Instead, within that sucking hole that lay beneath his ribs, a cold flame
of something terrible had been lit. Sparked by teachings given with good
intentions and twisted by a mind made fragile by the ravages of traumatic
bereavement.
They'd spoken often of fate these last two visits. Of how some things were
simply meant to be. Of coming to accept them, even when they were painful.
Of coming to terms with what was meant for you in life.
Of how one could read the omens and the signs, and even, like his father,
see further if they were to pursue the path of revelation.
Vashaxa had nodded, and listened, and agreed: but only to learn more.
For Vashaxa knew, with a certainty greater than he had ever known for
anything else: this was wrong.
This was not how it should be.
What of agency? What of choice? Was it right to simply accept that this is
how it was, and would be, and must be? That the picture of your deeds was
already drawn, and the moment of Weh's coming laid out before it even
begins?
Vashaxa could not accept that.
No. That was wrong too.
Vashaxa would not accept that.
He would learn of the Adversary's tools, and thwart it at every turn he
could.
Even if that Adversary was Fate itself.
He stared down at his hands as they shuffled the cards his father had
gifted him before leaving.
One of the lower forms of divination, made in the image of an artefact of
great power, or so his father had claimed. Vashaxa would need to seek that
in time. He'd learned though. Learned the meanings his father had known,
and had been all too happy to teach.
The Adversary(2/2).
Added Wed Jul 9 15:42:43 2025 at level 28:
Vashaxa thought that should make him sad. That his father was one of the
Adversary's pawns, and so would be one of his foes.
It didn't though.
After all, if his father was a priest of revelation, gifted with the
oracles sight and glimpses of the strands of destiny.
Then why had he not saved Vashaxa's mother?
Why had he allowed Vashaxa to become so hollow?
Had he seen and done nothing?
Had he not cared to look.
Shuffle. Shuffle. Draw.
Vashaxa pondered which option was worse.
The first, he thought. Indifference was a choice, but to let matters
proceed ordained was a thing beyond the pale.
So he shuffled, and drew, and thought dark thoughts.
The Outsider.
Added Wed Jul 9 15:47:47 2025 at level 28:
He wasn't one of them anymore.
He could tell. They could tell.
Vashaxa sat, the now somewhat battered cards slipping easily between his
claws. Noone approached. Noone looked his way for more than but a moment.
Regretful glances, sometimes. Pitying glances, sometimes.
They did not understand.
Soon he would leave. He had known this for some time. The Adversary could
not be fought from the village. The secrets of the most malign force in all
Creation would not be found here.
Shuffle. Shuffle. Draw.
He didn't need to look down. It was almost always the same one. More and
more he doubted if there was any power in these cards at all. And yet...
He sighed softly as he watched the villagers go about their empty little
lives. Those things which had once made him smile and laugh now all seemed
so pointless. So directed. Like characters in a story already written.
How had he never seen it before?
His hands paused in their perpetual motion.
Perhaps...
Perhaps one needed to be on the outside looking in to truly see. But how
does one step outside the cycle?
Long after most had left to slumber and the night drew in about the young
saurian did Vashaxa remain, the wheels of a mind turned from the carefree
to the maudlin ever turning over the consideration.
Then, at last, as twilight turned to darkest night and silence fell did he
once more begin the process of reading, hands moving in familiar patterns
as he shuffled, shuffled, drew.
This time, he studied the first card, and was unsurprised to see the well worn face of the hanged man looking up at him.
Surrender. Let go.
"No."
With an at last unshaking hand, he began to draw his damnation.
As the darkest hour of the night arrived, Vashaxa raised his pen from the
card defaced, and gazed upon his work.
It would need a name.
"The Iconoclast."
Rejection. Subversion. Ruin.
"Yes."
Vashaxa tossed the rest of the cards into the river.
And left.
Chapter summary.
Added Wed Jul 9 15:50:57 2025 at level 28:
1. A prologue of sorts, just gives some context for his views in his own
words. Set after all the other chapters though technically.
2. Vashaxa grows up a happy child in the Saurian village with his mother,
having a love for drawing and an extremely deep affinity with Sra.
3. The village gossip talks about how they never saw evil in Vashaxa and
how he was shattered with grief when the spiders from the Spiderhaunt
killed his mother in front of him (understandably tbf).
4. Vashaxa is devastated, unable to draw anymore and unable to coalesce Sra
having had such a profoundly extreme introduction to Weh.
5. The same villager explains that Vashaxa did not suddenly just transform
over night, but became withdrawn and more thoughtful after talks with his
adventurer father (a revelation shaman).
6. Vashaxa finds something repulsive in the idea of Fate, the notion that
everything is destined leading him to the conclusion that it is an
imposition against free will. He seeks to learn all he can of the force
from the resources available to him.
7. Now an outsider among the Saurians, Vashaxa comes to realise that you
can not truly understand something until you step outside it and observe it.
Hence he resolves to step out the cycle so that he may gain insight. Some
other stuff here, mostly setup for future plans.
Character Sheet(1/2).
Added Wed Jul 9 15:56:08 2025 at level 28:
- Vashaxa is a saurian who has become very opposed to the notion of fate
and is big on free will. He seeks to undermine fate and find ways to
subvert its workings through what he sees as a far less malign force, that
of Chaos (cruelty via predestined vs cruelty via chance).
- Playing a bit with the idea of what happens when an ultra Sra aligned
saurian gets really slapped in the face in a horrific way with the opposite
concept when young. I feel like it probably knocks a few screws loose.
General rp angle:
- He seeks to subvert the destined course of things whenever he can, both
in himself and in others. This might manifest in various ways, be it
generally causing discord, making people question their beliefs, etc. Going
to try to get his claws into everyone's business and cause trouble
basically.
- If things particularly resonate with him he will make a card for it (will
make these with pen and such). Long term goal here is to make a twisted
mirror of the Deck of Fate, so just versions of the major arcana since I
don't know if their are canonical references to the lesser one in CF. Will
do more with this as that develops but its likely going to take a while.
- He's big on duality in general, influenced by his upbringing. Sra and Weh,
Fate and Chaos, etc. He'll try to fit things into this worldview perhaps
when he shouldn't.
Likes:
- Drawing.
Dislikes:
- Fate ('the Adversary').
- Spiders big and small, he has arachnophobia.
- Revelation shamans, zero tolerance. All his hate. Only case where I could
see this not being an instantly murderous relationship would be if he
thought he could get them to abandon the path, which he'd be super happy
about.
- Rarywey priests of any flavour. Oracles? Guided by visions? This will
absolutely get his blood boiling.
- Notably, he does not dislike sphere fate people. He pities these greatly
believing they're the most shackled by his nemesis of all, and may actually
go out of his way to try to help them more than other people. The
distinction is if you choose to be fate aligned voluntarily.
- Aaaaand... probably most Scions. He'll pay lipservice here believing
learning the secrets that he seeks is worth the price, but he'll try to
undermine and overcome any Scions who 'slavishly' follow the prophecy word
for word.
Cabal:
Scion. I want to focus heavily upon the prophecy side of things, since I
don't see it explored much. He's interested in Scion for two reasons:
1. He wishes to study their art of divination at length, believing it is
yet another tool of fate that he must learn to subvert (if it has not been
already, and if it has, he needs to learn how).
2. The big one, the prophecy. As probably the most well known and infamous
prophecy in all of Thera, he believes he can learn many things about how
Fate actually functions on a grand scale if he can understand even small
parts of it.
Character Sheet(2/2).
Added Wed Jul 9 15:57:43 2025 at level 28:
It is worth noting that the Eternal Night itself is not something at the
early stages he feels strongly about either way. The fulfillment of the
prophecy would be something that he would not like (seeing it as a triumph
for fate), but if he believes he can make his own alteration to the
prophecy and subvert it even a little bit, he'd be all in on that
possibility as it would be a huge triumph. So basically starting out, this
is very up in the air and I don't know where it'll come down.
Class: Necromancer. He's been taught that the natural cycle of things is
life and death like all saurian, but believes you cannot truly understand
something while a part of it. Hence he wishes to step outside the cycle of
life and death (undeath) on his quest for insight.
Religion: Ocaiye. As the only overtly chaos aligned god, Vashaxa will
probably end up a bit of a fanatic here, though of course an ill informed
one potentially as... I completely understand Ocaiye is dormant and I will
likely get zero interaction and am fine with that, I'll pray etc for the rp
but expect nothing and be very happy if that turns out not to be the case!
Sphere: Chaos. Overarching goal is ultimately to try to play a compelling
character of this sphere that doesn't end up in chaotic stupid land. He'll
appear as sphere fate early on, as studying fate is his focus and he's not
going to be confident enough in his power starting out to make his
declarations openly decrying it. Views Chaos as a foil to Fate, rightfully
or wrongfully (introducing uncertainty into perceived certainty).
Lastname: none, voluntarily cut ties with his past connections. Might take
one later if something happens, but nothing as things stand.
Strange things.
Added Wed Jul 16 03:38:29 2025 at level 34:
Many strange things have happened to me.
Meeting the Advisor. This was strange. To be seen but to be looked through
by one who has walked this road before. What does she see? I wished to ask,
but thought to have more time.
This opportunity is gone. One more cruel stroke of the Adversary's hand,
but this does not matter. I will see myself in time, perhaps.
Setting my claws upon the first remains and making of it a servant.
This was strange. At once of Weh, and at once repugnant. It mildly disgusts
me still, though I know not why. The afront to the cycle, as some have said?
No. There will be worse before the end. This, I must think on. Perhaps
there is something to learn from this strange experience, so oft repeated
now and yet still the same.
The battles I find myself in. These too are strange. I think I am a poor
student of violence, but this is fine. I will learn, for the Adversary's
pawns are everywhere and full of strange ideas.
The Chasm. Perhaps one of the strangest of all. Much knowledge is here, and
when I sit and think within the deep places my scales itch. I feel that
something is just out of reach. A revelation? No. Revelations are the tools
of the Adversary and cannot be trusted. Insight. Yes, this is better. A
place where much can be learned, and I must often clean my claws from the
divining that I do.
I shall speak more on this soon.
All of these things are strange, and all of them are currents within the
great river that is the Adversary's cruel design. Still flowing and full of
destiny's most monstrous poison. But are any the strangest?
No. This is not so. The strangest was a discussion held in an inn.
It was a challenge. A test of knowing. I knew none of it, but this is not
strange. They spoke of things long consigned to the cycle, and while
history may yet hold answers, it is fixed. Unchanging. The hand of Chaos
may have drawn the picture, but it is now set.
A strange distinction. But this feels right, and so I do not care.
And yet in my indifference ignorance on these matters of consigned divine,
the strangest part was a question asked to me alone.
Are there any who yet abide within the cycle who I could align myself with?
I asked myself why I had never turned my thoughts to the matters of worship.
To seek guidance from those closer to the fundamental nature of the cycle
than all others.
Had my father's servitude to the Adversary poisoned this well?
Had it simply never occurred to me?
Is this the Adversary's work, to cloud the crossroads so only one path
seems clear?
None? All?
It does not matter.
For there is one, a patron of the force which may yet break the Adversary's
hold.
So I shall seek her.
People and paranoia.
Added Sat Jul 19 00:08:51 2025 at level 36:
Few as they are, my fellow Scions are not what I expected.
I see little of fervour concerning the Prophecy of the Night. On one hand,
this pleases me. The Adversary does not have quite the foothold in these
magi as I expected.
On the other. This is not good, for there are only few reasons why this
might be so:
First, ignorance. My fellow magi do not know the nature of the Prophecy
beyond what is written. I have no reason to doubt this, for I do not
believe they have been inducted into further mysteries than I have. None
stand as Chancellor of the Night, and the Advisor's chair sits empty.
Perhaps as one grows more attuned to the higher workings of the scepter
they may gain further glimpses. This is possible, though I suspect it is
not so simple.
Second, disinterest. The scepter's power is a lure for weak convictions as
well as strong ones. There will be those who acquire such power and then
are satisfied. This, I cannot discount.
Third. Cunning. My fellows hide their true goals from me as I hide mine
from them. This. Very likely, at least in part.
Bozphun is odd. He seems to seek the favour of one who disdains the shadows.
I approach this with caution, for this, I do not understand. Is it honest?
Does he seek to shape the Night in a different image? If this is so, then
he may be my greatest asset or my greatest enemy. Alternatively. Is this a
misdirection? Does he don truth's veil as false guise? I observed him and
his supposed Lord at once, and there seemed legitimacy. Perhaps this Lord
is likewise tricking us all and truly is an agent of the night?
I do not know. I must uncover the answer.
Dondonxa. This one is not odd. This one is unhinged. Tragic, yes, for I
have seen this before when growing. When the young fall from trees when
climbing and land upon their heads, the damage is very similar. This could
be misdirection as well, though I do not think so. I must observe them
further, and play along with these strange delusions to learn more. But I
believe this one might be useful, if only as a source of unpredictability.
A tool against the Adversary cannot be wasted.
moruvale. This one is dangerous, for though I have tried, I have learned
little of them. Their motives are unknown. Their means are unknown. I
either deal with an undrawn picture or one who shrouds himself well. The
answer to which it is must come soon, for if the Adversary will act through
one of the Chasm, I believe it will be this one.
For a time. Many pledged to the Ccul'gra. With the Advisor's departure this
seems to have changed. I must watch closely for those that would still come,
for they will be most open to interrogation while outside the enclave and
eager to please.
So.
Uncover the truth of Bozphun. Learn more of moruvale. Point the mad one at
the Adversary as I can. Study the pledges.
And continue my research.
On this, I shall speak soon.
To divine (1/2).
Added Wed Jul 23 00:48:21 2025 at level 37:
Divination is the foremost mystery that the scepter provides me to which I
have turned my claws and mind. A messy thing, this, with the rending and
the blood and the viscera, but this all washes off my claws easily enough.
Much practice in this there has been. At least a thing needing to be done
while fresh. For even now, the rotten flesh provokes disgust in me. I
wonder why?
It is a strange undertaking. For I believed it would be the process of
reading the omens in the organs, a divining method I have heard of in
passing. This does not seem to be so. Instead, I am given sensations.
Resonance, perhaps. I hear things full of emotion, and get impressions
concerning spans of time and scale.
The texts in the Chasm are opaque on many things. They hide their mysteries
from me still, but an explanation on this at least I believe has been found.
The Ccul'gra communicate through such sensations and impressions, and
though my claws move and rend and tear, I do not believe without the
scepter I would see anything within the remnants therein.
I believe the Ccul'gra are divining them for me, and communicating their results.
This is on one claw good. It means they have some facility to pierce the
Adversary's veil, though this was expected given the prophecy.
On the other it is not good. It is... indirection. A layer between them
and I. Even in this, the truth behind the mystery is kept from me.
This, at least, means it is valuable. This I have learned. The Chasm only
conceals their valuable secrets, the lesser ones left as scraps for those
satisfied by such satiation. Is the rending even necessary? Is this another
misdirection? Other magi use other methods, though the particulars yet
remain one more mystery. Is it all layers upon layers of deception? Or are
the Ccul'gra levering our talents in some way, and some associate with our
crafts in particularly formidable methods?
I worry, sometimes, that I lack the intellect for this. My thoughts go
round and round the problem, but the scale is so great. Will I ever see
more than the edges? How long has this tapestry been woven in the darkness
to thwart even those undoubtedly vastly more brilliant than I? Will I ever
uncover an answer, or simply more questions?
Yet this is the despair of the Adversary. That acceptance of failure before
beginning. Doubt and helplessness are its most wicked tools, and if my mind
is insufficient, I will need to leverage those minds greater than my own.
First, I must learn the nature of the divination that the other magi of the
Chasm utilise. This will potentially give insight, and if not insight yet,
a fuller picture.
This shall also give an opportunity to uncover more about them. My efforts
here have been met with failure, for they are difficult to pin down for
prolonged conversation, and I am told that I am socially stunted. This I
believe is a lie. I simply see more clearly than the rest.
To divine (2/2).
Added Wed Jul 23 00:49:34 2025 at level 37:
Second, I must try to learn more about the Ccul'gra, beyond what is written.
What grants them such facility? How do they do these things? The texts are
informative, yes, but they fail to say as much as they say, and this, of
course, by design. They are our allies, but not our friends.
I must go outside the Chasm. Seek out places where their presence has been
felt, and from this, learn.
The work continues.
The second, at last.
Added Tue Jul 29 14:44:25 2025 at level 39:
I have looked a long time for the next image that I would draw. There have
been sparks. Embers. Potential in many cases. Some of these will grow, I
think. Many will grow cold, and dark, and fade away. Some already have.
I have come to believe it is not only about the person, or the place. It is
about an exact point in time, as well. An instant to capture. I have sat
before Marvolia's indifferent stare and known that one day, perhaps, this
will be such a place.
I have stood within the Shroud of the Unspoken and known that one day, that
grim abyss shall be put to vellum.
I have looked upon some individuals and thought maybe, just maybe, these
will be the ones.
But the time has not been right. There is no process here. No reason. It is
feeling and instinct and the knowledge that when it is time, I will know.
How strange, then, that the first time I think I have found one was found
amongst those of Order.
I so often find these people devoid of something vital. I do not disdain
them, or hate them, or consider them my foes. The Adversary's cruel hand is
found within those of all walks.
But I do pity them. They seem so empty. Actors within a script long written.
They may not be the Adversary's creatures, but fertile soil is doubtless
found.
Yet not all, it would seem.
We spoke of failure. Of striving. Of the knowing that the task is too great,
but even a single step is sufficient. That it is not about final victory,
but about a victory. Of purpose.
Something I have met no other who seems to understand.
I will draw this one.
Truinsun.
But which image will he be?

Added Wed Aug 20 01:01:11 2025 at level 42:
Can ignore this chapter, I'll create a few of these for my own reference as
this stuff continues to (slowly) coalesce. Its mostly for my own reference
to keep track of what card was made when and from who, and their associated
meanings/descriptions so I can recreate in the event of loots or similar.
The Iconoclast: (Mirror Hanged Man)
Upright: rejection, subversion, ruin.
Reversed: powerlessness, an impossible task, sacrifices.
Subject: Vashaxa himself, in his moment of deciding to undertake his path.
(Not choosing the fool even though its traditionally the 'actor' card is
intentional.)
This image depicts a defiant saurian standing beneath an ancient tree.
Wilted leaves tumble around him, the hue of autumn bleak upon their
drifting husks, and he is ringed by a crowd of his species. These are drawn
abstract, their faces and forms blurred and undefined. The subdued image
takes on a far darker undertone by the gaping hole within the primary
saurian's chest, lit from within by an abstract swirl of something akin to
flame, and the sundered hangman's noose which dangles from his upraised
right hand.
The pyre: (mirror Chariot)
Upright: An unfulfilled dream, directed strength, a grand vision, ambition.
Reversed: consumption, fleeting glory, failure, mediocre endings.
Subject: Truinsun telling Vashaxa about his grand vision for the
battleragers, cast in the context of his ignoble end.
This image depicts a funeral pyre, upon which rests a grey-skinned gnome
adorned in a kingly set of armour. Jewels drip from his wrists and a
leering mask of bloody flesh adorns his face. Yet no mourners are drawn to
watch, and no sign of priest or else. Only the climbing flames, and the
flesh consigned to burn.
Eternity: (mirror of Death)
Upright: Antithesis, indomitable will, culmination.
Reversed: acceptance, resignation, mortality.
Subject: Scarabaeus, as seen in his unexpected appearance before the
necromancers in Hamsah Mu'taz.
The majority of this image is strange, drawn in washed out colours and
muted tones. It depicts a crowd of robed figures, faces blurred and without
definition. One and all they have their heads tilted back in either
reverence or grim acceptance, and above them all hover three imposing
shadows, the one feature of the image drawn in stark black slashed with red.
Struggle (mirror Temperance)
Upright: denial of the past/beginnings, hope, envy.
Reversed: despair, denial of the present, sorrow.
Subject: Sophelie, based on her telling Vashaxa about her misspent youth
and how she rejected who she was ('meant to be in Vashaxa's mind').
The woman depicted in this image is dressed in rags and grasps a splintered
length of wood in one hand as a club, but this all seems afterthought.
Instead of a head she possesses two, one sprouting from each shoulder. The
lefts expression is fixed in fervent determination, while the right's mouth
gapes wide in a silent scream.

I have grown to believe that my early impressions were not misplaced.
The prophecy and the divined omens are not a major concern for my fellow
Scions.
This has troubled me for some time. Not because this particularly matters
to me, no. Their own ambitions may yet serve my own even if we are not
aligned in purpose, but because I could not understand why this was
permitted.
The Archmage surely sees it. The Ccul'gra doubtless see it, and could
convey displeasure. The Lords that reign in shadow doubtless see it,
through blind eyes or not. So why?
A question which weighed upon me, for I felt that there was something here.
A seed of insight to be uncovered, if only I could find this answer.
And I believe I have.
The shadow of Vice's Lord has laid long over the Chasm since I joined, but
I have never set my gaze upon him nor heard his words declared until
recently. There was much of what is to be expected. A push for action, for
the consignment of indecision and the wielding of our power, whether for
our cause or his entertainment, who can say. The two need not be mutually
exclusive.
Yet it was not the thirst for violence or the pleasure at the crushing of
the enemies that drew my ear, but a phrase spoken thus:
The shadows deepen despite the thick veil. The omens are promising, the
Ccul'gra will find our plane more tolerable.
So much said in so few words. There are three things to examine:
1. Despite a thick veil.
2. The omens are promising.
3. more tolerable to the Ccul'gra.
The second, at least, I confirmed for myself. Never had I seen such omens
within the viscera, blood set to ebony and burning like the dying sun.
But the veil?
More tolerable?
Why do these matter.
If the prophecy declares our victory, and this is the path ordained: then
will it simply not come to pass?
That could explain why people are permitted to pursue goals so freely
within the fold. Their actions ultimately don't matter. It is an
explanation.
A foolish one. Nonsensical, for the Ccul'gra have forged alliance for a
purpose, and not for charity.
There is a far more likely possibility. One which explains much of what I
have witnessed since I was brought beneath Night's veil and learned the
first mysteries therein.
This is not the fated outcome.
The prophecy is not the ordained path of Creation.
The prophecy is not certain at all. It may be entirely the opposite, a
thing torn from the myriad uncertainties that exist to either side of the
Adversary's chosen road.
And the Scion's?
Our purpose is to not follow the road to that destination. It is not to
follow the prophecy, or to accept inexorability is our ally and our victory
is assured.
No.
There is no road to follow. The Prophecy speaks of a culmination. A point

There is no road to follow. The Prophecy speaks of a culmination. A point
in time. A triumphant moment.
Our purpose is to chart the course to that moment.
This, I believe, explains much.
It is why such divergent scholars are permitted within, for perhaps one
will have an answer not yet considered in the work we undertake.
It is why we are told to challenge applicants so viciously, for the task
before them is one they do not yet comprehend the scale of.
Why we thin the veil? There could be several reasons. Perhaps it is simply
a matter of more power. More likely, I suspect that the world foreseen has
a weaker veil, and so its degradation is of high concern. In this, the
practical meets the theory, and there is little cause to dwell.
What the omens signify. Alignment to this divergent future. I thought that
my study of divination had reached a dead end, but if this is so... I have
whole new avenues of consideration. I shall think more on this soon.
I cannot be certain.
But, I think, I am right.
And if I am, then the Ccul'gra may be a far greater ally than I originally
believed.
Quick updated summary of character view changes etc.
Added Sun Aug 31 13:26:56 2025 at level 47:
- Vashaxa has become convinced that the prophecy of the Night is an
alternative vision for Creation and not the fated path. In his typical 'I
believe it, so it is so' way, he will be going out of his way to slot
things into his worldview. This does mean he'll think Scion needs to be
very proactive and have disdain for members who believe victory is assured
etc now, where he didn't really care previously.
- Has ran into mostly dead ends on further Ccul'gra research. He's gone
over ruins and such but... has visited no libraries, because it hasn't
occurred to him. Over analysis of problems is a theme I'm trying to follow
in general, so he actively misses the obvious solutions a lot of the time.
Essentially fairly smart with very lacking common sense.
- He continues to work on his cards (this is going much slower than I
envisioned, and I expected it'd take a while. Also running into logistical
issues that I didn't really think through with actually translating into
the game, but we'll get there. One day. If he doesn't die first.)
Updated enemy priorities:
Outlander: dislikes them the most now. Originally fairly positively
inclined for enemies because of emphasis on freedom, but after talking with
them believes they're trying to go backwards and undo the work of people
who have changed the world. This is almost certainly a terrible
understanding of Outlander ideology, but that's mostly him in a nutshell.
Battle: really doesn't care that much. Treats them as mostly an
obligation/busy work. Doesn't like getting hit in the face with hammers, so
this is mostly pragmatism.
Fortress: has an appreciation for the zeal displayed by some of them and
the defiance many of them have displayed to the idea of fate. They're
probably his favourites, in a very weird and murderous way.
Tribunal: utterly ambivalent. Thinks they're useful tools, also thinks
they're getting in the way more and more. Something will probably happen
here sooner or later.
Empire: finds the oath an awful concept. Right down in outlander territory,
not a fan.
- Not covered in role chapters yet, but Vampyre is the becoming plan
despite what he says in tells. This could still swing wight, but very
unlikely.
