Description
The man before you is clothed in hides and skins dyed and stained in
dark black hues of earthen tones veined here and there in a multitude
of rich shades of greens and browns. His burly frame is apparent in
the tight fit of his thick oiled leather hauberk and the manner in
which his vambraces and breeches stretch against the corded sinews of
his hardened arms and legs. Crossed straps hung with innumerable small
sporrans and pouches run across his chest and back beneath the cloak
that drapes from his shoulders down to just where his boots meet the
ground. His shoulder length hair is pulled back from his thick brow
in a myriad of intricate tight braids interwoven with runes hewn
from precious stones in shades of dull violet and muted crimson.
The man's face is not unkind yet neither is it gentle, rather it
conveys a stolid sense of resolute determination.

Chapter 1

He passed through a doorway at the end of the court and walked down a hall that
ran to the north wall and the gate that opened there. There were four gates to
Udgaard, one for each approach. There were a number of smaller doors as well,
but these were constructed of stone and sealed with iron. Most were cleverly
hidden. You could find them if you looked hard enough, but to do that you had
to stand right up against the wall where the light was good and the guards on
the battlements would see you.
Nevertheless, he always kept a man at each during the hours between sunset and
sunrise, taking nothing for granted. He passed to on his way to the west gate,
fifty yards apart along the winding corridor. The guard at each acknowledged
him with a sharp salute. Alert and ready, they were saying, he gave each a nod
of approval both times and passed on. He frowned though, when out of sight,
troubled by their deployment. The one at the first door, a goblin from the
north, was a veteran, but the one at the second, a young kobold, was new. He
did not like stationing new guards by themselves. He made a mental note to
correct that before the next watch. He was concentrating on the matter as he
passed a back stairway leading down from the barrack's sleeping quarters and
so missed the furtive movement of the three men hiding there.
The three pressed themselves tightly against the stone wall as the Captain of
the guard passed unseeing below them. They remained very stil until he was
gone, then detached themselves once more and continued down. They were Druids,
all of them, each with more than ten years of service to the Tree, each with a
zealot's burning conviction that he was destined for greatness. On the back of
the third of them, bundled tightly against the night's chill in a pack of
thatched marshweeds rode a sleeping male child. The three climbed back up,
unseen and leaving no trace of their passing, to the parapet of the western
tower. Each nodded silently to the others in turn, and with a nod all took the
shape of large condors. A flap of their wings turned the still night air into a
swirling breeze and they flew away beneath the light of the hot moon into the
cloudless night sky of the summer solstice.
Chapter 2

Voronwe was always most restless in the height of summer, the harmonies of the
cicadas and crickets echoing over the marsh through the still hot night air
should have been enough to lull him to sleep, but he was discontented and could
find not find the peace of mind to drift into the oblivion of slumber. The
saurians' village had always been home and they had treated him as one of their
own but this was his sixteenth summer and it was time for him to take out on
his own to find the answers to the questions that had gnawed at his mind ever
since he had been able to form a conscious thought. Nothing ever seemed right.
The mud between his toes and the sounds of a croaking frog or snake slipping
slowly across a log felt good and real but foreign and somehow peculiar.
His saurian Elders could sense his heavy discontent and admonished him to seek
his peace among his people in the shining city of Voralia. They sent him on
his way with a shoddy haversack, a wooden practice sword and their blessings.
He took with him all he had learned from them of the ways of the wilds swamps
in which he had been raised.
A chariot pulled by winged stallions danced in the sky above, barely clearing
some of the higher rooftops as it descended in a twisting spiral from the west.
It made a final wide loop around the high tower at the north end of the river
city and came careening to an abrupt halt on the widest of dirt paths that
wound through the central gardens. Voronwe barely lifted his head to notice.
He was deep in meditation, putting a great deal of effort into attempting to
grasp back at the forces that pulled against his senses like a distant memory
that refuses to come to mind yet refuses to be forgotten. He enjoyed the
flowing rivers that surrounded all of Voralia but whenever he came inside the
city proper he found himself eventually in the gardens in meditation. Summer
was at its height though and he had been charged with finding one of the
Fortress of Light by his saurian surrogates. So he picked up his sack and
headed northwest to the mountain ranges where he was told the Fortress lay.
Chapter 3
Added Fri Jul 1 15:07:43 2022 at level 46:
Twenty years on Voronwe was stronger, smarter and wiser. He had found a true
family after making his pledge to the Fortress of Light, and true inspiration
in the guidance of his ghostly Goddess Jaguar. He had not allowed his thoughts
to tarry overly much on his origins and while he felt a real sense of belonging
among his brothers and sisters of the Fotress he still wished deeply for some
clear resolution of the hazy memories of his early years. As he reached middle
age, Voronwe was able to distinctly see the the benefits of all the methods and
teaching his saurian surrogates had instilled in him. Though he would never be
as wise as those who had adopted him, he was able to appreciate their wisdom in
bringing him up hard and rooted in their ways. The foundations they had built
in him to rely upon the light and to take courage into every battle had been
the bedrock for his survival through the trials and many failures he had
experienced thus far. Voronwe's faith in the Light and in his Goddess Jaguar
drove him onward through failure after failure in combat with orcs and drow
alike. Loss of life, supplies and equipment from failed assaults on the wicked
and tainted was unsettling but in the end only fueled the fires of dedication
within him to continually strive to attain purity and be an example of courage
for all to see.
