Description

A gaunt young man with a pale face stands here clothed in worn black armour, dull and bloodstained. His eyes are bloodshot and rimmed in dark circles. He looks about himself impassively, with only a sneer of disdain across his features. His face is thin and angular, though he is of a large build. He carries an array of bladed weapon with cruel hooks and spikes and a satchel of magical devices.

Role

childhood

Added Wed Jan 21 12:16:47 2015 at level 36:
Now past fourty years old, Ychram had not achieved all that he imagined he
might, though he had achieved much. Born a middle son to a common family in
Hamsah, he had nevertheless spent much time in the library. Disliking the
petty subjects of conversation preferred by his many brothers and sisters, he
better prefferred the intelligent and remarkable things to be found in books.

With access to a huge number of books and parents too busy with his siblings
to miss him much, he read a great deal. He read histories, legends, stories
he scarcely believed about heroes and Emperors who commanded huge armies,
unstoppable in battle with unimaginable power at their disposal. Despite
thinking that most of what he read was fiction, the heroes of his age being
no doubt impressive in their power but somehow not standing quite so tall as
the legends of the past, he did believe that there was much to be learned
from the tales.

The Empire in particular documented itself quite well, and he read accounts
of the lives of many Emperors and council members. This was one among many
other fascinations. His reading was voracious on many subjects, including
accounts of journeys through distant and dangerous lands, the treasures to be
found there and the foes to be faced. He read theoretical books on strategy
and tactics, commerce and politics, manuals of combat and treatises on magic.
He took in all the information he could find, anything that would give him an
advantage in his perceived struggle against the world he lived in.

Over the course of his studies he determined that he would, upon his
sixteenth year enrol in the academy and join the guild of antipaladins.
Finding the notion of undeath unappealing, the antipaladins offered him the
greatest potential for personal power. From there he would take the famous
bloodoath, leaving behind the few ties he'd made in his young life, to join
the Empire and acheive greatness there, by some day taking the throne to
wield the utmost political power in Thera. It was not a subtle plan, nor was
it a likely one, but it was made the the firmest of intentions.

youth and maturity

Added Wed Jan 21 12:19:15 2015 at level 36:
By his eighteenth year he'd killed another adventurer who'd graduated the
academy but not taken the oath, and received his first promotion to become a
full citizen. Dozens more victories followed the first, by twenty five he'd
been promoted to magician therbey being a full sect member, and never yet
having fallen in battle. His confidence had grown by this stage to arrogance.
He thought he was better than anyone who stood in his way, and he had been.

Eventually his first defeat came. Then a second, a third, a fourth. Meeting
with failure for the first time, he perservered against his enemies and paid
revenge on many. He impressed the council members he saw. The Empress herself
made few public appearances. His biggest test came when an unknown dark elf
warrior disarmed him with uncanny speed, destroying his unholy weapon,
freeing a dozen souls and taking most of his armour. The dark elf was never
seen again.

On his fortieth birthday he'd reflected bitterly that he had hoped to have
been named Elite by then, but his guild standing was still too low to be
eligible for promotion. And for want of having claimed enough souls to
control his unholy blessing more usefully, something he had hoped to achieve
sooner. Nine souls he now carries being enough to guard closely but not
enough to give noticeable power.

He bides his time now, waiting for another opportunity to grow his power.
They seem to be fewer than they were, and the battlerager thief Heaghul has
him constantly on alert, being also a constant drain on resources. He has
developed a special hatred for the thief and considers the battleragers to be
of the greatest priority among the enemies of the Empire.

He still finds himself drawn to any kind of hidden or secret knowledge. His
involvement in the Empire is motivated entirely by his search for power, he
has no religious beliefs preventing him from taking an interest in such
topics as the literature found on the dead bodies of fallen cultists, or the
origins of nightwalkers and the torch of shadows. He has no intention of
betraying the Empire, but forbidden things have a special lure to him.

In particular he has been wondering for decades what might be behind the
western door of the upper hall of the brotherhood of the abyss.

Elite Servant

Added Sun Jan 25 06:08:31 2015 at level 40:
He had proved his strength ten times over. He had secured the Imperial Codex
dozens of times, scores of the Empires enemies had fallen in battle when they
dared to face him, which was not often. His mere presence was usually enough
to keep the myriad foes of the Empire at bay, or scurrying into their hiding
places. Outlanders, Battleragers, the members of the Fortress of Light, even
the Cultists of Arkham had learned the consequences of refusing the bloodoath
by his efforts. Eligible for promotion, with the favour of the council and
the Empress, fresh from his victory against the Cult's leader, the Dread Lady
summoned him to the palace. Now perhaps he would receive his long overdue
recognition as one of the Black Sect's elite. His plans to then take his
place on the council were already underway. The Empress' long absence would
not be overlooked, he would secure the votes for his Dread Lady to take the
throne, and take her own seat for himself. He would forgive her the delay in
his promotion, for the time surely was at hand.

His surprise to instead be cast down in the ranks of the Empire to the place
of Black Servant was less than he had imagined. The Dread Lady had saw fit to
question his loyalty. This demotion was not due to incompetence, disobedience
or indiscipline. Once named elite, he would be dangerously close to the
council seat himself. The only explanation could be that even his own
superiors began to fear his growing power - something he considered foolish.
The Dread Lady may have been a pawn like any other, but a pawn to be made
into a queen. He might have respected the effort to demonstrate her power to
influence events against his will, but for her failure to grasp that they
shared the same goal. Or perhaps this was his failure - not to have noticed
that the Dread Lady lacked the ambition to seize the throne for herself after
all.

Decades in the making his plans were no longer merely delayed, but now set
back. Rather than easing his path, the Dread Lady had made herself into an
obstacle, and one he did not know how to deal with. Promotions would not come
for him the way they did for others - his very success was what had betrayed
him, though failure was no remedy for that. New plans would have to be drawn,
new allies discovered, and a different path set upon if his ambitions were
ever to become reality.

The closed door

Added Tue Jan 27 14:07:51 2015 at level 40:
Losing his second weapon was a difficult thing for Ychram to accept. He had
been given to opportunity to sacrifice it for the sake of his career in the
Empire, and refused, so to lose all the dozens of souls inside it so soon
after was a harsh blow. In his anger he spoke his defiance to the Empress and
soon goaded her into pronouncing him anathema.

This was not so great a hardship in practical terms. None of the Empire's
soldiers could really prove to be a match for him any more than the enemies
of the Empire had been, and none had yet made the attempt. He still had some
secret allies within the imperial ranks, and many had stated their wish to
see him return, but it was difficult to see how. Despite his distate for
prayer - 'best left to paladins', he had for the second time in his life
entered the Divine Asylum hoping to speak with the Overseer, but nothing had
come of it.

Without pride or purpose, nor any consistent opposition it was difficult to
find ways to pass the time, and difficult to know he was merely passing the
time. Without donations to replenish he had become quite wealthy, and without
battles to fight he was well stocked with all the magical paraphenalia used
to ply his craft. A soul taken here and there when the opportunity presented
itself provided welcome distractions, but he keenly felt the isolation
brought about by exile.

He had joined the Empire for selfish reasons of course, but at some point
over the years he had built an emotional attachment to the place. He missed
the way the vanquisher greeted him, he missed the ghoul who guarded the sect
hall, and he missed being part of something greater than himself. He'd made
gestures here and there toward helping his old allies, but it was not the
same.

Long hours spent in silence with the Dark Knight chipped away at the time
remaining to him. The western door had become something of an obsession, now
far beyond mere curiosity. The chains and padlocks were useless and
ornamental, the thing having rusted shut in the immemorial past, with no
record of what purpose it served or what lay behind it. The closed door
seemed symbolic of the abrupt end which had befallen his ambitions. Closed.
Forbidden. Forever. One could go mad this way..

Ever Forward

Added Fri Jan 30 05:18:30 2015 at level 40:
Things had taken a turn for the worse. Once fighting a paladin, he had been
attacked by centurions placed nearby, with no chance of escape. A younger
Imperial thief had stripped away his armours following this defeat. Afterward
Sindrir, his firmest ally still remaining in the Empire had finally been
pressured into attacking him. Even dressed in cheap platemail from Galadon,
wielding a spear purchased inside his guild Ychram had fought off the blade,
as talented as he was, but he had not lived all these years for the sake of
merely chasing people off. He had been left with nothing before, or so he
thought when he had lost his fullest weapon and been cast out from the
Empire. Now he found himself with even less. He had lost even a measure of
pride, having stooped to prayer like any common paladin at the urging of
those still within the Empire, and having been rebuked by silence. He was
aging too, and the ravages of time were taking their toll on his body.
Nothing remained to him at all - nothing but his will to go on. What threat
could an old man in rags pose to the unified force of the Destuvian council?
Individually, Ychram fancied his chances against all of them, but even at the
height of his powers he'd needed to break a sweat to fight certain enemies in
their twos and threes - and the Empire went to battle in groups much larger
than two or three. But there was no alternative. He was desperate now.
