The Light's triumph.

(Got long. Breakdown at the end.)
The war was lost.
The demonic forces lay broken, cast down by the might and magic of the
elven Lords and their servants. The thirteen champions were even now
fleeing, some perhaps even slain; it was difficult to tell. The Lord
himself was gone, a great roar of rage the last heard of him. That had been
the end of the battle, really. Without their great master, the army had
splintered and broken. The skies which had been black with the morosa
demons clear, the unholy servants of the sky and earth cast back to the
Abyss if they were fortunate. Slain, if they were not.
Trizoth clung to one of those fallen, a warrior-soon-corpse. It hadn't been
meant to go like this! He'd been promised power beyond imagining, a part in
the great abyssal tide to sweep away the light and cast the world into an
age of darkness. They'd had the Lord of Destruction himself! They'd had the
death knights! How had this gone so wrong?
He was just a lesser spirit of the Abyss. A corrupter of minds and rouser
of fear. This was meant to be easy! Great Zurcon had taught his warriors to
call forth spirits like Trizoth to cloak them in an aura of despair, and
he'd jumped at the opportunity. He'd grow powerful! Become something more,
and one day, he'd have even been an archdemon under Zurcon himself!
It was ruined! Ruined!
As the light of an elven blade fell over his current host, Trizoth tore
himself free and fled for the Abyss. He'd not let them kill him here. This
wasn't over. One day, he'd have his vengeance!
Unfortunately for Trizoth, he never made it to the Abyss. The righteous
fury of the elven gods was a thing not to be denied this day, and they had
raised some great warding to prevent the demonic hordes from fleeing in
such a way after they had bound Zurcon. Trizoth was small and weak. Almost
enough that the ward wouldn't stop him...
But not quite.
Trizoth spun away between the planes, cast into a place somewhere between
Thera and the Abyss.
And there the lesser spirit named Trizoth would stay for a very, very long
time.
Snitches get stitches.

Far from the concerns of demons and dark forces, in a somewhat dingy
drinking establishment within the bounds of Loke's farm, a fairly routine
conversation was taking place. Routine for the two participating in it, and
to be honest: not that uncommon among any criminal group really.
"This can't go on, boss." Telik was a young Jaette. Thin of face and thin
of morals too. His declaration was met with silence, but not one that he
hadn't expected. "This shit might fly in Dagdan, but we're in Udgaard now.
He's going to get us all hanging from the gallows."
The boss in this case was a younger man. Mildly pointed ears indicating
some degree of elven heritage, and a face handsome in that particular
manner found on wanted posters and advertisements for the latest
transmutation skin care procedure. He had an untouched mug of some kind of
crime against beer in front of him, and someone who did not know him as
well might believe he was unconcerned.
"You know I'm right. He was in One-Eye's last night bragging about that
snob we robbed on his way through the mountains. If some nosy guard gets
looking, or goes digging for bones...?"
"He was drunk?" the boss asked.
Telik shook his head. "If he was drunk, we could solve it. But he just
can't help himself, and if he can't help himself, then we're all going to
be swinging from the noose sooner or later."
The boss sighed. "You're right, of course. Its a shame though."
Telik grunted. "Aye. Not a bad lad, really. Probably should've cut him
loose in Dagdan, but he's good in a scrap."
"Don't worry about knives. I'll take care of it."
"You sure about that, boss? I can have it done nice and quiet, no need for
it to get messy."
The boss shook his head. "I owe someone a favour. Send him on his way, and
put him out of your mind. It'll all be taken care of."
Telik shrugged. "You're the boss."
I can explain...

Vaskal lay on his back and stared up at the stars.
It had happened again.
He'd thought this time would be different, but his gang had kicked him out.
A liability, they'd said. Can't keep your mouth shut, they'd said. Old
Kreth had said something about snitches while filing one of his knives, but
Vaskal hadn't really needed to hear more. He was an old hand at this by now.
This was the third time, after all. He'd been kicked out of the Rusty
Knives down in Arkham. Been beatten within at least half an inch of his
life when the Sultan's Cleaner's had chased him out of Hamsah Mu'tazz.
Lasted a scant two nights as a member of the Pure Profit's in Voralian, and
now the Dagdan's Finest (newly renamed as the Udgaardian Unmentionables)
had told him to get lost.
Always for the same reason. He couldn't help himself.
When they did a crime, he just had to tell people. He had to tell them all
the details. How else would he become famous, after all? How else would his
infamy grow? When you did something great, you should tell everyone. That
was how you ended up in the stories, after all, and more than anything:
Vaskal wanted to do things worthy of those stories. That was really how you
lived forever, after all. Carve your name so deep into the bones of the
world's collective consciousness that you'll hang over them all like a dark
shadow even in failure.
Though Vaskal just called it wanting to become famous.
It wasn't really safe to sleep in the streets of Udgaard. Loke didn't like
it, and what Loke didn't like the guards didn't like either. Some people
would risk it, but Vaskal wouldn't become famous if a guard dragged him to
the river and dumped him in with a rock around his ankles. He didn't mind
so much though. He liked sleeping out under the open sky. The vastness of
the heavens reminded him of just how small he was.
As he drifted off to sleep, Vaskal made his customary vow as he gazed up at
the vastness which loomed above.
One day, I will dwarf even the stars.
Loose ends.

The followers of the demon-god of annihilation have never truly gone away.
Some great forces of that age yet linger, and the sword of Damacles that is
a box made of ivory remains; but for the most part, they are a minor threat.
Occasionally there will be one who rises above the rest and spreads
carnage in the name of that ancient evil: but all in all?
They're just not what they used to be.
A group of cultists stood in a circle around an altar of unrusted iron in a
long ruined temple. The stench of blood and filth was thick in the air, and
the steady drip of water nearby could be heard.
The cultists were concentrating upon their task though. Upon the altar was
shackled the sacrifice, a young giant most appropriate. A body fit for the
great power they would call back to the world, a form fitting for one of
those great harbingers of the one true Lord's work.
The high priestess lead the chanting, an adamantite disc set with a great
red stone in one hand and an open tome in the other. The sacrifice lay
unmoving upon the altar, chest rising and falling as he stared up at the
ceiling with a somewhat puzzled expression fixed upon his thuggish face.
"Graznarah!" cried the cultists. Thirteen times they repeated the name,
runes traced in blood lighting upon the altar. The air grew charged, the
scent of ozone sharp and bitter. Anticipation grew. Soon.
Soon, Graznarah, loyal lieutenant of Zurcon, death knight of darkest legend
would return to them, and surely, that would change everything!
Soon...
Risks of the job.

Vaskal was sweating, and not because he'd been having a nice lay in the sun
after waking up.
Now. He knew he was not the sharpest axe on the wall. He was okay with that.
You didn't need to be the sharpest axe to be famous, just needed to own it.
But he knew that being chained down to a big block of iron with masked men
and women chanting was never a good sign. It was something like waking up
to being surrounded in a back alley by five members of the Udgaardian watch
all with writs of Loke, but maybe two hands of fingers worse.
Maybe feet two.
So yes. Vaskal was sweating. He wasn't really sure quite how he'd ended up
here. The last thing he remembered was getting back from a small job
stomping on one hearts and kicking deer for moneys. He'd got his pay from
Grilgoul in Udgaard, and had been heading back out to the plains to sleep
again. It had only been two days since he'd been sent packing by his old
crew, but things were looking up.
He vaguely remembered someone saying something. Grzzs, maybe? It was all
such a blur!
Wait. The chanting was getting louder. He tried to lift his arms again, but
whatever magics they'd put on him stopped him. Or were those actual chains.
Huh. This really was not looking good.
That was when something very strange happened.
Out of my way, a glorious return.

Trizoth didn't know how long it had been.
Decades? Centuries? Longer.
He hung in darkness, cast between the planes and with nothing to tether too.
No body, no connection to the abyss. Immaterial and alone.
Time had lost all meaning. He just hung there. Surely, something would
change? Surely, there would be a way back to the Abyss?
Trizoth did not allow himself to despair, for despair was what he brought!
Despair was what he made other people feel!
But there was a terror there. The horrifying knowledge that this may be his
damnation. Trapped. Alone. Forever.
He had tried praying, as well. Praying to the Lord of Annihilation. Praying
in general.
There was never an answer.
Just silence. Stillness.
Until one day, abrupt and without warning, Trizoth heard a sound.
It was the sound of chanting.
He oriented himself. It was not a physical action. Not a manner of turning
head or arms or feet, for he had none.
It was a matter of alignment. Of spiritual triangulation.
The chanting grew louder. Almost frenzied. There was something familiar in
the way it rose and fell, and Trizoth felt a sudden rush of malign glee,
for surely, this could only be the servants of the Lord!
He snatched at the tether they had reached out in search of him, for surely
it could only be for him. Who else would they be seeking for?
And as he shrieked in manic delight, Trizoth was yanked back to Thera.
Utterly ruining the grand design of the Zurcon Priest's to locate one of
their Death Knights in the process.

"FREE!"
The shout thundered inside Vaskal's head, and he almost jumped out of his...
well, he wasn't wearing any boots. They'd taken all his clothes for some
reason. Then he realised he could move again. They'd undone the chains!
He sat up upon the altar, staring around at the gathering.
"Who calls?"
For some reason they almost seemed to swoon, many dropping to their faces
for some reason. What were they doing?
"Wait. What is this?" that voice was shouting again.
Vaskal clenched his fists. This day was really not going well. Only the
worst kind of famous people got kidnapped!
"WHO CALLS!"
Priestess Chief (chiefs always had the best clothes) bowed low before the
half baffled half fuming Vaskal. "I did, mighty Graznarah," she said. "We
have called out, and in your malign wisdom you have answered!"
"I'm stuck!"
Vaskal took a deep breath, eyes narrowing, and the weird priests all shrank
back as if expecting him to pull out an axe and chop them all into tiny
bits and mount them on his wall and show them to his guests. Graznarah? Who
was that supposed to be?
He was about to ask that very thing when that voice piped up again. "Wait!
Oh no. Oh no!"
Vaskal paused. Something was very odd here. "Why?"
The priests did that swooning thing again, but Vaskal ignored them and the
rant the Chief Priest went off on about blood and fire and lots of other
fun things that he didn't really have time for right now.
"Listen, oaf! I'm stuck possessing you because of what these idiots did,
and now they think you're something you're really not."
Vaskal scratched his chin, watching in mild bemusement as the Chief Priest
fanned herself with a hand at the gesture. "Them not go be happy then."
"No! You must say exactly what I say, and pretend until I... we can learn
more of this time and place!"
"Okay. Me fix."
"Wait, what?"
Vaskal got off the altar, stretching to his full height. The priests
swooned again, and Vaskal glared at the chief priestess with his most
menacing of scowls.
"You bring me here?"

She nodded enthusiastically, and Vaskal nodded back.
"That good then."
Then he smashed his fist down on stupid squishy chief priests head, and
bits of brain went everywhere. A blow for the ages! SMASH!
The other priests as one flung themselves on the ground, even as the stupid
voice in his head started wailing and screaming about boring things. Vaskal
was pleased. This made it easier. He jumped up and down, stomping on lying
down priests as they babbled about mercy and service until they were all
smashed, and that was that.
"Okay. It fixed."
"We're going to die! You killed the great Lord's servants. I'M GOING TO DIE!
"
"Talk quiet. You so dumb."
The voice did not talk quiet, but that was okay. Vaskal had found his
clothes and money, and even one of his favourite boots. The other he had to
empty a rat out of, but it was fine otherwise.
"Okay. You get out of head now, I go home. Got to kill more one hearts.
Make more moneys. Become famous!"
And that was when Vaskal found out that things might not be quite as simple
as he'd envisioned...
Summary and breakdown (1/2)
Added Wed Jun 28 14:55:45 2023 at level 27:
Vaskal is a young fire giant dead set on becoming famous like all the
mythical villains he's heard about in the stories. He believes this is the
truest form of immortality and wants to do great things worthy of having
tales told about them.
He has been kicked out of myriad criminal gangs, not for being bad at his
job (he was a pretty good thug and such) but because he insisted on telling
everyone about his exploits and implicating all his fellow criminals,
because if you don't tell people about all the things you've done how can
you become famous? Needless to say, its a miracle he survived this long,
and the boss of his last gang sold him out to a cult of Zurcon followers as
payment for a favour he owed them (undisclosed, not relevant).
Vaskal is captured while trying to make a relatively honest living killing
one hearts and used in a ritual as a sacrificial host in their attempt to
call back one of the Death Knights. However, a very weak and minor spirit
from the abyss got caught up in the ritual instead, so instead of the
eternal undying servant of destruction they just ended up with a slightly
more bipolar fire giant who is a bit unhappy about the whole kidnapping and
whatnot business. Vaskal proceeded to smash all the priests as they begged
for forgiveness, everything he had done unintentionally convincing them he
was in fact Graznarah returned. The spirit now stuck in his head was
absolutely mortified, being a former servant of Zurcon and being convinced
they're going to be hunted down by death knights or similar any day (being
a few centuries out of date).
Essentially, Trizoth is very scheming and devious and all those wonderful
things and wants to regain passed glories and rise as a great servant of
Zurcon. Vaskal is... kind of a moron who likes to smash things and just
really wants to be famous, and has absolutely no interest in serving Zurcon
whatsoever. . Trizoth will constantly be trying to get him to make smarter
choices and tempt him over to team Z. Results may be mixed.
Some notes:
- Vaskal says he wants to be famous. He actually wants to be infamous, but
is too dumb to know the difference.
- In pursuing this goal, he'll try to make himself seem as dangerous as
possible. This might include tall tales, overstating how many souls he has
got, taking credit for things he didn't do, all that kind of nonsense. In
particular and most immediately relevant though this is why he's AP
(they're perceived as big threats). People who assume its because of the
possession if anyone figures that out will be wrong, though Trizoth may
have nudged him that way too. He'll also end up pursuing Scion for exactly
the same reason.
- Sphere: passion. Safe to say he's very much ruled by these, much to his
unwanted guest's eternal dismay.

- Trizoth has no actual control, he'll have to talk Vaskal into anything he

local criminal gangs in.
- Religion could go one of three ways. It'll be Joihe, Zurcon, or unaligned.
I have ideas for all three so will just see how that goes.

Deep beneath the earth and surrounded by unhallowed stone, Vaskal sat in
the Library of Necromancy flipping priceless pages with his thick fingers.
A charitable observer might call the expression fixed upon his face
slightly gormless, and an uncharitable one would be far more honest.
"Facinating! Absolutely facinating!" It was a loud place in Vaskal's head
at the moment, his guest enraptured with the secrets being revealed to him.
"Such power! Such potential!"
"Why all spelled so weird? Is like named after long night at One Eye bar,"
complained Vaskal.
"They are beings from another plane of existence. Of course their names
seem strange to us," snapped Trizoth. "Go back a page. You distracted me!"
Vaskal rolled his eyes and flipped back a page. "I want go get more famous.
People going forget me if sit down here!"
"Nonsense. Such power in these pages! Why, even my Lord Zurcon never called
up such armies. Think of what we could accomplish!"
"Never met follower of stupid Zurcon that not want punch in face," grumbled
Vaskal.
"I am a follower of great Zurcon, you heretical ingrate. Besides, you try
to punch most people in the face."
Absently, Vaskal thumped himself on the side of the head. "Do not. Not
punch gnomes much ever. Them so small, never be famous. Such sad life!"
Trizoth didn't even dignify that with a response, but Vaskal was already
drifting off on a different tangent. "I going pray soon."
"Finally. I knew you'd see sense. You should bring a sacrifice. An elf
would be best, we can-"
"Not to dumb Zurcon god. I going pray to Star Chief! Join greatest gang of
thieves in all world! Be famous among famous!"
"What? NO! Absolutely not! I won't allow it. What would you even do? It
isn't like they need an idiot with an axe. Zurcon will bring you greatness,
your very name shall be famous the moment you take the brand! Free him, and
you will be exalted among all the agents of darkness!"
"Maybe find box one day, that make me famous, "Vaskal agreed. "Put on shelf,
tell all guests. Not everyone have dark god locked in box on shelf!"
"You are a disgrace to your guild! A traitor to the cause!"
"I going show you. Vaskal know what job going do if Star Chief let join
gang! Will be so famous! So famous!"
Trizoth puzzled over that for a while, then shriekd in dismay. "Absolutely
not! You're going to get us killed!"
Vaskal clapped his hands, almost dropping the one of a kind tome in the
process. "SO FAMOUS!"

Vaskal rubbed his temples. His head was killing him; far too many oils of
sight for even a famous giant like himself to handle had elevated his
alcohol blood content to enough to kill ten elves twice over. The Chancelor,
in her wisdom, had decided now was the perfect time to have important
conversations with him, and so as blood dribbled from his nose and he
slurred out his insightful commentary on Scion matters he was quite proud
that he had not yet made a drastic blunder in the conversation. Applicants?
Vaskal knew them all. Trust? Everyone trusted Vaskal, who wouldn't?
Strategies to kill really famous frost giants? In progress, but progressing.
Secrets of magic? They wouldn't be secret soon, because Vaskal would know
them.
"And that why we should get married."
And just like that, Vaskal was sober. Alcohol was flushed from his system
with all the medical mastery of the greatest healers, and a clarity of
thought most profound was blessed to him as if from the Star Chief herself.
Eloquent to the end, Vaskal mustered up the first response that came to
mind. "Uh!"
Trizoth began screaming in his head to accept, that this was a glorious
opportunity to bind himself to power, but Vaskal didn't really pay
attention. Well, the Chancelor was very pretty, and strong, and smashed
faces even better than him!
"Okay, Vaskal agree! Is great idea!"
No doubt in the days to come many would wonder what dark plot or ploy was
being hatched between the giants of the Chasm, and perhaps indeed the
Chancelor has one. In Vaskal's case though, he just really liked the
Chancelor's eyes, and few things made Vaskal quite so hot under the collar
as a giant who could smash faces so well!
And of course, what a famous story it would be!
Some time later and in a very different venue, Vaskal found himself once
more before the bonfire beneath the blazing vista of stars. He stared
mournfully down at the tattered scraps that was all that remained of the
rotten horse ear he'd been so proud of; so much for offerings. Never one to
be despondent for long though, Vaskal rallied himself with the confidence
of the confounded and shouted out his prayers again.
And the Star Chief came.
They sat beneath the stars and talked for a long time. The Star Chief was
so strong! Vaskal couldn't believe someone could just make the rain not
fall. He thought he could try and smash every raindrop for years and they'd
still keep coming.
Developments (2/2)
Added Thu Jul 27 05:15:01 2023 at level 51:
It was strange. Vaskal had always tried to project a sense of unshakable
self confidence in himself, but there had always been those doubts. Those
voices that whispered for all his growing power, it'd never be enough. That
he'd never achieve the fame he so craved, and that there would never be
stories about his prowess. One of those voices was his constant companion
quite often, typically when Vaskal would say something blasphemous about
stupid Zurcon. As the Star Chief talked about doing famous things and being
worthy of stories, of trials and plots, Vaskal began to truly believe. He
could be great. He could be special. He could be famous!
He would pass this trial. He'd come up with a plot. There would be fanfare,
and boldness, and all eyes would be staring at him while the Cadre stole
everything that was nailed down.
"IT IS EVERYTHING THAT ISN'T NAILED DOWN!" raged Trizoth, blessedly ignored
as always.
Was Vaskal loyal? He thought about that for a while. He always tried to be.
Maybe his former associates would disagree, but Vaskal had never meant to
cause problems. They'd just had different expectations and goals! He
remembered how he'd felt betrayed by the herald Fwalboani when he'd turned
on him to help the paladin magistrate. How furious he'd been in the moment.
Yes, Vaskal decided. He did not like traitors. With that complex piece of
self introspection resolved, Vaskal decided that loyalty was a good thing,
and so Vaskal would be loyal to the Star Chief.
Course set, Vaskal departed to plan and plot.

The latest conversation between Vaskal and his eternal guest was in a
slightly different venue. Not Chasm nor Lodge, and not mid marriage
proposal either.
"We should leave here immediately," complained Trizoth as Vaskal dived for
cover for the dozenth time to avoid a hail of arrows, then scurried under a
hissing stream of acid which set the stone of the floor to bubbling
somewhat ominously. "This is so dangerous!"
Dusting himself down and glancing around to make sure noone had seen the
most unfamous panic he had been momentarily portraying, Vaskal thumped
himself on the side of the head. "Stupid Trizoth! This research!"
"How is this research? Go back to the Chasm. I want to read more about
these greater Ccul'gra. This is such a waste of time!"
Vaskal sighed patiently. "We learning all ways that ancient lich king
stopped people finding him secrets, obviously! These vaults such good
distractions. LOOK!"
Vaskal snatched the lid off of a beautiful gold chest and a flurry of
venomous darts took off the tips of his eyebrows as they hissed passed. "So
clever! So smart! Not even treasure in here!"
"Yes, but you do not have an underground labyrinth to utilise," jeered the
unflappably pessimistic demon. "You just had some sacks of rats and the
worst stealth skills ever seen by man. Quite unfamous, even!"
Vaskal sniffed. "Embarrassed thieves give up stealing and become bards to
sing songs of Vaskal's stealth skills!" He tugged off his new favourite
boots and held one up even as an enraged elven warrior rushed at him with a
warcry. "See? Even has best stealth boots!"
Trizoth sighed, a miracle of psychic conveyance given his distinct lack of
lungs. "Pray tell, then, what you have learned from this ill-advised
foray-by Zurcon, he has a helm of brilliance! Kill him! Kill him now!"
"It all about drawing eyes to things," Vaskal explained as he did battle
with the elf in question. "Make big spectacle in one place, then people not
look in right spot. It not even have to be far away sometimes. People just
has to think: AHA, this important!"
"Can you concentrate?" wailed Trizoth as Vaskal almost lost his head to the
blade of his adversary.
"Vaskal learning to multitask," explained the giant patiently as he put his
spear through the slit in the elf's helm with a most satisfying sound.
"Beekeeper say multitasking useful, and that Vaskal should learn do two
things at once!"
"As ever, you should ignore elven advice," snapped the distressed demon.
"One thing and one thing only is your limit."
"So Vaskal been thinking how Vaskal make good distractions!" Vaskal
continued, blissfully unaware or indifferent to the emotional turmoil
transpiring. "Has few ideas!" Trizoth steadfastly refused to take the
conversational bait, but Vaskal soldiered on with all the courage of the
self-assured. "First, must find leverage!"
