Description

A slender winged creature hovers slightly above the ground. Not very tall by standards of the avian folk, his height is just over six foot. Large deep dark blue eyes blink slowly as he casts around a scrutinizing glance giving his gaze an elusive hypnotic aura. A medium-sized eagle shaped ebony beak curls sharply downward. His bright blue-gray plumage has a cyan sheen on legs and arms, a train of dark cyan feathers cascades over the back of his head. Massive graceful wings tipped with deep violet sprout from his back. His body seems well trained, lean but muscular arms and agile legs ending in sharp black talons show the grace of an experienced fighter. On his left forearm the remains of a demon shaped tattoo can be barely seen as if he tried to wipe it away unsuccessfully. He wears an assortment of armor but nothing that would hinder his movement in combat. Several short but deadly looking blades are tucked to his belt. He has an air of confidence and assurance about him and holds himself quite upright.

Role

Escape

Added Thu Feb 28 21:29:29 2008 at level 17:
A year later Nysmos's son kept his final test before the elders
of the castle and the part of it was the demonstration of his
martial skills. Xubetok had taught his new-found friend many
good tricks he had learned in Arial City's guards academy, and
Nernys's performance was excellent. At the evening after the test,
showing his appreciation, he asked Xubetok what he wishes and
Xubetok answered: "freedom". They had a long talk for the whole
night, about the magic and corruption, life and spirit, as only
good friend can talk. Xubetok begged Nernys to leave the castle
together while it is not too late for him. But Nernys wasn't ready
for a such big step yet, all could do for Xubetok is to help him
to pass the alarming barrier. Next morning they prepared Xubetok's
escape and on parting they had sworn to stay friends and
show honor to each other should they even meet again.

At the sunrise Xubetok left the castle. He had one hour, as much
as Nernys could provide to his friend delaying the alarm. A hour
later, enraged Burawchebel rushed to chase the runaway but returned
with no success (perhaps, ordered by lord Nysmos, he didn't try hard).

Several weeks later, when Xubetok reached Hamsah Mu'tazz and settled
there, he knew what he wants to do with his life. He have decided
to seek those who put the spirit above the power, who prefer to
develop themselves rather than relying on granted or stolen. Those
who have hearts not tainted by magic, souls not corrupted by politics.

Slavery

Added Thu Feb 28 21:28:36 2008 at level 17:
One who has spent some time in any magic university is able feel
the aura of spiritless around such places. Politics, betrayal,
race for power and positions are common when many mages gather
together. Nysmos's castle wasn't an exception, quite the contrary,
these virtues were much stronger among the castle's inhabitants.
Lord Nysmos wasn't a fool and he felt it more that anyone else,
but he couldn't change his fate. However, he wanted to keep his son,
Nernys, away from the taint and he had plans for the young arial
he had captured during the last raid. Xubetok had been made a
sparring "toy" for his son. Knowing that younglings adapt easily,
Nysmos also anticipated that they may become friends in future
and they eventually did.

Xubetok couldn't blame his fate too much; he got lucky enough
with his position and his life wasn't miserable. But what he had
seen in the castle left a sour feeling in his heart. And he was
not free. Unfortunately, there were no chances for him to escape.
Those few of captives who tried were slain.

Demonstration

Added Thu Feb 28 21:27:54 2008 at level 17:
Several captured arials, including Xubetok, were standing in a
courtyard. With a wry smile, Lord Nysmos announced: "Listen, worms",
then paused, added "flying worms..." and chuckled to himself.
"If you decide to leave my castle on your own, squire Burawchebel
will deal with you". "And I'm glad to introduce him", lord Nysmos
snapped his fingers and a short figure stepped out of the shadow
alcove. "Gnome!", some of captives were about to laugh but the cruel
gaze of a murderer from under the hood forced them to change their
minds. Lord Nysmos pointed to one of captives and said "You!"
Guards poked the beaten arial to the gate of the castle.
"You are free now... If you make it to the hills. Run!"
The arial jumped up and flew away from the castle hastily.
Five minutes later lord Nysmos turned to Burawchebel and commanded:
"Your turn". The gnome uttered some words, turned into a shape of
an eagle and swiftly followed the arial chasing him with amazing speed.
The distance was growing short rapidly and the arial decided to try
his last chance, dropped to the ground and ran to the nearby forest
trying to hide there. The eagle landed quickly, turned into a lion
and caught the arial in a few jumps, clawing him mercilessly.
"I hope you've learned the lesson", lord Nysmos said to the captives.
"And I also will be very courteous to inform you that my castle is
surrounded by the alarming magical barrier, so Burawchebel will always
know if any of you decide to throw a dice."
Xubetok's life in slavery had begun.

Ambush

Added Thu Feb 28 21:26:12 2008 at level 17:
Xubetok was born in Arial City. His father was an ordinary and not
very successful merchant. He wasn't happy with his life and wanted
to try something else for his son. As a child, Xubetok was sent to the
Emperor's guards academy. As years passed, Xubetok became a trained
fighter and once he turned 16, he asked his father to join the next
merchant's caravan to the outside world.

In the first day of the upcoming spring the caravan departed to Galadon.
A week later the caravan set a camp for the night at Tir-Talath
outskirts. At midnight, when most of merchants were asleep, the camp
got attacked. A few guards were ready to set the alarm should they
notice bandits or wild animals near the camp, but this time it was
something very different. A wave of demons and winged shadows,
guided by dark mages, rushed in from all directions. Defenders were
overwhelmed quickly and the slaughter had begun.
Xubetok awoke when one of raiders, a hooded figure with a demon,
had broken into his tent. His father made a desperate attempt to
save a son, but the mage ordered his demon quickly: "Kill!", the demon
charged into Xubetok's father and tore him apart. "Noooo!". Xubetok
jumped to the mage furiously and thrust his blade in the mage's back.
That would be a foolish attack in any other circumstances, but the mage
was distracted by Xubetok's father and failed to react in time.
The demon, hungry for blood, turned on his master and slew him.
Suddenly, a shimmering portal had opened and the raider's leader,
lord Nysmos himself, stepped out of it. He threw his net with thousands
of small poisonous spiders at Xubetok rendering him immobile and helpless.
The last thing Xubetok heard before he went unconscious was Nysmos's
mumbling: "He was a fool anyway but this one looks amusing...".

Prologue

Added Thu Feb 28 21:23:58 2008 at level 17:
Many years ago the High Chancellor of the Scions of the Eternal
Night had ordered lord Nysmos, his most powerful conjurer, to lead
the expedition to the ruins of Maethien. The mission was successful,
mysterious sources of power were discovered. However, Nysmos had
decided to keep them for himself. Eventually, the expedition camp
had developed into a small hidden community of dark planar mages
living in a new-built castle near the ruins. Ancient secrets had
became their upmost success and their doom. Fearing the wrath of
the Chancellor they could not reveal their presence. Isolation,
politics and the hunger for power have rooted the corruption in their
heart deeply. They had no choice but to continue their devastating
studies and ambush merchants' caravans passing nearby just to feed
their demons.
