Description
A tortured light betrays the manic confessions of this drowish figure as
the amalgamated sins of his past taint his ebon flesh with a mystical
script. The language that tarnishes his skin appears foreign and ravenous
as it withers under the gaze of any whom would attempt to decipher the
realm of madness that has overcome him. Tendrils of mana radiate from the
core of his being, perverted with an animalistic essence as it causes his
ragged and stained robes to flutter slightly and bathe his surroundings
in the reeking scent of ash and sulphur. Something moves beyond him as a
cloud of ash and sand endlessly falls from beneath the hem of his
dishevelled robes. The apparition is more than the radiating essence of
despoiled life that leaks from his flawed visage, but an eerie marionette
of his shadow itself. Hunched and contorted, his movements appear both
enhanced and crippled simultaneously as his unnatural height lends to the
broad shadow that mocks his movements with an unparalleled grace, defying
the very nature of its own intellect.
Role
An Intimate Betrayal
Added Sat Nov 7 19:32:00 2020 at level 51:
Mother and son walk hand-in-hand through the grand city of Galadon. The
woman is clearly human and her son appears to be half-drow, on account of
his dark complexion and features.
The woman appears quite distressed and frantic, peering about herself
anxiously as she winds through the city's park and heads south, taking
pause at the Large Intersection.
The boy peers up at her worriedly, obviously feeding off of her anxious
energy and looking for assurance.
Crouching down, the woman leans toward the child and pleads with him:
"Sweetheart, your mother has lost something very dear to her and you're
the only one small enough to retrieve it. Be a dear and go grab it for
mommy, won't you?"
The tears in her eyes had properly conveyed this item's importance and
the boy reluctantly agrees, nodding and peering worriedly into the dark
sewers below.
"I'll lower you down, ok? It's just right down there, you can't miss it."
As the boy is lowered into the darkness, his soft snivels are heard in
the immediate vicinity.
"Mommy? Where? Mommy? Mommy!?"
The woman takes one last glance down the sewer grate and appears to lean
in to respond to his screams for help, but thinks better of it and
restrains herself.
Backing away from the sewer grate, she hesitates briefly once more, the
boy's screams becoming more and more panic-stricken.
The cityguards, having been alerted by the child's screams begin urgently
scanning the area. The labryinth of tunnels that is the Galadon sewer
system did well to confuse them, as the sound of the child's screams
surfaced in multiple areas of the city.
Noticing the distraught mother, one of the cityguards approaches her to
assist.
"Miss, where was your son last seen!? Miss!"
With tear-stained eyes, she promptly responds with a pained shriek,
"You'll never understand!" before pushing her way through the concerned
crowd and disappearing beyond the outskirts.
Somewhere deep in the sewers, a child becomes lost in the cisterns of
filth, tears in his eyes as the realization sinks in: He is lost. He is
betrayed. He is alone... And only the darkness will make him whole.
Confessions: Sewer Rat
Added Sat Nov 7 19:36:50 2020 at level 51:
Now that I've risen to power and established myself, it's time to confess
myself to you, Lady Nalasul.
Before I had presented myself to Thera as a curious scholar, I was but a
boy struggling for survival in the sewers of Galadon. It was there that I
would learn the most valuable of lessons: deception, cunning, betrayal
and most of all, concealment.
Abandoned by my wretched whore of a mother in the sewers, left to die...
So falsely blinded by the "light" she so claimed to adore. There are no
'good' people in this world-- only those that buy into their own
delusions.
At the time, I had been forced to come to terms that this place would
either be my feces-filled tomb or my new home. Little did I know that it
would merely become an unlikely training ground for what was to come.
Between the crude, unfiltered chatter of the local sewer folk and the
countless conversations I had eavesdropped on in the city above, I had
learned a great deal. Beginning with nothing, forced to survive on
nothing but will and wiles... Hiding what little posessions I had from
the scavengers and thugs that run rampant in the sewers... I've gained
much more from that experience than if I had walked calmly and fell into
place amongst the useless herd above, that's for certain.
Listening to the arrogant Galadon elite, I learned the value of
knowledge, and in the same vein, the value of silence. Just because you
have the cards to play, does not mean they should be laid out on the
table for all to see in a display of ego, but instead played when it is
most effective. Ego has shown to be a critical weakness that is easily
exploited, nothing more. Yet, most Therans of any repute are blinded by
ego and leave themselves susceptible to manipulation. Growing up as a
shit-covered child wrestling giant rats for scraps, I'm more or less
immune on that front.
You may be wondering how a filthy sewer child grew to be so well-written.
Well, starting at a young age I would sit in on lectures of the various
guilds. By sat "in", I mean sat "under", really. You'd be surprised how
intricate the Galadon sewer system is and how easily sound travels
through even the tiniest of sewer grates. I'd come to find myself most
intrigued by the art of transformation... Shapeshifting. Something to
make my frail, half-drow form sturdy and survivable for what is to come.
Soon, this unassuming 'scholar' will share a valuable lesson and shape
Thera much in the same way I was: with darkness.
Confessions: Navigating the Madness
Added Sun Nov 8 19:42:44 2020 at level 51:
During my stay in the sewers, I met a deranged, yet ingenious conjurer
that dwelled within a makeshift laboratory who would prove to be an
invaluable source of information. His mind has clearly cracked from
reasons I can only guess at-- perhaps straddling the line between genius
and insanity a bit too liberally.
He shares his wisdom with any that will listen, but most write him off as
mad... And he is. However, the knowledge to be gleaned from his ranting
is invaluable beyond measure to those that truly listen.
Fractured bits of insight can be extracted from his borderline psychotic
babbling. Like fragments, his words must be pieced together-- like a
crude puzzle or an off-color riddle.
He'd become the the key to both my past and future, yet I would not
discover this truth until years after I'd rise to the surface and scour
the library of the Celestial Lyceum. It is there, that the dots would
begin to connect.
"Tain'guul"
... The sir name of a drow known for his obsession with the Shadow Plane.
Apparently he had gone as far as to abduct and ritualistically impregnate
several Priestesses of Einoh as a tribute to the Spider Goddess in a bid
for power to survive the harsh environment of the Shadow Plane. None know
if he was successful or if he had parished in his pursuit, so he remains
an obscure mark in the research books on the subject.
When the deranged conjurer made mention of "Tain'guul", it immediately
struck a cord with me. I had heard the name before, long ago when I was a
boy, before I had been abandoned. My wench of a mother would curse his
name and speak of his vileness.
Her own selfish motive, to abandon the product of such darkness instead
of face it... She'll die by my hand if I ever cross her path.
Vizzar Tain'guul : Summary/Breakdown
Added Sun Nov 15 18:25:24 2020 at level 51:
- Abandoned by his mother (a priestess of Einoh) in the sewers of Galadon
at a young age after seeing the impending darkness of his father within
him.
- Wants to find and kill his mother. Presently he only knows that she is
a Priestess of Einoh-- one of many that was impregnated by his dark-elven
father in a dark ritual/bid for power to the Spider Goddess.
- Has become obsessed with uncovering secrets of the Shadow Plane and
ancient magics, mostly inspired by his curiosity about his father and
what he may learn from him. He believes he is still alive somewhere, or
perhaps even stuck in the Shadow Plane, but has no definitive evidence of
either.
- Currently poses as an aimless scholar, but will take on his father's
last name of "Tain'guul" once he has secured his spot in the Scions of
Eternal Night-- both for clout and to see what kind of information comes
out of the woodwork with this revelation.
- Has a particular hatred for those of the light (especially followers of
Einoh) due to his abandonment by his mother. Their hypocrisy and
righteous delusions infuriate him.
- Seeks the Scions of the Eternal Night to sate his curiosity about the
Shadow Plane as well as bring destruction of the Theran populace that he
has learned to despise.
- Fell in love with shapeshifting as a boy in the sewers-- something to
give his frail form some survivability. Focused on defensive shapes so
that he may survive the Eternal Night and the Ccul'gra assault that
follows it.
Confessions: Tain'guul, Ccul'gra, and Nal'asul
Added Sun Nov 29 18:18:37 2020 at level 51:
I've been inducted into the Scions of Eternal Night and have gained
access to the library and knowledge guarded within the chasm as well as
all the power that comes with it. My strength has increased
exponentially.
With my obvious link to the Ebony Scepter allowing me to summon the
Ccul'gra to this plane, there's no longer a need to pose as a scholar or
hide my surname any longer... It's only a matter of time before it gets
around and it is my hope that it draws in the ghosts of my past so that I
may finally confront them.
The Ccul'gra are simple beasts... Having spent as much time as I have as
an animal myself, I feel like I've gained an understanding of them better
than most. The few varietals that I've seen act very much different, but
share a commonality in that they respect only one thing: strength. They
can tell I do not fear them and instead feed off the anger that I exude
toward the general populace.
With this newfound power and the Scion's texts at my disposal, I find
myself another step closer to delving into the Shadow Plane. With that in
mind, I secured a meeting with Lady Nalasul that ended with only a bit of
my blood being spilt and a bargain being struck: She will secure
information about my father in exchange for secrets that I uncover within
the depths of the Shadow Plane.
I'm doubtful that I will uncover everything there is to be discovered
during my first venture there, but if my father is still alive, perhaps
he'll have further insight for me... Or perhaps he'll just be another
worthless heap that I'll gladly destroy.
The potential for uncovering ancient secrets and taking steps toward the
Eternal Night begins to look more and more within reach... For now we
bide our time, my friend, and soon we shall no longer fester in the filth
but perch upon a throne of darkness, looking down over this pitiful
realm. Darkness shall come, and with it, our era of dominion.
Woe to those that have denied us.
Confessions: Deranged
Added Thu Dec 10 23:00:01 2020 at level 51:
Lady Nalasul was kind enough to alert me of another unknown party digging
for information about the Tain'guul name, suggesting that I leave myself
disconnected from it for now, lest it bring danger to my doorstep. I'll
heed Her words of caution while I get to the bottom of it.
Finding out who pries into my lineage has become a rather pressing
matter. Naturally, I immediately began my investigation with the wisest
mortal I know:
Filled with anxiety, I lurked back to my old stomping grounds... The news
of others peering into my past made me feel exposed, like malicious eyes
upon virgin flesh. I retreated to the sanctity of the life I thrived in
for many years before emerging into the world beyond to visit the one
known to the Theran populace as "The Deranged Conjurer".
It had been a long time... The nightwalker at my side brought an eerie
smile to his face.
Of course, after seeing the Ccul'gra in the flesh, he immediately turned
to his own shadow as it danced in the candelight, babbling on and on
about nothing more than the shadows themselves. He would continue on like
that for the remainder of our visit, making it clear that he would not be
of much use in uncovering the source of my plight.
However, it did present me with a rather interesting idea:
What if I were to lead others to believe *I* myself was mad? Just as
others write the conjurer's words off as the rantings of a lunatic,
perhaps it would give me the same leeway, allowing me to engage with
friend and foe alike whilst simultaneously disarming them and masking my
intent.
Another obsessed magus lost to madness. What a shame.
The relief of dawning this new mask... I can feel my anxieties melting
away already.
Confessions: Tain'guul, The Inevitable Choice
Added Wed Dec 30 13:54:00 2020 at level 51:
Well, well... I suppose it was only a matter of time before the word got
out about my lineage:
Lady Nalasul believes it one of the scions prying, which I don't doubt. I
attempted to sniff out who, but I have to assume that others of the fold
are not the most forthcoming if they've made it this far. The mummy that
I had pinned for it on speculation alone surprised me a bit:
Itzenxilaatl turned out to be the most forthcoming of all, divulging me
with his knowledge of the Shadow Plane... which wasn't much, mind you.
Poor old mummy, so starved for the approval of others to offset the
reaction to all of his dastardly misdeeds. Pitiful.
Kithervoy... Not an ounce of motivation beyond blood in this one. Not
much else to note.
And at last, Narra... "The Old Guard"... She took a step back, vacating
her position. Seems she did both of us a favor-- it should be someone
smart, cunning, and willing to seek out the Night at any cost instead of
one wallowing in a stagnant pool of unearned stuffiness.
After my review, it has become evident that even the undead who has spent
countless years a member trails me in knowledge. Me, a mere fledgling.
Just goes to show what a sorry state the Chasm has been left under such a
lazy thumb.
It's time for a new hand on the reigns. One that can hold their own
against the hordes that seek to stop us. One that will make strides to
advance the prophecy.
I only hope that Lord Morius is wise enough to realize the easy choice in
front of him, dripping with knowledge and secrets, enshrouded in an
elaborate mask of his making.
Confessions: A Shadow of Doubt
Added Sun Jan 24 16:33:58 2021 at level 51:
My dreams have been particularly dark as of late... as if a presence
mingled with the very essence of my soul. Sometimes I slumbered, while
other times I stood treacherously above myself with malice upon my
tongue. What did it mean? I do not know.
Bending, contorting, peeling away from me like the frayed strings of a
marionette, severing at long last... I watched as my shadow defied my own
movements for the first time.
My delving into the darkest planes under the guise of scholarly pursuit,
yet all the while the true danger lurked beneath the sinister well of the
Shadow Plane, provoked by the promises of power and intrigue to which I
had succumbed... Was it my father's scheme all along? Perhaps it was.
Foolish now to contemplate the error of my ways, for it is simply too
late to deny the host I have become for the creature that lurks in my
steps. While it may appear to be a simple shadow, I despair to proclaim
that the complexity of the situation is vaster than the most colorful
imagination.
In a moment of clarity, I write this against the dualistic perversions of
my mind... for how long I will remain in control of my defiled earthly
vessel remains to be seen, but with all certainty I feel the battle for
dominion of my soul has begun in the darkest pits and parallel planes of
this tormenting existence.
