Description

This broad giant stands at just under ten feet tall. Thick limbs and massive shoulders makes him appear somewhat squat compared to his kin. Two glittering black eyes stare out from a wide face, a thick mat of red hair covering both cheeks and chin. He possesses a somewhat large nose which appears to have been broken too many times, giving his face a slightly strange cast. The hair atop his head is a brilliant scarlet with threads of grey, cascading across his shoulders and down his back like a sanguine waterfall. He is dressed in simple chainmail above the waist, though his legs are only protected by leather leggings. A pale white star-shaped scar marks his brow, clearly having been carved some time ago.

Role

A bloody coward.

Added Thu Dec 19 23:04:49 2019 at level 14:
Screeeach.

Screeeach.

"He was always a bloody strange lad, your boy."

Screeeach.

Screeeach.

"Always starin at me with those better than you eyes. Felt like I was on
bloody trial I did."

Screeeach.

Screeeach.

"Ain't damn sure how you two be related, he ain't anythin-"

Thud.

The duergar cut off his rant as the six feet of greatsword sank into the
ground between him and his silent companion, the whetstone thudding into
the blood-slicked mud scant seconds later.

"Quiet."

Silence fell between the two, the crackling of the fire the only sound in
the night. Uncomfortable, but the kind of uncomfortable between those who
have known one another a long time and find themselves in disagreement.

"Gave everything. Gave sword. Gave future. Gave pride. Gave strength. Gave
law." The giant was the first to break it, great head turned to stare into
the fire, his aged face cast into shadow.

"Aye, that you did." The duergar paused, then cursed. "It ain't your bloody
falt fella. I ain't good at this heart to heart stuff if you get my drift.
"

His companion shrugged massive shoulders. "Is family. Is blood."

"You be havin other brats. Loyal lads and lasses. They'll be fine
berserkers one day."

"Was the strongest. Best son. Understood."

"He ran. He be a bloody coward."

The giant didn't 'answer.

Dissonance.

Added Thu Dec 19 23:05:38 2019 at level 14:
Ysforgul had grown up as a child of a berserker. By all accounts it was a
good life for a giant; strength was respected and he had no limit of those
that would clap him on the back and tell him that he'd grow up to be just
like his old man, a grand hunter of mage scum. He had never felt at home
among the huts though; the organised chaos of village life set his teeth on
edge like an arial scout trying to sing after a few drinks by the fire.

It was for this reason that he would often stray outside village bounds
into the ruins beyond; through shattered alleyways and over piles of rubble,
dreaming of what had been and was no more. Indeed, if there was one thing
which he loved about the village it was when his father would sit and tell
tales by the fire of ancient battles, and of the great clash between giant
and giant that had been fought on this very ground. Of Ysbaddaden, Ford,
and others. Those titans had not feared magic. Those legends had not feared
anything. They had looked upon what they had and found it wanting; and so
reached for more.

His sibblings were different. They didn't seem to care about past glories.
They'd talk about being mageslayers one day, about being Drillmaster or
Commander.

Ysforgul didn't care. He didn't want to rule some village. Didn't want to
hunt mages. They were almost all weak. Where was the glory? Where was the
conquest? The greatest warrior must test himself against the greatest foes.

He learned swiftly not to voice such things though. It had been the
greatest thrashing his father had ever given him, and his black rage had
been something terrible to behold.

Yet his disdain for the village only grew, as did his hunger for something
more.

The bonds of blood.

Added Thu Dec 19 23:06:33 2019 at level 14:
Ysforgul did not much care for his sibblings, but they were family. Every
great child of fire knew that family was sacred, and Ysforgul new in his
burning blood and bones that he was a great giant of the one law.

So when he came upon one of the cloud giant defender's eldest son bullying
his younger brother such a black rage descended upon him that there was
only the fire in his blood and the kinsman's fury that must be dealt.
Ysforgul was not a tall giant by most standards, but he was huge and broad,
suffused with rage. He beat the cloud giant with his great hands, broke
bones and skin beneath his fists until the screams drew the adults. It was
not the shouts or orders that broke through the bloody rage that had
consumed him. It was his father's shocked disappointment, written upon his
aging face.

And for the first time Ysforgul truely understood that his father did not
believe as he believed. Would not shatter the giant's of sky and sea that
dared think themselves their equals. That he would speak of the one law...
but not live it.

The young giant fled.

A worthy cause.

Added Thu Dec 19 23:07:40 2019 at level 14:
Ysforgul's time spent outside the village aided him greatly in his escape
to Galadon. With empty pockets and stomach, he wandered the dark streets as
he bruded. The fire in his blood had long since cooled, and the night's
chill was harsh and unrelenting.

Perhaps he should go east? Find the kingdom of Kiadana-Rah? Surely there
were giants there that understood that conquest and dominion was their
birth-given duty? That there lessers must bend the knee?
So where were their armies? Why did they not march forth?

A wind picked up, and a tattered piece of paper fluttered in front of his
face. Irritably, he went to knock it away, before the title caught his
attention.

"The blade sect is recruiting!"

With thick fingers Ysforgul smoothed out the poster, squinting at the small
words.

As he read did his blood begin to burn a new. Yes. This could work.

A reminder.

Added Mon Dec 30 22:18:38 2019 at level 51:
Ysforgul had always heard about those teachings the monks would impart upon
their students who had reached the heights of power in his guild. He had
known abstractly that they would be what honed his skill into true mastery
when the time came, but had given little thought to it beyond that. So when
it finally came time for him to visit the monks, he thought for a while
about what he wanted to get from his training. His father had been a
student of the trapping beneath thunder and cry of thunder styles. Great
teachings for a great giant. But his father had also failed. For all his
strength, he had given his life to a flawed cause. One that would see him
fight alongside giants of the sky and sea. Ysforgul was strong, but with
the armies of the glorious Empire he was stronger still. Ysforgul didn't
fear magic, for what did a great warrior have to fear from such a
thing?

But words were easy. Ysforgul had learned that too. The fragile sects said
things all the time. No. Ysforgul had to prove it. Perhaps it would not
serve him well, and perhaps he would even be mocked for his choice. He
would study the enigma of the thirteen. It would serve as a reminder of the
price of weakness for the rest of his life.

And he would smash his enemies all the same. They would only mock him once.

The sky giant.

Added Wed Jan 8 06:50:49 2020 at level 51:
Ysforgul was torn concerning the useless sky giant that had joined the
Empire.

On one hand, it was a useless sky giant. Only worthy of a swift death and
to be crushed beneath the heel of his betters. That was the way the world
worked.

On the other, there were similarities. The giant had lived in the village
before leaving. Ysforgul couldn't deny the parallels.

But it was a useless sky giant. Ysforgul would never serve such a creature.
If the sky giant became his superior...

Then Ysforgul would not compromise as his father had. He would never bend
the knee to such a lowly thing. The giant could serve the empire as was
right and proper.

Providing it remembered its place.

Embers.

Added Sat Jan 18 06:41:44 2020 at level 51:
It was a difficult problem to resolve in the mind of Ysforgul.

Might makes right. It was written into the law of the sect. It was a truth
that resonated so fundamentally with him that to consider it incorrect
would be anathema, in more ways than one.

Yet if that truth were to be indeed accurate, something must be done.

There was more dust upon the throne than upon the eastern road. An Emperor
that ruled not through force of arm or spell, but through missives
directing the rapidly diminishing legions to do outlandish tasks. Ysforgul
had seen the Emperor thrice in his life, and even in those glimpses had
found little that he could consider mighty. The council was gutted more
thoroughly than even Ysforgul could achieve with his axe, and he was rather
proficient in such things by now.

No high priest by imperial decree, no dread lord. A war master whose fate
was yet unknown, having vacated the battle shortly after being felled.

A great army needed a mighty leader, and mighty generals too. One could not
have true greatness without both, and the Empire currently lacked for
either.

The raging furnace of imperial dominion was already guttering out, and few
seemed willing to stoke the fire once more.

But something must be done, so Ysforgul's frustrations quietly smouldered.

Conviction.

Added Wed Jan 22 11:30:38 2020 at level 51:
The problem with mages, Ysforgul decided, was not they were dangerous like
the village would have people believe. Was not that they practiced magic,
or anything of the sort.

Some were powerful. Some were even exceptional.

No. It was that they concerned themselves with so many things which did not
matter.

Ysforgul respected the Emperor had some battle prowess. Indeed, he had
thought he had judged the necromancer too harshly with his previous
concerns. Strength was to be respected. Strength of arm. Strength of body.
Strength of conviction.

The first two, fortunately, were easy to gauge. Ysforgul felt by now he was
quite a good gauge of physical strength. The magic made it a bit harder,
but it was all about the same to him.

The last, though? The last was the hardest, and the most important.
Ysforgul knew well there were two parts of conviction: to speak a thing
then to do the thing as well. The Emperor, at least, did the former: but if
there was anything Ysforgul had learned about the Emperor in the last
couple of years...

It was that he believed in something, but it was not the Empire. He was
seeking something, but that thing was not imperial dominion above all else.
The casual disdain of even basic imperial tradition and what had either
been ignorance or insult that had been to speak the Dark Lord's name...

It could not stand. He had been tasked to raise an army, and an army the
Empire would have.

And a new Emperor, too.

One who believed.

Plotting a course.

Added Fri Jan 24 08:48:45 2020 at level 51:
With his determination to take the throne established, Ysforgul had begun
to ponder the council seats. He wasn't sure yet if he'd need to actually
overthrow the Emperor; the high priestess seemed to believe the madman was
going to get himself killed by doing some magic stuff before being old
enough, whatever that meant. He decided to plan for the case that he would
need to do so, and be pleasantly prepared if he didn't.

He was confident he'd have the high priestesses support, if only because it
would be a much harder life for her if Ysforgul failed and suffered the
fate of all those that attempted to seize the throne and stumbled. While
abject laziness was not a trait he usually found helpful, in this case it
would likely serve his ends. It might be best if he supplied her with some
gifts to further gain her indulgence, but he wasn't terribly concerned.
They understood each other well enough.

The shadow lord was a much more troubling problem. The only remaining
member of the council from before the Emperor was raised, it seemed likely
that he had given his vote to the current Emperor from what Ysforgul
recalled of the former war master's fury at the time. This was a bit beyond
Ysforgul. It was possible that it had been a political gamble that had
failed, or genuine support. Ysforgul actually quite liked the shadow lord.
He was a good imperial, and served the empire well. His motivations were
beyond Ysforgul's political skill to decipher however. He decided he'd need
to try to learn more about what drove the shadow lord and go from there.

Until the black sect ceased languishing in failure and could elevate a
candidate to be dread lord, Ysforgul had little to do there but wait, and
attempt to be first to approach prospective blacks. It would be good to
gain their preference early.

Current events.

Added Fri Jan 31 10:23:32 2020 at level 51:
Things had been difficult.

The maran armies swelled while the imperial legions remained stagnant.
Ysforgul worked with what he had while continuing to offer the oath to all
of worthy strength for the glorious Empire, but few were willing to serve.
When he claimed that the mighty would rise, the awkward question inevitably
came up--then why was a blade not upon the throne? Ysforgul did not have an
answer, as he wouldn't lie. It was frustrating--could they not see the oath
was the greatest cause in Thera? The Empire was the only path that
understood its own purpose, and unswervingly followed it.

Until now.

Ysforgul had penned the missive to the Emperor requesting blessing to bring
imperial fury down upon the orcs for raising a hand against one of his
prized centurions. A formality he'd assumed, but he could not give the
Emperor reason to doubt his loyalty at this stage. A formality that he had
not witnessed the events himself: they had all heard the brave imperial
soldier call out for aide. What more needed to be known? There must be a
price for defying imperial dominion.

Yet it seemed this time, there would not be. So ysforgul quietly seethed.
He would have his reckoning for his soldier's death, one way or the other.
They cost a fortune to train!

Fortunately, there was slight progress on that front. The high priestess
had come as close to openly pledging her support for him as it was possible
to get without outright stating it, and the black sect had finally gained
two candidates. Ysforgul worked to ingratiate himself with both: he was
unsure who would attain the seat of Dreadlord at this stage, but he could
likely work with either. That process would need to continue until he had a
more definite idea of who would rise to the occasion, then more attention
could be focussed upon that individual.

The shadow lord remained somewhat of an enigma, though Ysforgul felt he had
made progress. He still suspected the thief was a supporter of the Emperor,
so had determined to treat his vote as most likely lost: but if he planned
for the eventuality, any alternative was only for his benefit.

Paranoia or premonition.

Added Sat Feb 1 03:37:29 2020 at level 51:
When the Emperor had told Ysforgul they needed to speak, he'd felt instant
alarm. Had his plan been discovered? It was too soon. He had not yet
positioned his soldiers for a decisive strike. How had he known!

But it was not Ysforgul's plot which the Emperor had discovered. It was one
supposedly forged by the lord of vice. A plot to supposedly put the high
priestess on the throne, and destroy the empire from within. Ysforgul found
the idea fairly ridiculous--the high priestess would likely be horrified if
she thought she might have to rule an empire. Hard work was not something
she particularly favoured, Ysforgul had learned (repeatedly).

Yet the Emperor claimed to have made an oath to her lord not to demote her,
in exchange for a personal boon. Not the wisest course of action Ysforgul
felt, though the Emperor must also be as strong as possible. Despite there
differences, this is one thing they agreed on. So perhaps it had been worth
the cost.

But was it paranoia? Or legitimate. Why force the Emperor to take such an
oath if there was no purpose? Ysforgul felt uneasy.

The Emperor had also risen in his estimation, however. Ysforgul would never
agree on this facination with the acquisition of knowledge above all else.
Strength was the measure of might and might was what let them enforce
imperial law. Ysforgul knew this.

But the Emperor had stated he would step down to save the Empire if
necessary. There was a ruthlessness in that, to put the cause above one's
self. Ysforgul may not think him a good Emperor, but perhaps he had been
wrong to think him a bad imperial soldier. Not all could be great giants,
born to lead.

Yes, Ysforgul had decided. His course remained unchanged; he would have the
throne.

But perhaps the Emperor would have his respect too, as one imperial to
another.

Anchors and impasse.

Added Tue Feb 4 14:02:12 2020 at level 51:
The Emperor had talked of stepping down and letting Ysforgul take the
throne. Unfortunately he had also said that he would require that he be
dread lord forever in such a circumstance.

Ysforgul found the idea impossible. The Emperor had the capacity for the
position, it wasn't in doubt. He'd even make a good one Ysforgul supposed,
whatever the measure of that was where the black sect was concerned.

But forever?

Impossible.

Not only had it been such a misguided oath that had turned the Emperor into
jumping at shadows and seeing plots everywhere (Ysforgul conveniently
didn't consider that there in fact was at least one plot to overthrow the
Emperor), but a leader was judged not only by himself, but by his generals.
If the Emperor decided to vanish for decades on end once again and Ysforgul
let him remain Dread Lord, it would be an embarrassment.

No. He would not begin his rein with an anchor about his neck. The Emperor
seemed to hold the new dread lord in some distaste--that was good. Ysforgul
had long since established a good working relationship with the vicious
little magician, which played into the stroke of fortune which had befallen
him.

The Emperor had ordered Ysforgul to vote for the Shadow Lord in the event
of the coup, and had stated he would have the Shadow Lord vote for Ysforgul.
This would secure the throne for the Emperor, for the Emperor seemed
certain that the plot would have the Dread Lord vote for the High Priest
and her vote for the Dread lord.

But it conveniently secured Ysforgul the one vote he was still unsure of
his approach on.

That resolved all but one issue...

Ysforgul had no idea how to actually instigate a coup.

Did it simply require a majority? Or did he require all of the council to
agree. The latter could prove more than simply problematic, and it was
unfortunately hard to enquire about such things without seeming slightly
more than merely suspect.

Until he could determine a way to learn such vital information, he
reluctantly found himself at an impasse.

But he was close.

Discord.

Added Mon Feb 10 23:40:42 2020 at level 51:
The first time the imperial council had come into overt conflict with one
another was something Ysforgul had not been prepared for, though should
have been. The shadow sect seemed to be the true loyalests, while the lone
black earned much of the Emperor's disdain. There was an irony in that
Ysforgul supposed, but it had been inevitable something would spark the
fraying fuse of the dread lord's anger.

As far as Ysforgul could tell, the dread lord had requested use of
something of a shadow. A fairly routine thing, but somehow it had exploded
into near open hostility between the dread and shadow lords. Ysforgul had
emerged from his hall just in time to hear the raised voices.

This was a problem.

Ysforgul had worked too hard to cultivate the dread lord to have him
removed by the Emperor, who was seeking any reason to secure his position
with an incomplete council. The shadow lord would never come down on the
losing side of that exchange. Swift action was needed.

Fortunately, simple problems typically had simple solutions. A brief
conversation with the shadow that had caused the insult and some exchanging
of treasures later, Ysforgul had that which the dread lord hungered for.
Its swift loning cost him nothing, while placating one council member and
solidifying his image as a problem solver with the other.

The council was assuaged. Now he needed to prepare for the Emperor.

May the great rise.

Added Mon Feb 17 08:02:29 2020 at level 51:
There were few people Ysforgul trusted in the Empire. Even within his own
sect his lone elite had been raised up by the Emperor despite Ysforgul's
misgivings. The empire had many citizens, but Ysforgul was not blind. They
did not love the empire as he did. They all had agendas. Goals that they
felt the empire would serve.

So he kept his plotting to himself. Schemed and waited for the opening to
drive the sword home.

Or that had been the plan.

The former high priestess and Ysforgul had worked together much of late.
They had toppled false tyrants and demon lords. Ancient dragons and maran
armys. In his less charitable moments Ysforgul would consider that she was
a better blade than most of his sect. Service was always to be rewarded,
and yet when Ysforgul offered her rewards she was ambivalent. To see the
empire grow was enough, and so she continued to rise in Ysforgul's esteem.
If Ysforgul could claim to have someone he felt he could possibly confide
in, it may indeed be her.

So when she had finally indicated there was something she wanted, Ysforgul
had been curious. Her service would be rewarded if it was within his power.

Which it wasn't.

To sit once more at the high table. Yet Ysforgul knew it was impossible.
The Emperor's oath to the lord of vice made it so. Yet service was to be
rewarded; and so it would be.

Ysforgul made his intent concerning the throne clear, and so gained his
first co conspirator.

So they would rise or fall together.

Complications.

Added Fri Feb 21 07:34:07 2020 at level 51:
Ysforgul hated complications.

He liked the world to be simple and for everything to behave in predictable
ways. With the knowledge of how to begin a coup conveyed to him, it had
been a simple enough matter to secure the dreadlord's support. The lack of
love between him and the emperor had been no great secret, so he had been
the best place to start. Then the dreadlord had supposedly gone into hiding.
Ysforgul did not know the whys or the whens, but it seemed everyone
couldn't stop talking about it. It was probably true. A... complication.

Ysforgul didn't doubt his right to rule. But he had to acknowledge for now
it might be out of reach, which grated on him. Fortunately the Emperor had
finally declared open war with the orcs, so he was molified somewhat.

But it was a far more insidious complication that was becoming apparent to
Ysforgul.

He was getting older.

It was small things. The crackle of bones when he would awaken and rise
from his bunk. The accursed cold's bite being that slight bit more
noticeable, even through his armour. A weariness that was hard to shake.

But the real problem?

He did not have a successor.

The idea of his death coming did not concern him. He would die gloriously
for his empire, and it would be a thing of stories to come. But leaving the
blade sect to be lead by a ... sky giant ...? Impossible. The idea sickened
him. The Emperor may have promoted it, overruling Ysforgul's decision, but
he could not stand for the idea.

He must find a successor.

One worthy of the title of war master.
