Description
You see before you a tall dark-skinned man, stretching to nearly six and a
half feet in length. His head is devoid of hair, a smooth, black-brown orb.
You notice a flowing script tattooed onto his head, starting at the nape of
his neck and ending just before the crown of his head. You seem to feel, as
much as see a second tattoo, covering the top of his head. It is a ruby
scarab, centered on the top of his head and seeming to pulse with power. He
has a strong jawline and squared, muscular features. His face seems to be in
a permanent scowl, and his dark eyes add to his grim demeanor. His nose
appears to have broken on more than one occassion. The slightest hint of
wrinkles point to more summers spent on campaign than many. A neatly trimmed
black beard adorns his chin, a few inches of it hang below the chin, with
what appear to be finger bones braided into it. His body is thick with the
musculature of a man in his prime. His shoulders are broad, and the rest of
his body fits proportionately underneath them. His armor is mismatched, but
cared for with the eye of a well trained soldier.
Role
A Moonlit Slaughter
Added Wed Dec 29 23:38:31 2010 at level 8:
It felt good to be on the hunt again. So much training, so much time devoted
to the young warriors without families. So much time devoted to the village
that has become his home. So long since he had waged proper war against the
foul wizards. He slipped through the wooded hills south of the Balator
fields and came to the outskirts of the great desert city. A bird call from
the shadows just beyond the cleared track was answered from the high city
walls and Thrym strode forward into the moonlight. A rope dropped to the
ground and Thrym grabbed it up. His years of training made ascending the
wall quite an easy task, a light work out. He nodded to his two fellow
conspirators, guardsmen of the Sultan and slipped into the city. Sneaking
about was generally not his way, but his own private war required it.
Respected instructor by day, vicious killer by the few nights he was able to
slip out of Balator. His target this dark night was in the northeast of the
city. A wealthy family of magicians. The parents powerful invokers for the
sultan, their children all tainted by magic. In and out of the torchlight,
the reaper approached the large home. In the morning, the denizens would
speak of the fury wrought upon that once happy home. The two guards had not
even drawn their blades. The scene inside was one of slaughter. Hacked and
bloody bodies were all that was left. Two of the four children had not even
risen from their beds, their heads lying on the floor in pools of blood. The
body of the father appeared to have been stripped of skin, and some crude
trophy fashioned from his mangled corpse. The trophy lay in the bed next to
the wife, who had been pinned to the bed with a large piece of wood, one of
the legs of the kitchen table. Not one soul was left alive in that home, all
had been killed, or, so the story was told.
A Dawn Reprieve
Added Wed Dec 29 23:46:33 2010 at level 8:
The sun rose over Balator and Jaragh looked towards the village and saw the
ageless barbarian coming down the path to the orphanage. Wondering to
himself what brought the trainer down to the orphanage at such an early hour
he went out to meet him. As Thrym neared, Jaragh noticed a small bundle in
the thick arms of the veteran campaigner.
"Blessings of the gods to you, Thrym. I see you have brought another poor
soul to us."
The reply was more of a grunt than anything else. Thrym handed the
dark-skinned child over and turned to leave.
"Where did you find this one?" the question stopped Thrym in his tracks.
"Awful young. Is he even weaned from the teat yet?" Jaragh's curiousity
grew with the odd behavior of his old cohort.
"How am I supposed to know?" grizzled the barbarian in response. "Bah.
Getting soft in my later years." Thrym grumbled and came back to check on
the babe. "His family is dead, send him to my school as soon as he is
ready."
A Midday Scuffle
Added Wed Dec 29 23:52:17 2010 at level 8:
The circling children screamed, yelled, laughed and cried as they gathered
around the two combatants. Fists, blood, dirt and spittle whirled on the
ground. The dark-skinned boy rose from the fray and brought his fist high,
smashing it back down into the face of the blond-haired boy. A crack could
be heard as blood and teeth were splashed to the playground grass. Jaragh
arrived at the last moment, snatching the hand of Zaahir and holding it with
ancient strength as he pulled him off of Sinni. It seemed the two would
never cease fighting. Soon both would be old enough to be Thrym's problem.
Jaragh could not wait. He never thought two children could make him so happy
to be rid of them. He looked at the face of Sinni, grimacing as he knew he
would have to go and see the healer. Zaahir must have been training, because
Sinni usually got the best of him in their frequent fist fights. They would
both be capable warriors.
Death at Dusk
Added Wed Dec 29 23:56:32 2010 at level 8:
The dust in the air gave the setting sun a reddish glow. Another day at
Thrym's small academy was coming to an end. Zaahir and Sinni were coming off
of the training field when the call went up. The orphanage was under attack
once again. The two of them were fed up with the attacks and gatherd a few
other like-minded individuals, formed them into a small force and headed
south. Running quickly through the untravelled alleyways and lawns of
Balator they came into the playground just as two humans and a duergar
pressed the assault and looked to make a third fresh corpse. The surprise
attack of five young students of Thrym was too much for the unseasoned
adventurers. Zaahir screamed a guttural warcry and practically tackled the
duergar as he struck with raw anger and strength at the dark dwarven shield.
There was little technique or tactic in his assault, but he struck with fury
again and again and again. Slowly whittling the duergar down, a scratch
here, a cut there and his opponents strength began to fail. He kept striking
and the duergar fell to the ground, dropping his shield. At that point the
killing blows began to land. First the shield arm was cut to the bone, black
blood squirting from the wound. Next multiple slashes to the chest opened
gaping woundsd, a final strike embedded the blade in the skull of the
mutilated carcass, blood and brain seeping onto the ground. Zaahir yanked
his blade free and turned to help his friends. He saw they did not need it,
but three of his companions were down, and Sinni was one of them. Zaahir
rushed to his side, but it was too late. His close friend had been run
through with a spear and his entrails were spilling on the ground. Sinni
motioned him closer and whispered into his ear the words that Thrym had beat
into their minds every day of their young lives. Remain pure. He died, and
Zaahir returned to the school for warriors. He would remain pure. All
would feel his pain.
A few notes.
Added Thu Jan 13 11:23:51 2011 at level 18:
- His tattoo reads Alm, Nqa'a, Almwt, in the language of the Sultan. Pain,
purity, death. Through pain you become pure, and once pure, you are able to
embrace death. What he has decided is his mantra of sorts, in the way that a
teenager decides he is going to live his life without understanding exactlt
what life is.
- Pain. Has known only pain and struggle his whole life. Was a runt until
he hit his growth spurt around fourteen, so he was often picked on and
hassled at the orphanage, and the school. Now that he is able, he will cause
pain to others.
- Purity. Beaten into him at the School for Warriors by Thrym. Remain pure
at all times. Forsake magic. He does this more out of familiarity and
comfort more than anything. But would never admit that to an outsider.
- Death. Death is the final escape, the end. Once you have been purified,
you are ready to embrace the final escape and pass into the world of the
spirits.
- In his travels has learned of the teachings of the Noldarian Smiths. Will
seek them out to learn more, and is interested in the concept of forging
oneself and others. Intends to do this through painful means.
- Also leans towards teachings of the Cult, embracing primal instinct and the
darkness inside. Does not believe in redemption, or adhere to any moral
code. May kill wantonly outside of the war against magic. If he is not
quickly put in his place by village elders, could snowball and get out of
control.
- al-Sali. The sword, in the language of the Sultan. He chose it during his
days at the school, after meeting a palace guardsman. It was the only time
he felt any kind of pride.
- Zaahir is very impressionable. Something major happening in his early life
could shift the whole character. This will be less and less likely to happen
the older he gets.
Few updates
Added Sun Feb 6 08:42:24 2011 at level 43:
- He is becoming more soldierly, and much less likely to stray from the path
his life has taken, with any kind of redemption or change essentialy a lost
cause.
- He is less serious than in his youth, taking well to the life of a soldier.
He is more apt to joke with and cajole his fellow villagers, but to
outsiders he remains quite serious and ill-tempered.
- He has become an Initiate of the Scarab, seeking to learn more of the
cult's teachings. This should lead to the obvious conflicts with certain
Villagers, as well as more of a penchant for hunting members of the fortress.
- He will still seek the teachings of the Noldarian Smiths, again on the
subject of forging. But he does not seek any favor or marks (obviously) from
Thror.
- The mantra of his youth remains, but now he actually understands it.
A Twilight Betrayal
Added Tue Feb 15 13:38:09 2011 at level 47:
Zaahir made his way through the ruins, blood dripping from his armor. His or
a magi, he could not tell. His head was bowed, because the sun was in his
eyes. He did not even lift it as he stepped through the breach and
approached the bulwark outisde the Village. For that reason, he bumped into
the giant defender at it's gates. He looked up with a snarl, and that is
when he noticed the smoke. His hut was aflame. He looked questioningly at
the giant, who simply shrugged and resumed his guardianship of the village.
Words formed on Zaahir's lips, but they were left unsaid. He turned in anger
and trotted off towards the east, towards Arkham, the Temple, to Embrace the
Darkness.
More updates.
Added Tue Feb 15 13:40:10 2011 at level 47:
More updates.
- Zaahir feels betrayed by the Lords of Battle. He feels that he was doing
the right thing by drawing his fight with the Maran away to the Temple.
- He initially was going to attempt to return and rebuild his hut, but has
decided against it after much thought and meditation.
- He will now focus on re-opening the Temple, and become one of the Trinity
of Shadows. Which position he will seek is as yet unknown, as he needs to
feel out others and determine how he can be most successful.
- He will seek a way to enact vengeance upon the gods of battle, but will not
do this by warring with the village.
- He still hates magi, and sees magic as the belonging to the gods.
- As with anyone who gets older, he is becoming wiser, and will begin to
write and preach a bit more. He is still a soldier, and will fight when it
is needed and he beleives he has a tactical advantage.
- He will seek a way also to become immortal. Whether that be through
natrual or unnatural means, we shall see.
*If he reaches hero, lives long enough and makes an impact, I will submit to
become a member of the staff. I'll send a note and email if it gets to that
point later.
