Description
An overpowering miasma of stale alcohol and sour body odor hangs around this
man, so thick you can almost taste it. Looking upon him, you're unsurprised
why. A matted mess of thick, silver dreads have been unceremoniously wrestled
back into a single, shoulder length ponytail. His skin appears to be quite
pale in appearance though it is hard to tell through the caked on filth and
grime. His armour and clothing are in an equal state of disrepute.
Dark, glazed over eyes peer out at the world, seemingly struggling to focus
on any particular point. His face, though filthy, has no facial hair,
revealing a long hideous scar down the left hand side of his face. It extends
from the edge of his mouth up and over to his ear where the top half is
missing, leaving him with a permanent lopsided grin. The remaining ear is
pointed, hinting towards some kind of Elven ancestry.
Role
Destroyed homes
Added Fri Dec 11 19:09:34 2020 at level 4:
Authors note: I am bullet-pointing my role for ease and speed to read. It
does not reflect in any way a lack of thought or commitment to the role.
Home
- Veldren has few memories of his childhood, not that he particularly
wants to remember many of them
- He recalls living with his brother, whom he called Vizz
- Their parents were preoccupied with books and magical objects
and were seemly annoyed by their childrens presence
- There was an explosion, a magical one (that second part is clear)
which destroyed his home
- As a result he was sent to the Ardenwood orphanage
- He does not know what happened to Vizz or his parents
Ardenwood
- Memories at Ardenwood are even more fuzzy
- It was an old place, with expensive things that he could not touch
- This displeased Veldren and fed his rebellious nature
- He remembers it snowed one night, only the snow was glowing. He
remembers reaching out to touch it
- He would often dream about playing wild and ridiculous games
with his brother Vizz in the woods outside their childhood home,
though he cannot be sure how much was dreamt or was real
- Then the fire came and destroyed everything. He cannot recollect
any details about its source or what happened to the others at the
orphanage
- Though what he cannot forget though is that both his childhood
homes were destroyed
Forgotten past and no future
Added Fri Dec 11 19:15:27 2020 at level 4:
Mercenary work
- Life after Ardenwood was rough, Veldren spent several years
living on the streets of Seantryn, doing whatever jobs he could
(lawful or not) to get by
- It was during this time the he began to drink too, as it was
an easy escape to the misery that his life had become
- It was the drinking that lead him to his first real job, as he
befriended a small group of grizzled mercencies frequenting
the same drinking hole
- It is working with these men that he learned his rough and
crude way of speaking
- Their role was to escort valuable cargo. None were great fighters
but they looked menacing enough to deter most thieves
- On his last job, they were transporting a rare and powerful magical
artifact. It had a repulsive smell which strangely reminded Veldren
of his parents
- As they passed through the darkened woods North of Seantryn,
they were ambushed. By whom Veldren does not know
- All were slain except Veldren, who was knocked unconscious by a
vicious strike to his head
- He survived but the attack scarred him permanently
Scars
- This attack had several significant impacts on Veldren
- It scarred him physically, leaving an ugly gash down the side
of his face (ugly flaw)
- For the third time in his short life, Veldren's life had been violently
disrupted. Causing him to believe no matter what he does, things will
end badly
- This new belief causes dramatic shift in behaviour, as he begins to
live in the moment with little regard for the future
- This mindset results in him drinking almost constantly (alcoholic flaw)
- As he doesnt believe in a future, he has little desire to build
relationships. Instead he gets a real kick out of messing with other
people for his own pleasure
- Veldren decides to enroll with the Warriors Guild, determined that if his
life is going to end badly, he will go down fighting
- Ironically, it is exactly this carefree attitude that causes him to excel: his
fearless, drunken fighting style reveals a natural born warrior
- This natural prowess sparks a small flame of pride, driving Veldren
to train harder and grow stronger
Vizz, Umbrand and Dollerheim
Added Wed Dec 16 01:12:58 2020 at level 16:
Vizz:
- Vizgrathol reached out to Veldren, claiming to be his brother
- Upon meeting and swapping stories, Veldren recognises him
- To Veldren Vizz carries a disgusting smell and it irritates him
when he casts in front of him, though he tolerates both far
more than he does with other mages
- They spoke of their parents, Vizz seems to think theyre alive
and is investigating what happened at Ardenwood. Veldren
couldnt care about either, though told Vizz to inform him if
he did find their parents
- Seeing Vizz brought up unexpected emotions in Veldren,
ones he has not felt in a long time:
---- Although he doesnt fully recognise it a deep subconscious
part of him does care for his brother
---- He also feels slightly betrayed by his older brother, believing
he should have been there to look out for him after the fire
- He will not mess with Vizz like he does others and it is (currently)
the one relationship he will nurture
Umbrand:
- Umbrand reached out to Veldren, claiming to remember him
from Ardenwood
- Although sceptical at first, Veldren now believes Umbrand is
telling the truth
- Umbrand called Veldren 'Little Bug', Veldren does not
like that name
- Upon hearing Umbrand is claiming to protect and look after
all from Ardenwood, Veldren began picking on him about the
four who he failed to protect. This brings Veldren a great deal
of pleasure
- Veldren plans on stringing Umbrand along, letting him believe
he can 'save' Veldren but will simply be messing with him
Dollerheim:
- Veldren ran into Dollerheim at an inn in Seantryn
- They began talking and realised they both knew Umbrand and
came from Ardenwood
- Veldren picked on him for his weight, candy, lisp and calling
Umbrand "Dad", and looks forward to messing with him more
Other:
- Veldren has little interest (currently) in seeking out other children
from Ardenwood or its history (though will be responsive if they
reach out to him). To Veldren, he is happy living in the moment
and not dwelling on the past
- The smell of magic has been getting stronger and is really starting
to piss Veldren off. He recently tried to bash a mage into a wall who
cast near him
Vizz, the past and present
Added Sat Jan 2 17:12:11 2021 at level 40:
Did I get that right?
[Yes No]
ve not managed to speak too often, when they
do it is always significant
- Veldren's bond with Vizz continues to grow and he feels a certain level of
protection towards his brother. As such, Veldren will not hunt Vizz, he will
warn Vizz of incoming danger (particularly from the Village) and will even
physically act to defend his brother from non-Villagers
- Vizz continues to pry about the past, his endless questions, along with the
resurgence from many others from Veldren's past have kindled his interest
The past:
- Veldren has reunited with many children from his childhood. At
first he put it down to people living in the past, unable to move on, but
there does seem to be something about Ardenwood Manor that is more
significant than he originally realised
- The recent strange "snowfalls" have triggered memories of a similar time
at Ardenwood
- Then most recently, the sky opening up and Grombie's vanishing
unsettled Veldren to the core, as did Dollerveims words afterwards
(paraphrased): "they conducted rituals on us that made our dreams
come true, Grombie was Feldscren's imaginary friend."
- Thinking back to his dreams of wild and imaginative games he used
to play with Vizz, a tight knot of concern firmly roots itself deep
within Veldren
Magic and warfare:
- As Veldren has grown, so too has his confidence. He has become
a powerful warrior and Village Scout. His yearning to become something
is becoming a reality.
- As a result, Veldren will often challenge others or bait them into combat
to prove himself superior
- Regarding the Village itself, he finds it quite a strange place. So many
rules and codes, all he wants to do hunt mages and remove their stink.
- Veldren pays little attention to the tablet or commandments, figuring
theyre meant to be bent and broken as needed
- The Commanders new challenge is laughable too, Veldren plans to
cheat the entire thing
- There is one in the Village who interests Veldren but he has yet to
meet her: the Goddess Nalasul. It might be the one shrine he
actually does seek out as part of the Commander's silly quest
Growing anger
Added Fri Feb 5 17:10:50 2021 at level 51:
Veldren
- As Veldren ages, he has grown more bitter and angry. His foes
constantly outnumber him, use cheap tactics and the few he can place
some trust in (Umbrand, Dollerveim, etc.) he believes have betrayed him.
- The drink only fuels this rage and with it comes further memories from the
past. The overwhelming theme is loneliness and abandonment. In fact, the
only time he can recall not feeling truly alone, was with his brother playing
in the woods.
Vizz
- As Veldren's anger at the world around him grows, he tries to find a
direction to focus it. Thinking back, he cannot recall his parents well, nor
can he recall any adults at the manor.
- He remembers the other children, if only vaguely, but they too were as
lost as he was.
- The only true person he could depend upon, turn to for guidance, support
and protection was his big brother Vizz.
- But where was Vizz when Veldren needed him most? Where was he
during the explosion, the fire or any other time during and beyond Ardenwood?
- Why did he suddenly appear, reeking of magic, having pursued the same path
as their hated parents.
- Veldren's anger boils at the thought, finding its focus.
- Still, Veldren is torn - Vizz speaks fondly of times past and both
his words and actions have shown genuine care (helping Veldren retrieve from
the Empire, striking at mutual foes). It pulls at emotions Veldren once
thought long gone, creating a torrent of conflicting thoughts further fuelled
by the drink.
Dreams
- Veldren has spoken to many about rituals conducted at the Manor,
rituals which brought dreams to life. Some say they're not dreams at all, but
walking nightmares which must be destroyed.
- Veldren would not have believed any of it if not for the strange appearance
of beings in the sky.
- Deep down, a part of Veldren suspects his brother may be his own dream
come true. It explains his absence, his claimed "sleep" whilst he recovered
from the explosion.
- Though whenever the thought arises, he buries quickly in a sea of
alcohol, as the idea of Vizz (the only one who ever truly cared for him) not
being real, potentially being taken or what Veldren may himself someday
need to do to his brother, is too painful to consider.
Nalasul and Vizz
Added Sun Feb 21 22:28:49 2021 at level 51:
- Veldren visited Nalasul and spoke at length with her and an old woman, at least
he thinks he did, he is not certain anything is what it appears to be in that Shrine.
- The visit was surprisingly eye opening for Veldren, he had always been a trickster,
prankster and was generally an ass to get a rise out of people, but he lacked
subtlety. His deceptions were might initially fool the naive but they quickly
caught on and could not be tricked again.
- Nalasul did challenge him bring about his own deception, one that is complete,
grand and most importantly, entertaining.
- Though it may not be so entertaining, there is one deception that Veldren has
tried to maintain throughout his life: despite outward appearances, Veldren and
his brother Vizz are not enemies. Quite the opposite. Vizz has aided Veldren, and
vice versa.
- In fact, there is very little Veldren would not do to aid his brother
- So Veldren spoke with Nalasul this deception. Veldren will not harm his brother,
in fact, Veldren will actively seek to protect him from the Village. In turn, Nalasul will
force the rest of the Village to pick up the slack and hunt Vizz
- To do this though, none in the Village can know. Veldren must create the guise of
hating and hunting his brother.
-Veldren will also seek out to become Drillmaster, though he cares little for the
responsibility and seeks only the glory.
- In fact, Veldren would be a terrible Drillmaster: he is a disorganised, drunkard
that lives in the moment, cares little for the long term outcome of the war
or others besides himself and his brother. He does not gather enemies items of
power, cannot recall anything on the tablet and rarely thickens the Veil; he
simply dislikes magics and being around it pisses him off.
- Veldren will also avoid the other Village Gods, for he now knows they cannot be
tricked and will almost certainly be unhappy with his actions.
Gods and Dreams
Added Mon Mar 1 19:59:28 2021 at level 51:
Morius and Nalasul:
- War has taken its toll on Veldren and he can feel his miserable life nearing its
end. Despite knowing it would come and embracing an attitude for living
in the moment, as it nears he finds himself resisting it.
- As such he finds himself considering ways of extending it, one such way
was through Tristhana, who invited him to her Church of Morius.
- Knowing of Morius' reputation for making deals, Veldren accepts and
speaks with the Lord.
- Morius offers life, if Veldren was to sever his ties with Nalasul, and
to say "Goodbye to her shell of a faith."
- Upon hearing this, Veldren erupted in laughter, as he knew some of
Nalasul's ways. Veldren, extremely intoxicated, accepted the deal.
- Veldren plans to share this tale with Nalasul, he will say the words
asked of him and in his ignorance, he believes he can deceive the Church
Tristhana and Vizz
- Veldren has begrudgingly begun to form a connection with Tristhana,
to the point he will no longer actively hunt her or strike her on sight
- Though her magic still pisses him off and should she cast in front of
him he will likely lash out.
- As both she and Vizz belong to the Chasm, he will not take their item
unless ordered to.
- Finally, in an effort to protect Vizz and in a strange way of almost
attempting to deceive himself, Veldren has begun twisting his story
of his time at Ardenwood.
- Though he will not say it outright, he has begun spinning half truths
about what he dreamt of during his time there. No longer does he
claim to have dreamt of his brother, instead he claims to have dreamt
of the fire that destroyed it.
