Description

A ascetic of what can only be assumed is half bred origins is here. Traces of elven graces can be seen on the much burly build of a man. Coal black skin is stretched taught over well toned, yet lithe muscles that carries him with an elvish grace. A large hawkish nose is framed to either side by high cheek bones with two violet orbs rising above them like a surreal moonrise over mountain peaks in the dark. Other than his silver eyebrows, no hair is on his head, and sweat often beads on his pate before running unimpeded down his neck like creeks and streams down a mountain side. His ears sweep back from this prominent face nearly four inches before acuminating in a sharp point.

Role

Dark Beginnings.

Added Fri Aug 1 09:15:53 2014 at level 1:
My story begins in a dark place, literally dark as the darkest night, and
dark with evil seeping from the very ground itself in Teth Azeleth. I am
told I was born of a an unholy union, consecrated by an unholy pact between
my father, a slave, and a Lesser Matron bargaining with Devils and Demons to
increase her station within this forsaken realm.

What ever it was, I had only known life as a slave in the fields of feed, the
rock fields of fungus. This was not the feed for the Dark Elves themselves,
rather, for their livestock. They would never lower themselves to the point
of not eating living flesh. No, this food would never do for them. Yet it
grew and flourished here, feeding their dark realm version of cattle and
sheep. These fungi though, were not even what we slaves were fed. If we were
fed it was the sludge and molds that grew from the damp rock. Again, one can
only be thankful for any form of sustenance in times of the greatest need. To
steal from the mouths of their livestock was to flirt with death, something
that came swiftly to those of us who were lucky.

This year was to mark my thirty third year, which fell on the third day of
the third month. Portents abounded about my life and death. The sacrificial
altar was being prepared for a dark night in the darkest depths. The lack of
light itself was being sucked in by the blackness of this ritual, that was to
be my ending, or beginning depending on whom you ask. It was as I was being
cleaned by the Matrons themselves, that the completely unexpected happened.
A great commotion could be heard in the square, as an uprising of the slaves
stormed the House walls. Adamantite slashed and whips cracked, and yet the
overseers were over run, trampled and beaten with everything from hands to
chair legs. All things became a weapon in this great cacophony of
pandemonium.

A man, who claimed then to be my father in short breaths, drove back the
Matron as spells lashed into his very hide. I never knew my father, but could
only obey his last command, to run.

An Ascetic Life.

Added Fri Aug 1 09:17:14 2014 at level 1:
I know not how I ascended to the surface of Thera, to be perfectly honest.
Hook Horrors and Displacer Beasts, things only whispered of in the slave pens
ripped at my flesh, and confused my already lost mind. Yet, something,
perhaps the determination for Life itself drove me and protected me.

I came forth from the ground, the first night, amid what I later learned was
called a Blizzard. Winds whipped, and snow fell. The rags of my shoulders
and waste could not even begin to help me keep warm. I lay there exhausted,
snow piling on and around me. Was this to be my fate, to run so hard and so
fast, that I would only succumb to something, at some point?

This was when a man, reached into the snow, and grabbed me by the arm. He
pulled me into a sitting position, and shed his own robe to put around me.
He gave me a kindly smile, as the winds lashed at his own now bare skin. He
stood up, with out a word and strode directly into the wind, still smiling.
I knew not what to make of this kindness, for all I had ever known was
betrayal when things were given so freely.

I shivered and shook for a few minutes until my wits gathered. I knew that if
I laid there, even with this new found warmth I would die. I stood and
trudged forward, following this mans bootprints deeper and deeper into the
woods. At long last I found him, coaxing a fire to life in a circle of trees
that grew so tightly together that hardly a draft passed through their
boughs.

With the fire crackling lightly beside him, he sat there with a deep
contemplative look on his face. His eyes were closed and a low humming could
be heard. I sat across the fire from him for hours before he looked up with a
smile.

This is when my life changed. This is when I learned how slow and long
conversations with an Ascetic can be. This is when I vowed myself to learning
to survive with little, to give what I have, and to nurture all of life.

Finding Direction in the Quiet Moments.

Added Thu Oct 2 09:19:36 2014 at level 18:
Years have passed since I sat in silent meditation before my mentor,
protected from the blizzard by an oak thicket. Much has passed since that
time. My mentor, for I never knew his name, knowing my heart, pointed me
silently towards the Paladin's guild. He must have known there was much for
me to learn in their halls, as he had.

And learned I have. But I feel I have learned more from my time in the world,
putting my faith into practice, than before the tutelage of the Guildmasters.

From traversing the fields and farms, I have witnessed the gifts of life. I
have helped shepherd's birth the lambs on the coldest nights of spring. I
have spent hours watching the slow cracking of the robin's shell, the gift of
life to this world beginning. And to watch a serpent reemerge from his skin,
the husk of his old life left behind, only speaks to my beginnings through
and through. These are the times that I feel most in touch with what is truly
sacred. What it means to be of the Light.

It has been in these quiet hours that my thoughts often turned to the
whispers in the wilds of the Ancient Strienat. It has been said that he
patrons the sanctity of life in all its forms. Perhaps under his guidance, I
shall once again have a time of flourishing enlightenment.

Challenges of an Ancient.

Added Thu Oct 2 20:27:04 2014 at level 18:
I have now stood before the Greenhoof, my intentions laid bare. His questions
have given me much food for thought, and much insight into myself I had not
known before and have yet to know. He challenged me to look beyond the
miracles of life for insight, and to delve into the reasons and means the
Paladin's Guild upholds life.

One of the main conclusions I have come to, is that as devout warriors of the
Light, the Paladin's know the plight of some of the meekest forms of life as
we are called to care for them all. Many times orphans and wounded animals,
are over looked as a nuisance, but we are called to be generous to those most
in need. This is where Paladins may excel in supporting forms of life were
other guilds may overlook them in favor for their lust for war or obsessions
with the wilds.

Also, the Venerable Ancient and I spoke briefly of the Paladin Code. He said
to me "You cannot be a paladin without following the Code, yet you cannot
walk my path by following the Code blindly" I believe then not in denying
the Code as a means to a moral path, but rather, to question it. To follow
the letter would be to be blind, yet to probe and conclude 'Why?' That I feel
is the direction I must take. When the Code was written, the first Paladin's
must have had a similar experience in order for the Code to be formed.

The first and perhaps the most important point of consideration is the Ninth.
Strienat challenged me thusly, "How can one who walks the path I do condone
the deaths of others who are protected when they walk into a city?" This is
where I shall start to search for my first, 'Why?'

Also, the Ancient asked me to seek a particular individual, Ilaenuru, whose
insight into these trials may shed some light upon these topics for myself.

Thoughts of Ilaenuru's Insights.

Added Mon Oct 6 11:01:48 2014 at level 26:
It has been years some time since I addressed this journal, but I feel that
sufficient time has passed to allow my meditations to ruminate. In this time,
I have also spoken with the one requested by the Ancient Greenhoof, Ilaenuru,
as well as the Elder Prophet of Light. I am unsure if their words granted any
more clarity, but my meditation on them may have.

How Ilaenuru spoke of his way of following the Path of Life, did not speak to
me as much as I am sure it speaks to him. Perhaps it is his path as the sword
of light, but the justification wrang hollow to me. He attempted to draw
difference between respecting the laws and law keepers and obeying them. I
feel in a way, this is only paying lip service to the Laws of the Land.

What I could agree with from him to an extent is his explanation of how the
Law fails the people it was designed to protect. The Laws are reactive, he
told me, and by the time the Law is able to act, the sins of the perpetrator
have often been completed. Because of this reason, it is why he has taken a
proactive stance, I am sure, and why he is or seeks to be a Maran.

But this explanation still does not provide me the adequate answer to the
Ancient's question that I seek.

Speculations on Law and Innocents.

Added Fri Oct 10 22:48:52 2014 at level 35:
This day I implored the Ancient's presence in order to present my insights
and to seek further answers to his questions. I fear that I have only come
away with more challenges to my beliefs, seeking to see the beliefs of
others, but yet, these "Challenges" as the Greenhoof called them are the
nature of understanding.

I presented to him how I can follow the Code and respect the Laws of the Land
and those that keep them, and still uphold the path of Life. I told him of my
meditations on the words of the Law, and how the essence of them is in the
protection of the innocent, for even in their hunt, the Magistrates are
banned from hurting innocents. After Strienat's discussion of the life giving
forces of chaos and what follows, free will, I feel this needs to be
revisited and fleshed out.

Murder and death, ends life. Not only that, but with the end of life comes
the end of ultimate end of one's free will. As one lays cold in a final
death, then no actions can they take, and they are robbed of their future and
their future decisions. That is not to say that death is not natural and does
not come to all of us, but the act of slaying another forces another's hand
in the ultimate manner.

This is the what I see the Magistrate's and their Laws seek to protect, these
innocents. Those whom are innocent, should be allowed to go about their lives
as they see fit unmolested by those that would rob the goods or the life of
another. As long as these Laws and Law Keepers abide by this, I can respect
them.

This does not in itself answer the question, of how can one respect them,
when one whom murders wanders freely under their protection, but I feel it is
one loose strand in this Gordian Knot, and perhaps a loose thread to pick
with the Provost.

On Light and Life.

Added Wed Oct 15 09:32:30 2014 at level 40:
Being born under the surface, it is hard to come to grasps with the power of
the Sun, the warmth that reached deep into my being, seeping into me from its
rays. Since my first steps in its glow, I have come to realize true power of
it.

Plants do not thrive where its light does not thrive. The son of an oak, must
be cast far from its progenitors crown, or else it will not thrive. Grow
perhaps it will, but it will not realize its full potential until a means has
happened that has brought its parent to the duff, where then the younger oak
can usurp its place, basking fully in the Sun. These plants, Oak and Corn,
Grass or Dandelion are the basis of our lives. It is in their death, that we
all are able to live. It matters not if it is cattle or deer that sustain our
lives, all of these first, must eat of the Earth and of the Sun.

Yet, life exists in the darkest of caves, but, even there, I feel that there
is a connection to the Sun. The fungus and molds that are the grasses and
fodder of the most basic life of the Underdark, feed upon the roots and
ancient bones of these plants.

It is in this way, that all things spring to life, with bones and flesh made
of earth, and their spirit and animation provided by means of the Light of
the Sun.

Sin and Virtue.

Added Fri Oct 17 09:52:42 2014 at level 49:
I believe there is a difference between the actions of sin, and the
motivations. One can never fully overcome the actions with out first
addressing the underlying causes. It is in this manner, I believe Murder is
hardly ever performed without a reason. Many theological references refer to
the most these reasons as the Seven Deadly Sins: Lust, Gluttony, Greed,
Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride. It is from these deep rooted carnal feelings
that dark thoughts are allowed to germinate in the minds of the unpure, and
thus actions can be taken upon them.

But, the ward against such Sins are there corresponding Virtues. It is with
these that I seek, and will continue to teach others the means to temper
these lurking desires, that I feel we all have to some extent or another.
Performing these Virtues is how each of our inner light shines. It is through
these that we conquer, within ourselves, the desires to end and obstruct the
Life and Light of others.

These Virtues and Sins are:
Lust and Chastity
Gluttony and Temperance
Greed and Charity
Sloth and Diligence
Wrath and Patience
Envy and Kindness
Pride and Humility
