Role
Zanzar-Deception-The Puppet Master-1
Added Fri Sep 30 22:33:33 2022 at level 20:
Zanzar is a sphere deception master manipulator, who was born with the gift of
a golden voice and a silver tongue. His father was a tax collector in the
Empire and spent years skimming coins from them, until he was captured, made
Anathema and executed. Zanzar was too young to take the bloodoath so he was
placed in the slave ship Zulghinlour's Curse, and was forced into a life of
servitude as the Captain's steward.
Zanzar quickly realized there was power in his position to be exploited, he
grew, he observed the politics before him, and he soon learned secrets and
knowledge were far more powerful than any blade. Also, that every man has a
price, it is simply a matter of motivation and persuasion. Zanzar used his
wily tongue and words to plan a mutiny of the ship, porting it at Arkham and
having the crew rebel against the Captain for the promise of gold in the
treasury. After the Captain was dead and the crew was out drinking in
celebration, Zanzar paid cutthroats to kill them all for the price of the
ship, and quietly offloaded the treasure into his own bank.
Zanzar does not speak of his family, father or past in fear it will compromise
him within the Empire. He is, after all, the son of an Anathema and the cause
of one of the Empire's finest three ship's destruction. Still he feels he can
use his lies, persuasion, and silver tongue to rise in the Empire. He chose
the Empire because a man can rise and fall by his reputation there, and his
desire to have a revered reputation will lend itself well to the political
wars within. The pen is mightier than the sword, and a whisper can topple the
strongest of sects from within. He seeks to release controlled chaos and to
use the distractions and infighting to seize power when opportunity presents
itself. Only he truly knows his endgame.
Zanzar is exotic, long winded and extremely vain. He often speaks in the third
person about himself, enjoys adoration and recognition, and is always
weaseling into the favor of others in one way or another. He speaks in an
exotic, broken Theran accent to hide his origins and seem like he is from a
far away land. Zanzar is a gambler, he is not afraid to play the political
game of manipulation within the Empire to ensure he stays in favor. Being a
puppet master, his ultimate goal is to be the War Master. His thinking is why
wear the crown, when you can wear the crown in all but name by whispering his
own vanity into the Emperor's ear.
Because of his pride, vanity, and his name to go down in the histories, he
finds himself aligned most with Morius, and plans on seeking out the dark god
for favor and aid with his deception, the Grand performance. Though not born
under one of his spheres, Zanzar is confident in himself and brave enough to
try and win the adoration of Morius, in time ultimately becoming his favorite
dark curse upon the lands as others trembled before his revere.

Added Fri Sep 30 22:35:44 2022 at level 20:
The Grand Performance-The Grand Deception-The grand performance is a phrase
Zanzar uses to intentionally muddy the waters and cause confusion in those
around him. This is a large part of his charismatic lies and where his silver
tongue comes in best. He says it is many things, ultimately he will use it as
a carrot on a stick for many to look forward to some grand event...that will
never come. Zanzar himself is the Grand Performance, and bettering himself,
his position in the Empire or with the gods, or seeing his foes brought low
are all technically part of the grand performance, as it furthers his
reputation and fame. Zanzar wishes to live in infamy or fame, but he will be
remembered forever.
The Blood Tax-Zanzar is extremely self centered, unless it is his duty by
imperial law to lift a finger to assist, he will not likely do so without
there being a self benefit there. His desire is to stand out in the blade
sect, not below the other sects. He pays for favor when he needs it and he
expects the same. Zanzar often offers the indifferent, gnome or otherwise that
would not typically be given the bloodoath a blood tax, a sacrifice to him and
the Empire of flesh to show their goodwill moving forward. Any who refuse it
are hunted anyways and the blood tax is taken either way. Zanzar uses this to
assert dominance over his peers and show that persuasion can often be a better
tool than brute force. By talking people into their own demise, Zanzar has
forged the ultimate control over his subject and will maintain a dominance
over them his whole life.
The game has begun

Zanzar sat in lavish comfort in his sect hall, watching coins from his purse
roll from his fingers in the coffers. He had done well, all things considered.
He had arrived on the mainland unnoticed, unrecognized and with a new identity
and riches to back him. The War master seemed invested in him. He had a way of
making himself valuable to the Empire, while slowly building his reputation.
Politically, he had hundreds of gold passed around to various individuals for
future favor. People's allegiances were so easily bought, it was rarely a
challenge. But this served him well for now. He had not yet approached the
dark gods, many plans were still being intricately weaved, pieces placed on
the game board that could move in many ways. For now, he needed to establish
to his enemies that he was a threat, and enemies were plentiful. Furthering
his reputation as a force to be reasoned with while being careful to select
the proper alliance within the Empire to work with, if any.
He was playing a dangerous game, one with mortal consequences, but the reward
to him was worth the risks. He had thought of all the cunning moves that he
had made to get him where he was, some hard lessons, some simpler, but always
traveling and learning more and more each day. Though his powers of persuasion
are not magical, he has been seeking dark alternatives though magical
artifacts to supplement his own menacing war songs. Secrets long lost to Thera
would not stay secret to him long, but what information in the days to come
would have the most value, which would elevate him? He had a lot to think
about as he stepped forward as a more vocal force in the imperial army, but
the time was near. For now, he would continue the Blood tax in the name of the
Empire, and cement himself as a true champion and conqueror among his peers.
The woes of weak Warmasters
Added Thu Oct 6 14:23:54 2022 at level 20:
Another Day, Another Dead Warmaster. Another rise of an Emperor. Zanzar never
admired the last two War Masters, he was promised the seat from Thokran, and
the fool placed an elder, but weaker blade in his seat. Now they were both
dead, and Zanzar pondered his position in the sect hall once more with his
large chests of riches. He was not worried though. Watching his peers and
lessers fail was a delight for him. Nobody could match his wits in his mind,
certainly he was the sharpest kind in the Empire, if not the most devious and
unpredictable. Zanzar despised being the only worthy blade in the Empire, he
knew his sect was stronger than the rest of the Empire combined. Had crushed
countless foes under his heels, forced and conned his way into his blood
taxes, and subjugated new lands. His guild title was not a good representation
of his true skills. Perhaps it was time to roll the dice, and take a chance to
further his position. If weak blades would continue to present themselves,
perhaps Zanzar would offer himself to the Emperor and Destuvius as the
superior alternative. If his guild title is not enough for the Emperor, then
let the fool place another weak War Master on the council. Zanzar knew all
that he desired would be his in time. He had even talked a strong villager
into taking his own life in the shrine of Morius, a willing sacrifice in fear
and awe of Zanzar. His reputation was growing, even the new Emperor had
already all but said he was the only reasonable choice and strength of the
blades. How could he show it, and leave all doubt behind?

He had made a rival of the Chancellor, by attempting to steal the adoration of
his god. He had a good gauge of his enemy now, one who clearly was foolish
enough to think he was as grand as Zanzar himself. Zanzar used his connection
with Morius to gauge the Chancellor's desires, now it was time to crush him.
He would renounce Morius, denying the Chancellor his ultimate wish of turning
him to the pit through Morius. The first notes of the Grand Performance are
beginning to come together for Zanzar, he would weaken the morale of the
Chancellor now, and bring his boot to a heel when the time was right. Whispers
of a new dark god of the Empire emerged. One who would truly appreciate the
Grand Performance in all its glory, one that does not dwell blind in a dark
pit in the ground. Zanzar sparked at the thought of a proper lord of the
Empire to adore him for his Performance, and set out to find this lord as a
suitable audience for his Grand Performance.
Zanzar-Character Notes Update 1
Added Thu Oct 27 13:58:17 2022 at level 40:
Zanzar has evolved a great deal in his life, and as he has evolved, so has his
perception of the Grand Performance. Like any great thing, it has evolved.
Zanzar is its Orchestrator, but even to him the first few notes have even been
revealed. His first note, weakening the chasm and demoralizing the Chancellor
that desired him in the church and in the pit of darkness as his servant. To
demoralize the Chancellor further, he acknowledged his part in the Grand
Performance, and renounced the church and its teachings. He boldly claims he
was too Grand for the pit in the ground, and the Chasm, but felt rejected and
angered that Morius never adored him for his Grand Performance, and will hunt
or hinder followers of the church to lower Morius below his new and favored
adored god, Rillan.
Zanzar could not have been more pleased at the Imperial god Rillan emerging
from the heavens. He knew Morius would adore him, but never thought Morius
would adore his Grand Performance, there was too much structure to it, like a
finely threaded needle weaving the notes on cloth. It was easy for him to
discard the dark lord, as he had ignored Zanzar and to Zanzar, this was the
greatest insult. Zanzar feels that the imperial god Rillan will appreciate
what he is trying to do with his Grand Performance. Zanzar seeks to impress
the god before he approaches him, and hopes to do so by including his
He has become greatly famous, with many people in the Empire and Thera simply
referring to him as, "The Zanzar". This is important to him, the War Master
position is the position he desires most. To be the finest blade, and to be in
the ear of the Emperor. He does not want to climb with ambition too high, when
you are at the top there is nowhere to go but down. Zanzar wishes to influence
the top, while also holding his own sect and position in the Empire.
Zanzar has several spies that have sworn to the Grand Performance, Zanzar's
legacy on the land. Zanzar is soon to address his disciples, as he calls them,
giving them each tasks to start moving information around Zanzar can find
useful to ensure he is on the path to unraveling the mystery that will become
the Grand Performance, as it has proven to be too Grand for Zanzar to truly
comprehend in its entirety. He has infiltrated the heralds, the village, and
the spire. Zanzar has no desire to work with the light, or chaos, so he will
not have any of the Chasm, Refuge or Fortress be a part of the Grand
Performance, unless it is in a place of sorrow and death.
Zanzar-Character Notes Update 2
Added Thu Oct 27 13:59:32 2022 at level 40:
Zanzar has not offered the blood tax in some time, but will still offer it as
he needs to replenish his disciples to watch over the lands and give him the
information needed to compose the next note, as he would call it. Finding
loyal followers that keep the workings of his group was of most importance. He
could influence from within the Empire, but having puppets on strings early,
easily wooed by gold or trinkets was vital. Using them for the Grand
Performance after they had grown into positions of power, or positions he
needed influence in was his goal. He chooses very few, and even fewer now, as
followers of the Lord Rillan will understand the Grand Performance more than
the average Theran, and be less likely to betray him.
Zanzar's goal is still control on a higher level than he can ever achieve
alone. The Empire will not conquer Thera in his lifetime, nor will law reign
over all the lands. But Zanzar can do what he can to leave a lasting mark on
Thera that will never be forgotten. His Grand Performance will be the pinnacle
of his life's work, something worthy of leaving behind as an example to others
to adore for years to come under darkness and order.
The Maestro Master of War
Added Thu Nov 17 00:33:38 2022 at level 51:
Success in the face of all odds. Zanzar had pulled all the strings he had,
played a dangerous game by putting the Shadow lord against the Emperor over
something so simple as a treasure, and Zanzar's silver tongue and resources
had paid off. His events set off a chain reaction that exposed the Shadow Lord
as a traitorous fool, and Zanzar had promised the now new Shadow Lord that he
would make the seat vacant for him. Zanzar now had immense favor from the
Shadow Lord, in his pocket in many ways. Even if the Emperor feared his rise,
it was inevitable. The War Master placed between him and the Emperor was dead
and gone, and Zanzar had finally been named the War Master as he deserved. He
had influence and control now, but the stakes had never been higher. This was
no time for Zanzar to rest, at the height of his renown. As he was pulling his
strings, the sects had fallen apart. The Empire's army had dwindled down, the
Emperor's only care seeming to be the souls he put in his spear.
Zanzar was displeased at the state of the army. There was rarely an army at
all, and few other than the Shadow Lord he respected that would face the
fiercest odds with him. The Shadow Lord was a good shield, he was reckless
with his life at times but this allowed Zanzar to survey the battlefield and
learn his enemies tactics. He was a master tactician, he had been defeated but
had never fallen in battle. He was of no use to the Empire as a broken body,
and his reputation stood far above his own skills. He needed to carefully
choose his tactics as he recruited with the bloodoath, and built up his sect.
He would make the other sect leaders look poor by finding the finest fighters
in the lands and building up the blade sect. If the Emperor would not build an
army, then Zanzar would. And that army would have loyalties to him, enabling
him to deeply influence each of the sects from the bottom up. It would not be
an easy task, but he was committed to success.
The Sorrowsong-1
Added Fri Dec 9 19:56:33 2022 at level 51:
Zanzar wrapped his fur cloak tightly around him as he marched slowly down a
snow covered mountain road at the far ends of Thera, returning to the borders
of the known explored world. This was a tradition for Zanzar every Yule-tide,
nobody knew where he went for the month. He had an elite blade finally, and he
had left him watching the sect while he attended his personal matters. He
needed time to reflect, away from the War, away from the Palace. Far away from
what was known to the average Theran, to the places people only whisper of in
rumors. He had learned much in his time away, he had a special place to spend
his time that had forged him into the man he was today, the place he learned
the Sorrowsong. Zanzar took Sorrowsong for his last name, but only he truly
knew the meaning of it. As an Anathema, when he escaped his slave ship, Zanzar
had needed a place to hide out while he assessed his situation. He had marched
on and on, into the mountains until the roads stopped and further still.
Further than anyone dared to go, even the reach of the Empire was not this
long. He came across a tribe of no more than thirty, not savage by any means,
but simple. They welcomed him without question, which was strange to Zanzar in
his youth even, but beggars could not be choosers, and he could trust nobody
in Thera in his vulnerable state.
He learned that this tribe had fled from Thera because the advancement of the
world would inevitably lead to chaos and carnage. They were structured, but
simple. Everybody had jobs or tasks, and everybody contributed. Because of
this, they lived in a bubble utopian society. Zanzar always had a quick
tongue, and was well traveled from his journey there. He wanted to learn to
perform and influence others more. This was when he became a Bard by trade,
learning the ways of the song. Music was not celebratory though for this
tribe, it was a haunting remembrance of the consequences of allowing chaos to
seep into structured society. A true tragedy. They called their music the
Sorrowsong, and Zanzar spent two years there learning to sing their songs. It
was like nothing the Theran world had heard, haunting melodies of an ancient
time passed on through the generations. It was powerful and moving.
The Sorrowsong-2
Added Fri Dec 9 20:03:26 2022 at level 51:
Zanzar appreciated the ways of the tribe. But as perfect as they were, Zanzar
had ambitions on a much larger scale. But he had learned valuable lessons in
his time there. He would not flee from the Empire and live in exile, but hide
in plain sight and join it, make it his own, forge it into what he wishes it
to be. Using the examples and lessons he had learned from the tribe, and his
new musical talents, the idea of the Grand Performance was born. The perfect
working army, society, and Empire, the Grandest scale of perfection that could
ever be. The very fire that brought him to where he was today, was born in the
village he still visited every year. Zanzar returned each year as a showing of
respect and gratitude, as well as to share songs and tales. This year he had
gone for advice as well, he was facing down a big task, overthrowing the
Emperor. Everything in his life was riding on his next movements, it was live
or die with dangerous moves like this. He had gathered the insight he needed,
while thinking on the task the lord Rillan had given him to study and
interpret his sacred tenants. He had been gone a month, he did not know the
Empire he was returning to. The army was living on scraps and trade had ground
to a halt. All recruitment efforts had failed. The Emperor was content with
letting the Empire crumble, and Zanzar would not tolerate that. It was him or
the Emperor. He would do everything he could to show the Lords of the Empire
that only he could revive the Empire, and to do so, Varkal must be unseated,
or the Empire may never fully recover.
Zanzar the Emperor of Thera, The Grand Era, A Stronger Foundation
Added Fri Dec 30 14:43:27 2022 at level 51:
Zanzar had achieved his goals. The culmination of his life's work. The Grand
Performance, his great deceptions, it had all led him to the throne he swore
he would take as an anathema child, sold away as a slave.
Deception had served Zanzar well. It had become part of who he was. Dishonesty
flowed through his veins. But he found himself dissatisfied with the game of
it anymore, the manipulation for the sake of manipulation. It had become
enough he had outlasted and outwitted his foes. His Empire had grown, he had
risen to the point where he had the influence he needed. His deceptions had
uses, but they were tools. They were not a strong foundation to build his
Empire on. He would be looked at closely now for leadership, and to be an
example. Deception shows weakness, and it must be hidden. Because of that,
Zanzar has pledged to shed his deceptions, and only use his tools when his
influence fails to keep his Empire together.
It was a time of change for Zanzar. No longer relying on deception, he truly
felt he had become a man of the people. It was as if a large weight had been
lifted off his chest, and he was free to act of his own accord. He was
fiercely defensive of his subjects, every citizen was important to him. He
realized he was just not as young as he used to be, he was surrounded by a
young council, young citizens. He was aware his age may be seen as a weakness,
it was important to him to show strength. He was at the top of the mountain,
but to stay there, he would need to remain firmly grounded and aware. His
priorities were building the Empire, and maintaining the proper balance of
order. His sect leaders were fine choices, but he did not wish any of them to
get too comfortable, or too complacent. Instead of pitting them against each
other, he would have them worry about the rising prospects of the growing
Empire. He decided it would be hard for them to build a foundation on so many
hungry and eager prospects the way Zanzar had.
He was focused on his legacy now. Leaving the Empire in the better state it
was in when he entered it, marching the Grand marches, waging a war of
conquest and glory, and humbling himself to become closer to the Lord Rillan.
He still had a desire to please the Lord. His legacy went hand in hand with
pleasing him, and Zanzar still has that deep desire inside to be adored and
recognized. He would find that in his loyal subjects and in serving the Empire
with each day he had left, however long or short that may be.
The blinding price of failure
Added Tue Jan 3 16:49:45 2023 at level 51:
Zanzar knew he had failed when the Lord Rillan and Destuvius confronted him in
the throne room. He could not deny his fate, it was true that he could not
find a suitable shadow worth taking a seat on his Council. It burned when the
dark lord Destuvius cursed his eyes, but Zanzar held strong and shed no tears.
It was a penalty, if there are to be risks and rewards, there must be equal
gifts and punishments for success and failure. The Emperor was not exempt from
the expectations of the Lords of the Empire, and while Zanzar is disappointed
he failed his lord after all his rising, he is determined to stay the course
and continue his path to bring the Empire to glory and in a better state than
it was most of his life. He would focus his full attention on the shadow sect.
It would be dangerous taking his eyes off the rest of the council to give it
his utmost attention, but fortune favors the bold, and Zanzar feels another
failure will cost him everything. He would fill his council, he would have a
working Empire, and the march would continue. He had grown wise and patient in
his old age, and his desire to please the lord Rillan and prove himself worthy
of his chosen had never been stronger.
The twice risen Minstrel

Zanzar had finally done it. It had taken him most of his life, far past the
years of his prime, but he had become the undisputed and undeniable Emperor of
Thera. It had taken some promises, cost him a great deal of personal wealth,
and came with conditions that allowed him to keep his council satisfied, but
he was once again, Emperor of Thera. Twice Risen now, the Zanzar no longer
sees himself as a subtle Prophet tilting the scales of power in favor, but a
Herald of the days of the Imperial reign to come. He was still a master of
deception, but made sure to avoid using any in the days before the vote.
Zanzar desired to know if the Empire had lost faith in him, or if they still
saw the hope of a glorious reign to come. Now that questions had been laid
aside, Zanzar was focused on consolidating his forces and making them
stronger, while pushing out on a vast recruitment spree.
The Zanzar knew it was the Lord Rillan that had helped forge him into the man
he was today, rather than the man he was when he came to his shrine, the first
day he lay eyes on the massive statue in his temple. He had guided Zanzar, and
pushed him beyond expectations. Zanzar had often felt like an unwanted child,
but the Lord had never given up on him. Zanzar was beginning to think that the
Lord saw his potential, and pushed him to succeed and prove his skills harder
than he had ever had to do in his life. He had unlocked power inside Zanzar
not even he knew he had, an unbreakable will growing stronger each day. His
enemies only fueled his inner fire to build his forces into strong troops of
war, capable of mercilessly crushing the Empire's enemies that had pushed him
at all fronts. The Zanzar had lost many battles, but he saw an opportunity to
win the war if he was tactical and precise. The difficulty would be finding a
War Master to meet his standards. Zanzar was confident he would bolster the
ranks of the blade once more.
He awaited the Lord Rillan. What would he say of him? What would he do?
Failure had been met with severe punishment, Zanzar expected the Lord may
execute him should he fail again. One thing was for certain in all of this.
Zanzar had learned that it is not always just the rise, but how gracefully you
fall. Sometimes a man falls to rise even higher the next time. It is also hard
to fall, when you are standing on a mountain instead of a flimsy ladder.
Zanzar would do all he must to keep his mind sharp politically, his body ready
for war, and his tongue wet with ale to demoralize his foes as he gracefully
dismembers them. The time of the rising Empire had come.
His name was Death. And with him were Four Horsemen.

The Zanzar had raised his council He was finally the undisputed Emperor, and
he had the start of his army. His marches had been bountiful, and his enemies
were falling before the might of the Empire one by one. His council was
fierce, and each had been chosen carefully for their skills, their culture,
and the way the Zanzar felt they impacted the Empire.
Tevophelia, the Viper of the Empire
Perhaps Zanzar's greatest and longest living ally is the High Priestess. She
is second only to Zanzar and is clearly the most ferocious and deadly of all
of his council. She uses poisons with masterful precision, making her enemies
suffer before they die. She is cunning, ambitious, and a priest of Rillan.
Zanzar expected a grueling fight for this vote, and still to this day does not
know if the High Priestess voted for him or not. He adores her, but he knows
her Lord well, as he also praises Rillan, and would expect nothing less of one
of his followers to look for any weakness to rise up above him. He watches
Tevophelia the most closely, because he considers her the only true danger to
his seat on the throne. He knows he is growing old, and the younger High
Priestess leads with confidence. The Zanzar may die on the throne, but if he
does not, it would be the doing of the High Priestess. Because she will be
such a boon to the Empire after his death, and Zanzar cares only for the
status of the army, he must keep her happy and close, but just out of reach of
the peak of his power.
Tileza, the Bone Twister
The Shadow Lady Tileza is a lady of few words and many secrets. She has proven
herself to Zanzar time and time again with grit and determination, a will to
serve the Empire fully and excellent eyes for scouting. She comes and goes,
dancing in and out of the shadows gracefully. Zanzar does not feel as
threatened by Tileza, he feels he has made enough of an impact on the Shadow
Lady to keep her comfortable. She was extremely useful in combat, always
seeming to break the right limb or kick somebodies legs out from under them.
Deadly in her own right, Zanzar appeases to the Shadow Lady by appealing to
her desire for fineries and luxury. Zanzar had never met a shadow that did not
like wealth and possessions. He hopes to keep the Shadow Lady in line with
greed and glory.

someone the High Priestess would barely stand to tolerate. Repulsive as he
was, Finx was fierce on the battlefield. He comes for war, and comes for
blood. He is fearless, truly fearless in his pursuit of conquest. Finx is of
low intelligence, but his battlefield IQ is far above the normal for his kind.
He is simple, and therefore stays grounded in what is in front of him. He
expects a great deal from his Blades, so he is critical of him. It is unlikely
Zanzar will ever see a blade truly worthy of the title of War Master, as he
felt he was the Grandest ever.
Zrannaiw, the Black Disease
Zanzar knew very little of Zrannaiw. Brought in to the Empire by the Lord
Rillan himself, Zanzar is waiting for him to prove himself worthy of the seat.
Zanzar has only met him once in his life, and hopes to see him more. Many
eager blacks have been bothering Zanzar about seeing him, and Zanzar has noted
the complaints. He does not wish an uprising in a sect, but also wishes to
give the Dreadlord a chance to prove they are as committed to the other blacks
first. He knows that they desire to delve into the ghoul tunnels to become a
mummy. Would they fail, or succeed? Zanzar was unsure, but he knew that most
necromancers ambitions and lust for power grow greatly with the becoming. On
one hand, a undead monster in the Empire would be a useful tool. But three?
That was enough Black sect power to bear down on the Empire, bringing
imbalance to the ranks and possibly pushing the Zanzar out. Dealing with the
black sect is tricky and dangerous, but Zanzar is prepared to navigate his
relationship with the sect the best he can.
