Description
An average height human is standing quietly here. He is entirely bald on
his head and has no eyebrows. Obvious burn scars can be found across
his face and neck. The scars are not recent.
Despite the smoothness of his head, the light fails to reflect from its
surface. His clothing is quite meticulous and tidy and he presents himself
well. His movements epitomise the grace of the more agile races such as
that of the arials. He looks comfortable with his weapon as he adjusts his
position. His eyes, slightly green and out of place without eyebrows scan
around the room. As he tilts his head, you notice a small tattoo of a
flame on the other side of his neck.

Fire (Part 1)

Fire is Beautiful, Fire is Wonderful, I love Fire as much as I hate Fire.
To understand Xalic and fire, first we must go back. Xalic was a prodigy child of
relatively humble beginnings. He was human boy of Galadon. His family, extended
and their friends were mages of the light. Their lives were mostly spent helping
others of the light, bindwebut some ventured out after evil. Xalic grew up with kindness,
empathy and love.
As I mentioned, Xalic was a prodigy, he had an impressive ability to understand
basic magic. His father pushed him to learn the path of the Invoker at very young age.
Xalic had a special gift for channelling heat to a much greater extent than that of other
elements. Everyday Xalic would practice turning his hands in to mini infernos. All day
and night he would turn his hands hot and practice. Until one day during practice he
pushed a little too hard and the channelling did not stop, it kept going, building up,
everywhere around him became on fire, his house was burning. He could not stop
the channeling. Eventually the fire spread to him, burning his clothes, his skin. He
was eventually put out with water, not before being left with burns to a quarter of
his body and part of his face. The hair on his head and his eyebrows gone and it
never grew back. Following this episode Xalic went in to a deep depression.
His family, with love and empathy offered much, but it did not help Xalic get over the
incident. The depression changed him, the magic never came back, it was completely
gone, it seems he would never cast another spell. Over the years, Xalic became
more influenced by others outside the family circle, those with different ambitions,
such as thievery. By the teenage years, Xalic had completely detached from his family
and only spent time with friends that could hide in the shadow and manipulate their
body in artistic martial arts.
Eventually Xalic joined the assassin guild. Despite his peers that migrated between
the light and neutrality, Xalic remained true to the light, for this was so entrenched
in his upbringing. But none in his family understood a life without magic or living
in the shadows so the distance remained.

Xalic started to progress titles in the assassin guild until one day there was another
incident. He was hunting gnolls, taglos and forest burners in the forest of nowhere.
The forest burners were lighting the forest on fire and one day the flames got close
and suddenly Xalic got flash backs from his childhood. He became confused and
disorientated and before he knew it a tiny forest guardian was dead. This was the
defining moment for Xalic, this was the day he knew that he was truly of the light.
Not that he ever wasn't, but now he knew for sure now, he could not be tempted
to the grey. Xalic vowed that he would never do harm to another being of the light.
Xalic continued to grow and fire remained a big part of his life, he was always attracted
to seeing fire, but at the same time, did not want it close. The love and hate of fire
was a burden Xalic had and could endure. This endurance gave him practice and
over time, he thought he could endure more challenges.
The war between light and darkness forever rages on. He learnt that those of the
fortress make a sacrifice, they sacrifice a life of peace, a life without murder to change
the world. To go out to the darkness and defeat it, to get their hands bloody. They do
this to protect others, so they do not have to. Xalic felt that his struggle with fire has
strengthen him and he could take this sacrifice. Everything came together, the love
of the light from his family and his desire for them and those like them to live in peace.
His new assassin skills had become formidable and capable of taking on the darkness.
Finally his ability to make sacrifices and come out stronger. Xalic now determined,
took a big step towards a new future.

Xalic spoke to the captain and told his story. After long discussions Xalic found himself to be a
squire. What a joyous day for Xalic. He immediately went to his family home where he
discovered a social gathering of his extended family. He had not been invited, which was not
usual for the times. He spoke of the pledge he made to join the Fortress and his mother and
father immediately began munching on some pie on the table, but it may as well been
humble pie. Some of the extended family were not even aware there were squire and maran
assassins before. The day turned in to celebration as finally Xalic was no longer seen as the
black sheep of the family but now a becan, soldier and protector of the light.
Xalic now at home in the great fortress, took to study the ways of the squires, scribes,
acolytes and marans. He was interested in the relationship with fire as fire always remained
on his mind. He learnt that the source came from the god Shokai and his phoenix banner and
now marans are the spirit of fire and wrath. Indeed the guardian Maran Tara'Bal, where
Maran means wrath, Tara means spirit and Bal means fire. For all time, marans can heal from
fire itself. One day when the fortress was raided by enemies, Xalic noticed the
absorb some energy from fire. This perplexed him for he continued to live with the trauma
that fire hurt him and so badly. Yet he remained attracted to the light, the heat and the color.
Xalic was exploring with another one of the light, known as Fauques. They were below
the depths in a place of great evil. They fought creatures called aboleths. They were
fighting one, an elder in fact and had almost killed it, but also Fauques was very hurt.
To Xalic's surprise the Elder Aboleth placed his charm on his mind and attempted to
control it and take his virtue. He was unable to flee from the creature. The Aboleth
forced Xalic to attack Fauques and he hit him once. Unfortunately this gave the
opportunity for the Elder Aboleth to finish off and kill Xalic's friend. Xalic did not
swing the final blow, but upon Fauques' death he felt that he had contributed. While
Xalic takes time to reflect upon this action and he plans to make amends in a way
personal, Xalic reported this to the Fortreess by scroll as to serve as a warning to all
about the lengths that the wicked will go to in their attempts to destroy us.

One day Xalic woke up and noticed a few hairs sprouting on the top of his head and a couple
eyebrows hairs as well. To Xalics dismay though, they did not last long and soon after he was
fully bald again. Thinking back, he connected the short lived sprouting to the fireshield
provided by Antaluvion Malherion. The invoker assisted Xalic gain his final ranks in a dark
place known as the Ruins of Maethien where nightwalkers from the shadow plane resided.
For some time Xalic was protected by the elemental shields, including the fireshield. As each
shield was placed there was a feeling associated with that shield that seemed normal, but the
fireshield was especially experienced. Xalic could not put his finger on the feeling, but was
somewhat stimulating and slightly painful at the same time. The connection came as he felt
some tingling on the places later some hair began to sprout. He reasoned that once he no
longer received the fire shield so regularly the hair growth stopped. This created a new
mystery for Xalic, he lost hair due to fire, but why would the fireshield start regrowth, there
is no source of fire that the shield is protecting against.
After further experimentation, Xalic was able to discover further hair sprouts on the back of
his hands. This was achieved after using the Sword of the Crusader for many battles
continuously. Like with the fireshield, they disappeared quickly over more time. It was not
practical to continually battle creatures and he had other swords and daggers that were
better at times. The Crusader sword attacked with a burning flame and while swinging it he
could feel tingling at both the palm and back of his hands.
Yet more experiments yielded negative results. Xalic managed the courage to overcome his
fear for the sake of knowledge and touched hot surfaces, then waved his arm through fire and
finally allowed minor burns to occur. Xalic's attraction to fire and fear of fire remained
though and the experience was quite horrifying for him. Most unfortunately no experience of
the tingling occurred and the burning itself gave terrifying flashbacks to his childhood.
Xalic concluded these experiments must simulate the negative aspect of his fire connection.
While the Fireshield and Crusader sword the positive aspect of his fire connection. But the
difference was unclear. He speculated that the former was related to being a victim and the
latter was related to strength.
Xalic planned to continue this exploration of fire, and while he was not so vein about his lack
of hair, he could not help but think part of his soul was damaged and perhaps it could be
repaired by further following this line of inquiry.
