Role
Going to be late...

"Zakuun, you had better hurry - you'll be late!"
"Yessss, mom."
"Don't 'yessss, mom' me - and don't you dare wander. Heavens know what
evil lurks out there. You head straight home after - no exceptions. And
don't talk to strangers, you hear me?"
"*grumbling* Yes, mother."
"Excusssse me?"
"Yes, mother. Love you mother."
"Love you too baby - now get moving!"
As Zakuun hustled out, the door shut. Now normally this action wouldn't
draw much attention - even Zakuun's mother hadn't noticed it for a long
time but she was now on the lookout. The door had shut.... with no one
near it. Originally she thought it was some weird coincidence but then
she began to notice when Zakuun's drawers would sometimes close by
themself or other mundane actions would occur autonomously, like his milk
glass moving within his grasp at the table. Trying to find the answer,
she boldly approached Madame Monambren about her special boy. After a few
days spent on Arcanus Avenue, she was told that he had no skills of magic
and no divine inspiration and was calmly but firmly told to not waste the
Madame's time again. It wasn't something he could seemingly control or
even knew about, these things just occurred without a second thought.
"Without a second thought"....he was moving them with his mind!
Zakuun was always exceptionally bright - sometimes it was downright scary
how smart he was. Answering questions you never asked or always guessing
the right answer. The other kids teased Zakuun saying his strange eyes of
two separate colors could see anything. His mother knew that had nothing
to do with it. Putting two and two together, it was clear to his mother
that his mind was special. As fascinating as this realization was, it
scared her immensely - it was likely because this brought the memories of
his father to the surface and the thought of him always made her skin
crawl. She had once lived in the great city of the clouds, home to her
race and there she met a dark and mysterious arial to whom she gave her
childish love. She soon discovered her love was member of the dark
arials, slowly over time she learned the truth behind the lies that the
man spewed forth and that his "love" had run down her leg and was gone
forever. He was ruthlessly evil and had dark plans for his new family...
plans she gladly ruined when she ran away to the city of Arkham. It was
not easy living in the slums of the little harbor town but the local
church was a blessing and helpful when she really needed it. Life was
hard but not too hard.
His mother quickly opened the door to watch her boy run down the busy
streets of Arkham. She got a glimpse of him rounding the corner with a
smile on his face - it made her smile.... that's when she saw him.
Walking towards her through the crowd with a sickening grin, shaking his
index finger back and forth in slow motion. She froze in absolute terror.
Daddy was back.

With his demanding writing practice finished at the cathedral, Zakuun
made his way through the dark and dismal streets to his house and
immediately he knew something was wrong. Where was his mother? Zakuun's
mother was always on the steps when he came home... and not only that,
but he could feel something deep inside himself that screamed something
was utterly wrong. Darting through the frail wooden door, Zakuun was
approached by the most horrific life-shattering sight - there was his
mother with a dull look on her face, lifelessly dangling from a simple
noose. "A simple knot", Zakuun thought to himself, "so simple..." He was
trying as hard as he could to hold back the tidal waves of emotion with
any distraction but his attempts were failing. He fell to his knees as
the sobs came pouring out, unsure what even to think or say. What would
he do? Who did this? Where would he go? Why his mother? Why...
Blindly turning towards the door to run away from this horrendous scene,
Zakuun never had a chance to react to the hand that latched over his
beak. Before even panic could settle in, his hands were tied
lightning-fast and he was half-dragged, half shoved into a shadowed
corner of an adjacent room. As he began to fight against his captor, an
old voice whispered "Shhhh, any noise and we die." Normally in this type
of situation, most would respond to the more deadly undertone (that
you're going to die) and not the more important one that Zakuun caught -
that he said "we". Deciding to trust his logic and a gut feeling that it
was truthful, Zakuun and his hopefully friendly captor watched as a
cloaked figure entered from the back entrance. Pushing the swinging
corpse out of his way, the figure leaned over the floor and held his hand
to the ground - but most importantly, revealing his face... an unknown
but an arial with a foreboding look. Seemingly angered by something he
gathered from touching the floor, he stormed out after a quick
surveillance of the home....and somehow the room seemed to brighten as he
left.
...important date!

The captor's grasp lightened on Zakuun and the bonds untied as quickly as
they had been applied. Still unable to turn and look because his mind was
swarming with thought, Zakuun heard a familiar voice. "Yah lucky I herd
da noise, boy." Slightly stunned from his dazed state, Zakuun answered
the old familiar beggar that Arkham knew as Snaggs. "If you heard the
noise, you could have saved her!" Dusting himself off as he rose, the
almost decrepit looking man stood to the chorus of crackling bones and
grunted with relief. "I'm too olds ta fight the likes of him and I saved
yer ungrateful ass, didna I? Hmmm?" Blushing from the thought of how rude
he sounded to the man that saved his life, Zakuun was about to apologize
when Snaggs shushed him. "We aien't got time to be stayin' here, and iz
gonna take some time to try and get ya in - they hatin' kids usually.
Assumin' ya aien't got no grub or family to take ya?" Utterly confused at
this point with everything, Zakuun just responded with a flat "Huh?" With
a half toothless smile, Snaggs helped the boy up and with an overly
strong slap to the back he blurted out what would be the next step in
Zakuun's life.
"I'm gettin' ya into the Guild. It's a funny kinda family but a boy
needs'm - Big Momma'll feed ya and well, just avoid makin' fun of his
beard. You'll scrap a livin'... and jus mebbe you'll survive. Say ya
blessin' and goodbye quick and ya betta hurry, or we'll be late!"
Zakuun almost said "Yes, mother" as he followed Snaggs and headed out the
door.

The applicant was nervously fidgeting with his robes as he awaited the
elder Obelkonol. He was tapping his feet when his mentor finally entered
the room. Before he could even get seated, the applicant blurted out "I
was attacked!" After a slight pause for genuine concern, Obelkonol looked
the young one over and asked "When did it happen?" said Obelkonol. "I was
walking back to my room when I was suddenly accosted! He came out of
nowhere, master, and knocked me out! I awoke with my hands and feet
tied....it, it was horrible!"
That was when Obelkonol first broke his stoic view and smiled softly.
"Were you hurt?" The applicant was taken aback and answered, "Well, not
really...but what does tha-" "And was anything taken?" Again the
applicant didn't understand the question in context. "Well, no but I
was-" Obelkonol pressed the issue and asked "Did anyone else witness
this?" "Thinking back sir, another elder may have been seen but..."
Obelkonol smiled softly and almost laughed a little.
"Let me tell you a story, Jimmy. You see, there was this class once given
in the monastery. Open to the public as always, we had a strange young
man attend who waited in the back. As the instructor walked forward to
the class, just as he was about to engage he tripped on something and
ripped his robe - right up the back! Oh the crowd roared for a moment but
in that moment we had all learned something valuable - we laughed
together. In the young man's defense, he had a valid reason. It wasn't
really that harmful and yes, it probably had a hint of disrespect but it
was meant only as a simple prank....something us old stoic men forget
when we're alone in the mountains for years. Now over time, it's gotten a
little out of hand maybe - new students are usually "hazed" a bit to
spark some bonding and sure, the occasional prank may interrupt studies
or even cause a bit of chaos but we live near a harsh world Jimmy. People
come to kill us for no good reason and the lesson to be on your toes is
nothing bad to pull from this. Every time that young man visits, it's
like a sheep dog inside the chicken roost - it may ruffle some feathers
but it's not a fox. Now.... your pride may hurt, but you are generally ok
right?"
The applicant looked almost shameful that he hadn't gotten the point but
Obelkonol rose with a soft sigh and patted the young man on the shoulder
reassuringly. "It's ok boy, we all need to learn sometimes the harder
way. It's in your best interest to learn from this - keep your eyes open.
You never know what can come at you. If you want to be an elder someday,
sometimes you just have to..." With a quick motion, he lashed outward
into the nearby wardrobe and latched onto something! A young avian begin
to laugh and slowly exited the wardrobe, wiping a tear from his eye.
Obelkonol ruffled the avian's head feathers and said, "Sometimes to
prevent violence - simulate it."

Arriving home was rough and definitely harder than Zakuun had expected.
Having left his hometown to move out into the main continent, when he
arrived at his old home several years later...it seemed like a lifetime
of difference had occurred. Most of his "family" of the guild had moved
on or kicked the proverbial bucket. A few familiar faces smiled as the
once-young avian returned, although he could see the hints that there was
a look of betrayal in their eyes. He had indeed left them, a smaller
guild to move to the Sultan's desert city. The pain of knowing daily that
down a one of the streets was the remains of his youth was too much...
and he did believe he would improve under a more well-known guild. Even
though he had improved and the art of binding your foe was special to
him, he knew the moment immediately when he walked into his old guild
leader he had made a mistake.
"So ya came to see how us common folk are, eh Zak?"
His coarse voice cracked with a hint of pain, his old mentor's throat
holding a new scar where something had tore out a chunk of flesh. Zakuun
couldn't even answer him as a wave of guilt rolled over him. He had been
selfish of his own path to leave the small guild to the whims of the
harbor city that is constantly under assault from the shadows. Lowering
his head almost sheepishly, the old man reached out and grasped his
shoulder. "It's ok, boy, I know. Dunna hold it against ya fer what ya
did."
"Boy?" Zakuun returned with his humorous smirk. "A boy left but a man
returned - with a plan." He returned the heartfelt grasp and patted his
old mentor on the shoulder. "And what be that Zak? I canna see much
coming out of this little city's ragtaggers..." Zakuun's eyes began to
shimmer with a purplish glow as he seemingly stared into the far
distance. "It's time we call in an investor to help us out." The guild
leader blinked with disbelief. "And who's gunna be this saint?"
"Not a saint...the Lord Twist of Magic. When you aim, aim big."
The Dream
Added Mon Jun 13 15:05:39 2011 at level 51:
Lying in a comfy corner of the Arkham Guild, Zakuun took a moment to grab
a quick nap. The war had been on their side for quite some time now and
despite the cries of their foes about being dishonorable, his skills had
helped the Fortress become effective. "Being honorable is a goal but not
a rule" was his mantra - you must fight not to become your enemies but at
the same time, death was ultimately their fate and was not conditional
because it might hurt his pride. As he cuddled up in his guild and tried
to doze off, he just could not calm his mind. As of late, his mind had
become nearly uncontrollable when he needed to lose focus - it was as if
the magic he had learned had eaten away at some of his less useful
regions of his brain...numbing to reality was not an option and dreaming
almost impossible. Grumbling as he reached into his stash, he brought
forth a shot of poppy juice - down the hatch and into dreamland....
It was a recent memory as the blurred world began to take form. The
Marshall and Elder Prophet were along with Zakuun and they were headed
out to slay some dragons when out of the shadows came this writhing
sludge of a person, too small to be anything but a svirfnebli. It reached
forth begging with a hand glittered in jewels as the three passed by...
"Take me with you - I need more shinies...." Zakuun recognized the
sniveling thief as Thelana - a common "gear whore" thief known out in the
land for their greed. It was rumored they had even paid off the Empire
and others to not harm them so they could relish shiny gear alone in dark
places. Zakuun turned to the half-svirf half-goo being and firmly said
"No."
The thing began screeching like a banshee, wailing with fake sobs as it's
form began to splash it's filth around in fake agony. "But I needs it, I
inspire others to explore.... I'm not of your war.... meeeee...." Zakuun
turned and walked away through the foggy dreamworld but the gelatinous
monster followed with it's hollow child-like cries. "No!" exclaimed
Zakuun and the form began to shrink. Firmly, Zakuun responded "Our war is
half against complacency. I'm not feeding an addict their next "fix" of
pure greed - you're a self-righteous glutton who hides underneath the
shadows of us in our war and has the gall to PAY our enemies to leave
them alone?! I will not idly agree to have some life leech tag along
while we better this world." The raging monster shrunk with every word
and was soon the size of an incessant fly that buzzed around the three.
Zakuun in a fit of anger swatted at the fly as it said "Why do you
dislike me....waaaaa". Just as he did, he awoke to the guildmaster
standing over him with quite a large frown. Apparently, Zakuun had
slapped him. After profusely apologizing to the old man as he mumbled
off, Zakuun saw a hint of blood in his hand....and lost himself in deep
thought.

Twist says 'Perhaps lay out what it is you want.'
Twist says 'So, you want to learn more about magic.'
Twist says 'As you know, I believe strongly in Honesty.'
Twist says 'You serve one of the forces that causes imbalance in the
lands.'
Twist says 'Almost anyone can read a scroll, Zakuun.'
Twist says 'Goodbye, Zakuun.'
Zakuun was running the conversation through his mind over and over -
something didn't feel right. It wasn't the obvious rejection and
belittlement of his Arkham guild - he had half expected that kind of
return from the Lord Twist. The problem was much more simpler than that -
it was what his response was to the question "what is it you want". He
probably came across as a needy student, grasping for fruits of magic
from the Lord of Magic - but really it wasn't the true reason he wanted
to talk with Twist. It wasn't learning something new, or even something
to improve his guild as he originally thought. It was deeper.
He wanted more tools to fight the darkness back - Zakuun has always
thought he was lacking despite his success as of late. Each victory in
his mind had a reason for success that didn't involve him - either
through others' aid or his enemy's fault. Confidence for a thief isn't
exactly common when in direct war daily. The more he thought about it...
he laughed about the conversation. Ironically, what he really wanted
directly conflicted with Lord Twist's beliefs. I humorous that the
question had given him the answer...only after he got it wrong.
So with a little more resolute answer and a small confidence boost in his
step, Zakuun Arcii would continue seeking what he wanted through another
avenue - hopefully Lord Adekar knew something of the written words of
angels. Lord Twist said he didn't have magical talent, but he had heart.
