There is a time I forget.  I was young.  I had passion, feelings.  Love 
you might call it.  

I do so dislike that word.  

It is the right word.

I loved her.  In all her grace, her wit, her charms.

I wanted to keep her.  Forever like that.  I should have.

Instead I tried to be...better.  I think that is what they mean, when they say 
"your higher angels".  It's shit, all of it.  Lies and worse to make you
act how they want.  To control you.

Oh, how I wanted her.  Her precious eyes, violet and bright, flashing in the
darkness.  Her hair with the slightest tinge of gold in it, glimmering in 
the dim lights we kept.  We spent days together, just each other.

It was...heavenly.  It is how I think they must mean when they use that word.

That is usually shortly before they kill you, of course.

So I...loved her.  And it was ..heavenly.  

One of my kind cannot love?  How exactly then do you think we procreate?
It is probably not the same as for our sky-blinded kin, but we do love.
I would have kept her safe, served her, enjoyed her, but no.  She had an
eye for power, she did.  And the aptitude too.  She went to join the mages, 
and learned those spells that the invokers did.  I tried to join her, but I do not 
possess that..flair.  I flunked out.

I should have been there, that day, perhaps I may have taken her place.  Likely I 
wouldn't have.  I got to see what was left.  She did not go quietly.  Or slowly.

I took a small bit of what was left of her, to remember her by.  I keep it still.

I left then.  Not before helping myself to a few things.  Or slitting a throat
or two.  I will not be going back, not nicely at any rate.

I left for this world above, with its harsh light.  The glaring light of day,
they call it.  I found a new life up here.  And a passion.  I like to hunt mages,
you see, like those she trained with, those who were better than her, that practiced
their cantrips on her, broke her.  Those little spells they used, so very
fancy.

I will hunt them all.  Why not?  There is no love left in me.

Unless I eat her dried up violet eye.  Then I suppose there is.  Ha!

Once an "idealistic" dark-elf, if such can be said to exist, he 
has had his heart broken.  He is callous, cold, but that's not really a new
thing.  He hunts mages.  That's new?  Perhaps, but it is where he wants to 
focus.  He has always liked to possess things.  Not always gold, not always
jewels, but those too.  He is greedy for everything.  Life.  Love.  Possession.
That is perhaps the word that best defines him.

He will seek out Skreenak, having read of him, and seek to possess the things
that he has lost.

He will also seek out the village.

And probably kill as many people as he can.

Maybe.  If they have something he wants to possess.

Most all my life I have held those damned pages with the hope of 
gifting them to the one I hope to have as my patron.  Until now.

Coqui came upon Vhriha and I while learning, slew us, his magics holding
me long enough that I could do nothing, and I ended up fighting a shark
for most the whole time.
He took those bloody pages.

I will make sure that this is paid back to him.

They have not been particularly troublesome while I was learning.  Now,
thought, they begin to pester.  Not exceedingly competent, nor coordinated,
but a nuisance all the same.

I came to the village, Tharlingon saw me from the eastern road, and followed.
The ranger, Nalaea, came with a phoenix's cry to join.

"I did not call for aid," the giant lies.  Again, we fight, and again
the ranger comes.

Still, when I leave the village and down the road, neither had the
sense to follow me.
A distraction, but the only mage to battle will hide within the Inn and 
boot me as soon as I am noticed.

The training will be good then.

The "Star", Lyeeth, managed to kill me finally.  I was wounded badly,
had a plague, from trying to gather items for Tahren's forge.
I was getting near Voralian City, and was intent on getting to the village to cure
the plague.  He struck, chased me down as a cheetah.

Two mistakes I made, I could have changed my destination, gone underground
or under water, that would have thrown him off.

Alternately, instead of focusing on getting to the village I could have
stood and fought.  

It was my own mistake in keeping a single option in mind that led 
to my dying.

That was foolish.

I want to be Commander.  My King wants me to be Commander.

So Commander I will be.  And come back when I have it.

With the recent losses to the village comes great opportunity.

I took quick action, and was promoted to Commander.  I return to
speak with King Skreenak, having achieved that goal in what seems a
small period of time.  

What is next, though, that is the question.  I have not given that 
thought yet.  I will be feared though, mages will know that I am their death,
and the rest will step aside when I come.

I will think on that, I know my King will want to know what is next.

There is a pillar within the village.  This pillar has the names of those 
who are immortalized for their lives in the village, inspirations one and all
for future villagers.  That is the immortality I seek.  To have my name
carved upon that pillar.

The village grows some, though I seem to have trouble holding on
to a drillmaster.  I have put the centaur forward.


My aim right now is to keep the peace in general with the cabals that 
are aggressive, specifically the Empire, while freeing us to hunt mages
wherever they hide.  I have been successful in that so far, though that 
may change.  Kobar and I have had a reasonable rapport prior to Hyara
offering advice or whatever.  I don't care what he did, but I do not want
to have to waste my time getting the head back from the Palace every
time I wake again.


Beyond that, this may be the least strifeful time I have spent in the village,
and the hunting has been good.


And I like it when the hunting is good.

A missive from the High Priestess:
Greetings my dear Commander,

I hope you have given consideration to my proposal.  If you agree to it, I shall have a writ
written for you, granting temporary permission to enter the Palace and be escorted to
my chambers.  I do expect you to be clean, though the manly musk of combat is alluring
I wish my spider silk sheets to stay clean.  I shall make a journal entry of the event
should you agree.  Do not tarry in this decision.  A simple yes or no.

With regards,

The proposal is simple.  A tryst with the aim to produce a child.

I will accept.  She is lovely, and talented.

And I would have a child.

"Greetings, my dear High Priestess.

Aye, I will come, you are too tantalizing for me to resist, and I would
have a child.  The only condition I have is that they spent time with me
as well as you.

I will be there at a convenient time, freshly bathed and anointed, but
do make sure there is no stink of mages on the way, else I will 
have to kill them first.


Or let them be near, if that pleases you more.

I had thought for a brief moment there that the huts were getting filled.
I should know better.  We are fewer now, not many more than the scions,
though I will keep striving to find and recruit any who are worth helping
to build a hut.

Frustrating, but the pendulum always swings.

I have also heard naught from Lord Panmorne in ages, I think his attention
strays from the village for now.  He will hopefully return his attention
to find a vibrant village, with many huts built, and a fresh pile of skulls
in the center.

Tennaxa gave me her condolences.  I knew now why.  Then I found out.
My Empress has passed, I do not know how or why or when.  Taerlyx tells me
that her heart gave out, and that the child did not survive.

I will need to find out more as I can.  

I asked Icaeos what happened, he said that she fell to their pack, and took
her own life.  Icaeos was one.  I asked him who the others were.

Mystrillania told me.  Herself, Rayangha, Suillesnu, Ihol, and Icaeos.
She said that they were not there for the Empress, just for the Codex
and that Sulirye was not there immediately, but came and charged in against
five.

After falling, Mystrillania told me that her ghost seemed angry, sad, and a few things
were taken, but Mystrillania did not.

Mystrillania has offered her sorrow at my loss, for my sake she said.

I want to rage, kill them all.  I will wait and think.

I asked my Drillmaster, what would he do if he were in my place.
I know those who slew my Empress.  My child.  While I do not mourn Sulirye's
death, I mourn the loss of hope.
Ruvende's words are wise.  If it were in the moment, he would kill them.
She was no direct enemy of my village, but she was no friend.

Would I want to raise a child to die in battle?

That is our life.  We are villagers.  Berserkers at heart.

I want to let go, kill them all, those who slew her five on one.  The healer,
using the staff of striking to pummel her to the ground.

I will not.  That is the nature of this war.  People die.  Hopes are crushed.
And still I will endure, and fight, until my last breath.

I mourn what will not be.

My long-term goal remains the same, to be the first name inscribed 
on the pillar in ages.

Short-term, though.  I have not managed to kill Faeha, and she has
killed me many times.  More than anyone else except perhaps Lyeeth
I think.  I want to kill her.

And I want to get Drucin made into an anathema.

Should be easy enough for someone who has always gotten what he 
wanted for the glory of King Skreenak!

A long time, and not a surprise, but Drucin is Emperor.

After years of holding out for an apology, I do what is best for the village.

We leave the cabal items in the other's homes.
We leave the centurions alone, unless they're being used to trap us.
We hunt who we will, and accept the consequences.

An agreement is made then.

Bad enough I lost the storm shear to some prick of a Magistrate.  

Now my sack was stolen by winged nightwalkers, and the things in there
will not be had again.  The practice dagger given me in the academy, 
the hunter's bracers, the things for surviving a rot.  Most importantly was
that ragged little doll Garrick had given me for the child that never 
was.

These things are gone, and will not be again.  I feel I am getting older, to 
miss these things.

I am tired.  I have accomplished much I have wanted to.

The last of things though.  Drucin will not be an anathema, but
I have managed a peace with him that serves the village.

I still work to have my name on the pillar, but I will not know
that at all.

The pendulum swings again, and as it does, the times change.  I have 
been through more drillmasters than I could have wished to,
albeit part of that was my mistake with Draveneth.  

I have not so many times past the healer to go.  How hard is it to
finish with as good an ending to my life as can be?  I do not
know how many are left in the village to inspire, nor if there will 
be new blood, yet the village has existed for time immemorial.

As I write this, new blood comes to the village.

I wonder if I will outlast this one too.

I will fight on, and try not to die as much as I have been.  The village needs
this constancy.

And if that is what I have left to give, that is what I will give.

I spoke with Lord Panmorne about extending my life, after I selected my Drillmistress.
Bandages, something to hold a good bit of water, soap, and anything else to 
care for a beaten and battered body.

The better the things, the better the results, of course.

There is an event being held by Zicdorgle, a tournament for the orphanage in
Balator.  I may not be able to make it, but I am well represented by the 250 gold
that I gave him to fund changes there.

My reasons for the gift are many.  

It helps Zicdorgle secure in his mind that he can be effective without magic.
It shows the world that the village cares about more than just killing mages.
It adds to my personal glory.

The only way this war ever ends is if minds are changed.  We cannot stem the
tide of mages, this past while has shown that.  The hint of strange new forms 
brought out a wealth of shapeshifters to kill.  And while I enjoy the hunt,
fewer mages is better.

And to think of the things I owe in this life to my King.

Today we bled in the arena for the benefit of all those children
slaughtered in the orphanage of Balator.

Much coin was raised, and I was the winner until having to face Erorm in the arena.
The first battle went well.  The second, I adjusted tactics.  It did not go well.

Bloody Maran.

War with the spire now, because their Provincial is a dunce and rude.
Interesting things to fight now, between the monstrous forms and the winter
forms.  Those are always interesting to fight, different and novel.

King Skreenak is dormant, which sucks, but c'est la vie.

The village has decent numbers now, which is a pleasant change.


And I still feel like I have a long while to go, unless I continue being 
stupid in battle, but there is a certain thrill to fighting against odds
and prevailing even if it is only one of four that dies.

Once I was to have been a father.  Garrick or perhaps Lord Garrick I should name
name him, gave me a doll for the child that was to be.  And then she died, 
and the child I had hoped for was not to be.

That doll was lost to the winged nightwalkers.  

Another was found in the darkest times where the shifters learned their 
monstrous forms.  I kept it safe, a memory, a keepsake, and something to
shed tears for.  Surprised?  That I can cry?  Why?  I bleed, I feel,
and I dream.  Dark dreams these days, but dreams all the same.

That doll I gave to one who would play with it, give it a home that my child
never will.  That snaffle, a patchwork thing that knows not where its 
parents are, will I hope give it a home.

A silly thing perhaps for a Commander of the village, and the Bloodiest Bastard
my King has ever seen, to care about.  And still.

That chapter is done now, and greater than the little charm that the snaffle
gave me is that feeling of closure, of the end of that one thread that 
I feel would outlive me.

These last years, centuries perhaps, I will keep my Village strong, and there
will be much blood spilled, and many more skulls for my throne.

I have lost some dreams, so darker ones take their place.

As I near the end of my days, old age or battle will take me soon.
I give praise to my King Skreenak, his gleeful mirth inspiring me to greater
deeds.  To Lord Panmorne, those whacks upon the head with your walking stick
served to focus me.  To Lady Rarywey, for showing me both the ill and good.  And for
always allowing me into the inn despite being banned for special days.

I hope this life has provided entertainment, and inspiration, and I give
thanks to those I have met along the way.

And for "Lord" Garrick, erstwhile friend of mine while mortal, I thank you
for the gift.  I treasured it as long as I could.
