Yanni Sunburst the Regicidal Sorceress, Captain of the Brigade

Role

Yanni Sunburst was born in a pagan village in the far east.
This village has no name and is home to free-spirits. They
worship no particular God, but rather many of what they call
'Old Gods', of which they worship with ritual, animal
sacrifice, and community-wide orgies. Yanni was conceived
during one of these ritualistic orgies during the winter 
solstace to a woman who was previously thought to be infertile.
It was prophesied that due to this unusual circumstance, and
the time in which it happened, that Yanni would be gifted.
Though, no one knew how gifted.

Yanni never knew exactly who her father was, as he could have
been one of very many men. None-the-less, she lived with her
mother in relative peace and happiness. She was raised to
think for herself and help others when she could. She was
taught to read and write, and found she was quite gifted at
both. Often tutoring much older villagers from a very young
age. She was taught of the old gods and their meaning to the
village, but never truly connected with the village rheteric.
She found herself enamored with the number 13. She did not
know why, but she was truly infected with it. When she would
eat, she would finish her food in 13 bites. When she was sad
she would blink her eyes 13 times, and feel better. When she
was lonely, she would hop exactly 13 times, and someone would
come along (usually to ask what the hell was wrong with her).
Along with many other quirks to go with the number. An odd
one, indeed. (Her and the number)

Yanni also noticed she had innate ability to feel elements.
Water, Ice, Fire and so on. She could feel things about them,
that no one else could. Baffling to her mother and to the
elders of the village, but they loved her anyways. Yanni was
a very humble and gracious young girl. Even though she did
not fully understand the village's religion, she took part
in the rituals and was generally loved by everyone. However,
at the age of 13, she felt compelled to leave. She did not
understand it, but she knew she had to. So under the cover 
of night, she left a note to her mother on her bed, and
slipped out into the night. And that is where her story
truly begins...

Who am I? A question only time can tell, don't you think?
For now, I am Yanni Sunburst, student of elemental magic,
follower of the Lucky Lord, Whiysdan, Maran of the Fortress.
Yes, all true. However, is that who I will be in a month?
A year? Will that be who I am when I die? That is the
biggest question, I think. Who or what shall I be when I die?
I don't know the answer to that, but I can tell you who I
was at the age of 13. I was a girl. Inexperienced with the
world, and lost. I was scared, but I could feel the greater
purpose pushing me forward. I searched for 13 days, with 
little food or water, until I was found. First it was only
a road, peeking through the trees, then travelers upon that
road, then a city.

Fear can be a very powerful thing. I was afraid when I engaged
in my first orgy. I was afraid when I left home. I was afraid
when I stole my first loaf of bread. I was afraid when I 
joined a guild, and I was afraid when I fought my first
adventurer. Lessons were learned with each. Respectively:
I found I was much more desirable than I thought, I found
I was stronger than I thought, I found I could run faster 
than I thought, I found I was a faster learner than I thought,
and I found I wasn't quite as unstopable as I thought... Yes,
fear can be a very powerful thing. But it is an obstacle to
be overcome. Nothing more...

I often think back to my first sexual experience. The
writhing bodies. The heat. The thrusting, and moaning. Is it
odd to enjoy such a thing? Am I wrong, you think? I don't feel
wrong... Though, I am a Maran, of the Fortress. Would my
allies, my friends, understand? Truly I have yet to find out.
These things I keep to myself, for fear of... Misunderstanding...
To be a Maran is to put yourself close to the tainted in
defense of those pure, so others do not have to... So, I 
guess the question is: Am I pure?

Yes, I am a Maran. I have chosen this path, because I truly
believe in it. I am willing to die for it. However, I am also
Yanni, and I have things I like to do as well. I absolutly
ADORE a good story. Preferably around a cozy fire and 
surrounded by friends. I enjoy a good laugh, even if it's 
at my expense. I enjoy history, and books. A long conversation
with a friend is simply divine. I only hope I have what it
takes to destroy so many evil creatures, and not lose a part
of myself.

Ugh! The number 13! It drives me nuts! I love it, and hate
it at the same time. I feel good when a particular cadance
hits 13. I feel just a bit stronger each time, but if it
doesn't... If it falls short, just a bit, it drives me MAD!
I have to find a way to balance. I must seek out Lord Whiysdan
for guidance. It is said that he knows more about the number,
and its meaning, than anyone. If I am to maintain my sanity,
it will be with his help, I think. I hear he is a fan of jokes
and stories, and thus we can relate.

So... Who am I? I am Yanni Sunburst. Fear banisher, orgy
enthusiest, home run-awayer (is that a word?), 13 crazed, 
thief, killer, history buff, joke teller, righteous defender,
and magic user. That is who I am, for now. It makes you
wonder, no? On the exterier, you wouldn't know I was so many
things. Just what is going on in the heads of those around us?
Who are you?

Here I stand: Yanni Sunburst. I am the same, but different. It's
funny how life unfolds. The more I live, the more convinced I
am that it's all one big joke. A prank played by some greater
being. Purely for amusement. Oh well. Still, I shall continue
on. For now, I shall pick up where I left off. Regailing the
achievements and failings of I, Yanni.

Since I last put pen to paper, I have achieved the pinnacle of
my guild and am now, indeed, a master of the elements. It's 
strange... I don't feel like a master. I am constantly learning
new things. About myself, about others, about the lands, and
about magic. Yet, a master I am. It is a good thing, too, 
because I find myself in near constant conflict. Yes, the war
rages on. Ceaseless, it seems. I use my mastery of the elements
to lay my enemies at my feet, and quite a few enemies, I must
say. However, honestly, sometimes I'd rather just read a good
book, or go dancing with friends. Yes, the simpler life appeals
to me greatly.

I have also been given the great honor of being named Captain
of the Brigade. An honor I greatly accepted. A great friend of
mine, Thaedan, once held the position before his ascention. I
like to think I can fill his shoes, but they will be large shoes
to fill, indeed. My plan is to train and fill the Fortress as 
best I can, but also to add a sense of levity. We are defenders
of the light, true, but we are also people, and friends. I hope
to be an inspiration to the Fortress. To show that we can still
have fun and laugh, while carrying out our duty. Being a champion
of the light simply has to be about more than killing the wicked.
We should also be able to reflect the light within.

Yes, I remain Yanni Sunburst: Friend, leader, soldier, dancer, artist,
magi, and so much more. However, I've been fighting in a brutal and
often bloody war since I was a teenager. I'm 42 years old, now. I
try to think if I've changed. I try to remember back to how I was 
before, but it's difficult. Now, don't get me wrong, I am still the
first one to crack a joke, or laugh like a bafoon. However, now I
find I have more nightmares than I used to. More pressures of the 
world. Being Captain of the Fortress isn't quite the care-free life
I had in the village I grew up in...

A few years ago, several children went missing from an orphanidge in
Balator. We searched and searched for weeks until they were finally
found. Some powerful force had pulled them across a sea. As best I
could tell, they were fine... A bit misunderstood, but fine, I think.
The whole ordeal made me think of my mother. I wonder what she would
think of me, now. Would she even recognize me? It also made me think
of what it would be like to have children of my own. It's not at all
something I had given thought to previously. How odd, but when I 
finally found those children, there were tears in my eyes. It's
not something my path will allow, and I accept that. But 
still... A girl can dream, right?

I refuse to succumb to darkness. That vile tainted waste. No matter
what, I will keep my spirit free. It is what truly seperates me from
those who are tainted. I will continue to laugh, and hum my tune, and
drink merrily from time-to-time. These are the things that keep me
grounded. The things that make me who I am. I had a friend who could
keep me laughing for hours on end. Illaeth, the former Prophet. He's
passed, now. However his spirit lives on. Within me, and others who
remember him fondly. Yes, there is true comfort in friendship. In
rough times, it is they who keep me sane.

It is true that I am at the pinnacle of my guild, but not the
pinnacle of who I can be. No. My future holds greater things for
me. I'm sure of it. The God of the 13 has already granted me such
luck and favor. I truly don't know if I deserve such. However,
when I am battling dark forces, I can feel him with me. Every
13th stroke of the sword, he reveals himself. As the cadance of
my spells reach their 13th note, I can see more clearly. I notice
him in the scars of war I wear. Many times there are 13 clear
scrapes on my leg, or arm, or chest. It's a sign.

I have been meaning to write to Lord Whiysdan. In hopes that he
might read my words and find a soft chuckle or even a roaring
laugh in them. I think he would like that. Often, when I'm alone,
I offer up a prayer, because he has given me so much. I can see
his influence in my life every day. He has even influenced my
guildmaster. My guildmaster who offers me 13 pracitce sessions,
and thinks I don't see what he's up to. It's clear as day. Clear
as day.

So. Where shall I go from here? I'll tell you exactly where.
I shall pursue the brand of my Lord Whiysdan, that I might 
more effectively spread the word of the 13, and praise his
name. I shall travel, and see more of this world, for it is
grand and deserving of being seen. I will face the greatest of
evil. Not to show my muscles or powerful spells, but to show
that no matter what, I will not be swayed. I will lead by
example, and be an inspiration to Squire and Maran alike. I
want to be their beacon. To show that darkness can never
triumph. Lastly, I will continue to laugh, dance, and pursue
the freedom of spirit that my mother taught me.

Age has finally caught up with me, it seems. Life is a fickle
thing, like that. Before you know it, you're old and grey. Such
is life, I suppose, but the implications are not lost on this
gal. As I continue in my way, I think it best I take time to
reflect on who I am, where I've been, and where I've yet to go.

I have yet to receive the brand of my Lord, Whiysdan, however
I still feel his presence at all times. Truly, I am blessed.
Luck has always been on my side, and so it continues. Many times
I've been so close to death, only to miraculously escape. Or
times when I needed something to go my way, and it generally
tends to. I can only thank Lord Whiysdan for all he's given me,
and move on. He owes me nothing, so I am grateful for what I
have been given: The luck of the 13, and move on.

As I've aged, I've been blessed to venture this world and experience
things I would have never imagined as just a young girl in my
village. In dragon lairs I've found my courage and faced down
the greatest of challenges. I've battled duergar in their city
and even slayed their king who'se dark heart is renowned. I wasn't
afraid when I was face to face with Trothon, the great lich, for
I had faced similar challenges before, and (mostly) always come
out on top.

The most disturbing of things I've seen are the abominations in
the underdark sea. The experiments being conducted there are
gut-wrenching. I found making my way through there to be one of
the hardest tests of my soul. I felt a great urge to try to 
bury that place in rocks so it would just no longer exist. However
I've no right to slay some of the creatures there that were not
tainted with darkness. I can only pray for a better day, and
take solice that I was able to put some of them out of their
misery.

But the most AMAZING, and challenging thing I've faced on my
adventures has to be the mighty queen of dragons, Tiamat. What
a beast, indeed! A heart as black as night. Heads roaring with
rage and magic. Myself and a small band came upon the beast in
her lair, and there we did battle. I cried out for the light,
and I cried out for my lord. I threw spell after spell at the 
beast, but it barely batted an eye. We were repelled. However,
I'll never forget the fierce eyes of the many heads of that 
beast.

As I stated previously, I was never alone during these adventures
As I have been blessed with luck, my lord has also sent ally
after ally my way. My friends abound, and my enemies fade. I mark
that as a clear victory! Though I have lost many along the way.
Some succumb to time, others to this endless war. Some fall to
lethargy, and some fall to endless suffering. It is sad, but 
these people have played an intrical part in who I am as a person,
and who I want to be going forward. I would be remiss if I didn't
mention them by name, and what they meant to me.

Annalaethina, now passed. One of the finest elves I ever knew.
Strong and courageous. She taught me about inner strength, and
showed me that one does not always have to kill to show true strength
in the face of darkness. She is missed. Grumba, now passed. A
fine dwarf with a heart of gold. His persistance and determination
were an inspiration to many, including this old fool. He is missed.
Illaeth, now passed. Another fine elf who taught me the crutial
aspect of what differentiates we, of the light, and those of darkness.
An elf willing to risk everything to help another goodly soul.
We, of the light, stand together for the common good. While those
of darkness bicker and fight amongst each other, even defiling
one another. Because of he, I have strived to be helpful to those
of the light, and even some who are grey hearted. I believe
Illaeth would have wanted that. He is missed.

Hunsodin, now passed. Courage personified. Never afraid of
even the worst of odds. I'm quite a patient hunter, and much
happier letting enemies come to me. However, Hunsodin showed
me a different approach. Throwing himself into combat and
generally coming out on top. I found this fascinating, and
have implemented many of his teachings. He is missed. Thorawyn,
now passed. Thorawyn was instrumental in how I currently
address those of the Tree. Thorawyn was an ally through and
through. I found his company pleasant and I found his attitude
inspiring. It was through him, that I got my best glimpse
into the teachings and path of those of Thar-Eris, and his
influence is still felt to this day. He is missed.

Though these people are now gone, they are still with me in
many ways. Gone but not forgotten is the common phrase, but
I'll go a bit further and say: They are gone from this world,
but their influence remains, and may even be stronger now.

I am not as foolish as some may think. I know the end is near.
It is clear as day. I feel it in my bones. I don't have the 
energy I once had. I can barely do a cartwheel anymore. How sad.
I truly loved doing those. However! I'm far from done. As long
as there is still breath in these lungs, there will be fight
in this spirit. Darkness has been held in check, but it still
lurks. As long as the realm is plagued, I shall be there to stand
guard.

There is also much more of the land to see. I plan to finish what
my friend, Grumba, started and see the great dragon mother, Tiamat,
felled and returned to dust. I know it's what he would have wanted.
I also want to venture into the inferno. Not for trinkets or
something as silly as power. No no no. I seek to continue challenging
myself against the greatest of darkness. To see how far my resolve
can take me. I, Yanni Sunburst, refuse to be afraid of what goes
bump in the night. I want to see it with my own eyes. And let it
see the reslove within me. That way, it will know that there
are those amongst us who will not bend or break.

I shall also continue assisting others for the benefit of the
light and to the detriment of darkness. As long as I keep allies
protected, equiped, and trained against the darkness their forces
will be in serious trouble. For united, those tainted fools don't
stand a chance.

This goes without saying, but I shall continue to call upon my
lord and seek his brand. Whether or not I get it is of no concern.
For this is the path I have chosen. And my lord has been good to
me.

Lastly, I shall simply continue to be Yanni. I will laugh when
I feel like it. I will make an inappropriate joke from time to
time. I will continue to be a goof in the face of pure evil, 
because they will not break me. No matter how much they try, no
matter how much they strive to do so, I will NOT break.

I've seen war. I've seen happyness. I've seen death and chaos,
and I've witnessed compassion and virtue. What a time, I've had, 
here. But now I've come to the ending of my part in this tale. I 
seek rest and peace, now. I've seen my fair share of death, and
I want no more of it. I shall travel eastward. To my village of
old. And seek their forgiveness for vanishing. I shall rest there,
where I came from. And seek eternal peace.
