Description
Before you stands a male human, a wizard or man of magical talents.
A smooth forehead that escapes his hairline catches your eye as the
light reflects from the pale smooth skin. The eyes, dark black in the
center, white around, sit protected by thick eyelashes. A curved
distinctive nose with pultruding nostrils, poorly groomed. Cheeks,
rigid to the jaw which sits low on his face where they meet a prominent
chin. A parched mouth reveals yellowish but straight teeth. You
further notice his nails are stained black through some use, rather than
cosmetic intent. Further signs of possibly scorch marks can be found
on his hands. For a moment he lifts his arm and his robe drops revealing
a tattoo on his arm. You can just make out the writing, it says "What
is Real?" You further notice his clothing and jewellery and the condition
of his health.

Dedication
I dedicate this book to the objective truth,
whatever that is and to the knowledge one can obtain towards the aspiration
of that goal. By Vazwah Vassi, Lord Scholar of Epistemology.
Chapter 1 - Corpses
I have inspected countless corpses, elves, dwarves, humans and
various animals. When the heart stops pumping blood around, motion in the
head, eyes, mouth all stop. The skull is easy to cut open without damaging
the brain. The brain appears to be fatty tissue with lots of structures and
is divided in to 2 main parts. How does this flesh give rise to thoughts in
the individual I ask myself. Not all creatures seem to have a brain, mist
wraiths in shadow grove for example have no brain and yet they chased me with
more intent than instinct would allow. The blood seems critical to the
functioning of the brain as observed by witness of thoughts, but as with
brains, not all creatures have blood and they show signs of thoughts. I met
an experienced Necromancer that is willing to train me in the animation of
corpses once I have more knowledge which I plan to include in volume II.
Chapter 2 - Consciousness
Consciousness is the subjective first person experience.
I have it and I think others do, many individuals behave as I do.
I performed an experiment on commoners in the City of Vorolia. I
critically wounded them so they could not escape and then I cut part of their
brain with my dagger. I asked the commoner to perform various functions and
answer my questions. After factoring in the influence of their shock and
horror I was able to deduce impaired functioning. The same impairment could
be replicated across individuals. Cutting in a different location
subsequently resulted in a different impairment and that too could be
replicated. Finally I was able to cut what seemed to be a connection between
left and right sides of the brain. Initial experiments proved futile until I
covered up one eye at a time. I noticed something unusual about their
responses. I probed further and came up with the experiment where I showed
them a penned scroll that said "Laugh or die" while blocking one eye.
Then after they laughed, I asked them, why did you laugh and they would make
up some reason such as they found it amusing to think of paladin's wrathing
me or something. But when I covered the other eye on a different commoner,
they would respond that I asked them too. It seems like each side of the
brain has its own consciousness which are normally merged together, but as I
broke the connection, two appearances of consciousness were retained.
But does this fatty material create it in the first place. Perhaps the brain is
a conduit for consciousness. This problem seems hard to solve.More
experiments are required.

Chapter 3 - Free Will
If you ask anyone that can reply in your tongue, they
will claim they have free will. I feel like I have free will. But how can
we be sure, that free will is not an illusion. I have tried the experiment
where I close my eyes and concentrate on the sounds around me, the smells. I
try as hard as I can do stick my awareness exclusively to the non-visual
stimuli around me. I can do this for perhaps 1 or 2 minutes. Until suddenly
I found myself lost in thought.Perhaps thinking about practicing teleport
spell or casting sleep spell on someone that wronged me. It takes some time
before I suddenly realise I was specifically trying to avoid random thoughts.
Each time I tried this, I fail to avoid the distraction of thoughts. The
conclusion I have drawn is that I am not in control of my own thoughts.
They just seem to pop in to my consciousness.
Looking out to the world I notice common trends, more often people tend to
follow the occupation of the father or the religion or ideology of their
family or community. Could it be that every choice is just a natural
response to everything that came before it? Is the world just like a giant
clock ticking away and none of us are actually making choices. My family has
strong ties to the Empire and I also find the Black Sect hall to be a
tempting path. However, is this my own desire or an influence of all my
experiences and the subsequent experiences of my influencers. If free will
is an illusion does this make it more or less likely that consciousness is
created in the brain or is a conduit?
Chapter 4 - The Consciousness Inconsistency.
I have spent a great deal of time experimenting with the commoners from
Vorolia and during this time I had to fight off two paladins that wanted to
protect the commoners. There appears to be an inconsistency between the
commoners and the paladins. For example, in a shop I found two commoners, I
started to attack one, using my mercenary in front while I cast chill touch
spells from behind. The fight took over an hour until finally the commoner
fell lifeless. A lot of noise was made, yet despite that the other commoner
stood there and said nothing, did nothing. He clearly was close enough to
observe. I don't understand how he could not anticipate he would and was
my next victim. By contrast the paladins relentlessly chased me, throwing
down their flamestrikes. There appears to be an inconsistency where the
paladins have far more advanced consciousness than the commoners, despite 1
of the paladins being of the same race, human. The commoners seem to be at
a Tier 1 level while the paladins Tier 2. Similarly I found lots of powerful
creatures or men that appear to have years of life experience, but they sit
at one location for years, not moving. Or they move, but follow the same
patrol for years as well. They also do not try to run away when it is clear

they will lose the fight and die. While I see weaklings roam the Caverns
under the temple of the moon that show Tier 2 consciousness by behaving more
randomly and with more curiosity about the world.
The question of does the brain create consciousness and is free will an illusion
is now 4 questions as it may apply differently to the Tier 1 and Tier 2 consciousness
which I have now defined.
Chapter 5 - Black outs
Sometimes when I go to sleep, the passage of time makes no sense. For
examples, I go to sleep while the moon is new and wake up, the moon is full.
Where is the waxing? Similarly I have missed the waning. A great amount of
time seems to pass during some sleep cycles, but I do not feel different and
I have observed others have lived perhaps weeks of their lives while I was
away. In effort to design an experiment, I learnt the magic of the sleep
spell from the guild master. Thus far it has disappointed, my victim tends
to wake up after 3 or 4 hours. Myself I usually sleep 6 hours consistency
then suddenly after a random sleep, perhaps weeks or months seem to go by.
The blackouts support the alternative possibility that the brain is just a
conduit for some external consciousness. I have begun asking others if they
also experience black outs and so far it seems limited to the Tier 2
consciousness as no Tier 1 has indicated they have this experience. While
Tier 2's seem to be reluctant to talk, as if I am pushing a crazy
conspiracy theory. I discontinued asking this question directly for the time
being.
Chapter 6 - Mushrooms
I came across a Herbalist who told me about some mushrooms that grow nearby
that have interesting properties. I did not consume them with the intention
of discussing it in this book. It was mere curiosity combined with boredom
at the time. However, the results of the experience more than justify a
chapter in this book. About 30 minutes after eating 6 mushrooms I noticed a
distortion of all my senses. Everything around me started to show more color
and objects appeared animated where they were not. Although it was hard to
be sure, there were trees that moved around this area normally.I laid down
and focused on my thoughts. Until I realised there was no I. What I thought
was I seemed to disappear. The experience was unsettling to say the least,
the thing that hurts your ego the most is the sudden realisation you have no
ego. Despite the unsettling nature of the experience I ate four more
mushrooms that I had previously collected. They looked like worms as they
went down. More time passed and I found myself casting detect magic and
thinking there it is, over and over again as if stuck in a high fever. At
one point, I closed my eyes and I saw a bright light, I followed the light
and then saw a human face, face I never seen before, he was a man, perhaps in
his 40's. He was looking at me and moving his fingers as if playing a

musical instrument. I opened my eyes and the grove was back in all its
colorful glory. The strange image of the man was left in my memory only.
Later in the day I felt quite sick and was put off eating the mushrooms
again, but I found the experience further supported one solution to the
problem of consciousness for Tier 2. It may be our brains our conduits and if
so, our will may also be present externally, not created by our brains.
Possibly Tier 1 individuals may not have this conduit, although I doubt they
have free will either and perhaps they are part of the giant clockwork of
Thera.
Chapter 7 - The Multiverse
I have begun learning in the necromancer guild because of my interest in
experimentation with corpses and the mysteries of life and death.
Unfortunately I have missed out the opportunity to learn about the planes of
existence which is taught by another guild. So I am no expert on this
topic. From what I have gathered we live in the prime plane. Other planes
exists, elemental planes close to our plane and light and dark planes further
away. The gods presumably inhabit other planes as well. So far I not have
learnt anything to help my studies specifically. Life from all these planes
are widely known to visit the prime plane. There does not seem to be any
indication that the source of our consciousness or our will comes from these
planes.Generally there is more intelligence in the prime plane when
thinking of elementals or demons. Even the gods themselves have been
described to be similar to us, but with much greater powers. Perhaps there
is another plane sits further out and could be in control of all the inner
planes, if so does that mean there are gods that control gods?
Chapter 8 - Imperial Imperative
The Tier 2 lifeforms have the chance to break free and work out the truth of
our reality, unless I am wrong, I may be. But currently we fight amongst
ourselves, are selfish and some with chaotic pursuits. It seems rational to
allow the Empire to control Thera and bring order. Only though an ordered
civilization can we study what is real, to determine if we live in the base
reality or if we do not and if not, what is it. I shall help the Empire, as
a scholar leader in this field, I will demonstrably benefit from the
increased resources, freedom and peace to acquire new knowledge. Though I
must caveat my choice to join the empire, could also be controlled by a will
not of my own or possibly will itself is simply illusionary and I am lead to
this path by past experiences I and my family have had with the empire thus
far. I don't know if I am a victim or a leader.
