Before you stands a mighty titan. At nearly 14 feet tall this massive brute's frame supports hundreds of pounds with relative and surprisingly limber ease. His skin is a light green and maintains a light blue hue. His face is long and broad with prominent cheek and jaw bones. The entire left side of his face is covered with a large runic tattoo that disappears into his shoulder black hair. His eyes are a piercing blue that seem to be very alert. STORY: The Price of Glory

Added Sun Dec 11 22:08:38 2011 at level 1:
The Galdoran clan is one that reaches back countless generations. A simple
line of fishermen, merchants, and the occasional soldier their name was not
well known on their isolated, yet large Island home.

A mere generation ago one of the Galdoran family longed for something more.
He had heard of the battles far away and of the heroes that fought them.
Their home, the Krasthian Islands, had a small yet fierce army but with
the notable exception of pirates they had little "action". Certainly no
foes worthy of being immortalized in a bard's song, let alone the texts
of the great libraries. This man, named Askelian Galdoran, decided that if
greatness would not come to him, he would defy his destiny and find it.

Setting out into the depths of the great ocean Askelian began a month long
serach for the rumoured wreckage of a duergar ship that was said to be
carrying a "great relic" of the Gods. Askelian eventually found the ship
and the cargo was as promised, however it was a relic of the kind of
forgotten Gods who did not look kindly upon those born of the great storm.

Back in the quiet safety of an above water cave Askelian opened the ancient
chest. In a flash he was knocked back and before him stood a small, winged
creature.

The creature's demeanor was as draconian as his appearance. "You freed me,
giant. For that I am in your debt. What is it you seek?" Askelian, still
frozen in fear of the being hesitated before stumbling over his words:
"I... uh... glory... I seek... I seek glory for my name!"

"Ah... yes, yes. It is good to see that greed drives even the most golden
of auras in this age. It is not much different than the last time I was
free. You will have what you seek, but however in return I will have what
I seek, as well. The first born of your first born will be ours. Golden
aura be damned, he will serve my Master."

Askelian paused and contemplated the offer before him. Glory, fame, fortune
in exchange for one of his descendants? Surely his sons would sire many
sons as well, what was one in exchange for the good that the others could
do?

And so Askelian agreed and in another flash the being was gone. On his way
back home Askelian encountered another ship of pirates and in a fierce
battle ended them all. This was the first of many "victories" that were
guided not by his skill, but by his dark pact. As he grew in the ranks of
the Krasthian military he married the daughter of a noble (an odd
arrangement for one of common stock, but the rulers liked to keep the army
close) who was of rare physical beauty, and from this union came their
first son, Zeurane.

STORY: The General's Son.

Added Sun Dec 11 22:10:11 2011 at level 1:
Askelian never told anyone of his pact with the dark creature. He rode the
highs of his "glory" to a great standing within the military where he
reached the rank of General. However it was politics that truly interested
Askelian. His marriage to the Senator's daughter was just a stepping stone
toward greatness. He sired three more chidren, a girl and two more boys.
All of his children were beautiful by the standards of the Storm-born.
Especially Zeurane, who also showed the most promise as a soldier. Born
under the stars of Victory he has been obsessed with combat, leadership,
and strategy since he was old enough to lift a wooden practice blade. All
around him took note of this inherent ability, all except for his father
who loathed the boy before he drew his first breath.

Askelian was incapable of looking at Zeurane without being reminded of his
pact. While he himself was not bothered by the dark creatures he often saw
the shadows stirring around the crib of Zeurane. He no longer felt
"protected" by the dark being, as Zeurane was now their interest for it
would be he would sire the vessel they desired. This served as further
motivation for Askelian to get out of the military life as he was essentially
worthless on the field of battle. He lacked the tactical mind and fearless
nature that his young son seemed to exhibit.

As the months turned to years Zeurane was educated by the best scholars that
money and magic could bring to the isolated Island. He learned to think
many moves ahead of his enemy. He learned history from the gnomes, and
proper mannerisms from the High Elves. He was becoming the jewel of the
Galdoran clan, much to the dismay of his father who did not like to share
the spotlight with anyone, let alone someone who was the manifestation of
everything he wanted to be.

And so Askelian sought to get Zeurane away from him, and to outwit the
dark creature at the same time. He went before the Senate and proposed a new
Order within the army which he called the Guardsmen of the Great Sea. In
this Askelian proposed a mobile force of elite soldiers who would protect
the High Council (the inner core of the Senate) and patrol out past the
shore for enemy forces. All members of the Order would swear an oath of
service and in doing so vow to never leave the Order until death, never
take up any other occupation (including politics) and never marry nor bear
children.

Askelian sealed the proposal by offering his own first born son, Zeurane
as the first recruit for the new Order.

STORY: Life as a Guardsman.

Added Sun Dec 11 22:11:02 2011 at level 1:
Zeurane took well to life in the new Order. He and the other recruits
(which numbered near thirty) moved into an old castle over looking the
shore. They trained daily and it soon became obvious to the officers
tasked with overseeing the Order that Zeurane showed the most promise
both as a soldier and as a leader.

They took note of his loyalty both to his comrades and to his family.
Despite his father's lack of interest it was Zeurane's top priority to
make him, and the rest of his Ancestors, proud. He assumed (wrongly)
that Askelian's nature was simply a matter of tough love.

When not training for combat the men spent their days studying details
of old battles, the successes and failures of past officers, and forming
bonds of brotherhood. Being the elite guard of their homeland was a great
honour both to the individual and their family.

Some of the men mourned not being able to continue their family line but
it did not bother Zeurane. War was to be his bride, and battle his
mistress. The victories that followed would serve as his children, his
legacy, his chance at eternity. Afterall, his father had accomplished it
surely it was his destiny as well.

As the men became more able they set out on patrols. Most ended with
nothing but open seas, but occasionally they would battle pirates, or
slavetraders. It was never enough for Zeurane, though. And he longed
for what lie over the horizon: real, absolute, ancient war.

STORY: A Deal is a Deal.

Added Sun Dec 11 22:11:43 2011 at level 1:
Once Zeurane was gone to the Guard it became easy for the aging Askelian
to forget not only of his son, but of the deal which he had made decades
earlier: the son of a son for glory on the field of battle. Since Zeurane
left he no longer noticed the shadows in his home stirring, nor did he
feel nearly as guilty. Out of sight, out of mind, as they say. Life was
good, he thought. Finally... good. His moment of happiness was shattered
when he heard the screams coming from outside. He moved to the window and
saw a storm-born woman, covered in blood. "The Fire Giants come!" she
screamed.

"Fire giants?" He thought. "Impossible." Then he heard the voice that had
haunted him for years come from behind him and to the left: "Nothing is
impossible, General."

Turning slowly his eyes met the winged, scaled creature he had freed from
the chest. "Nice home we have here, General." the being said. "I say 'we'
of course because it is as much mine as it is yours. It was my magic which
made you seem God-like on the field, and it was my magic which elevated you
from a mere fisherman to royalty. And MY magic was granted to you because of
our deal. Certainly you remember? It was the one you attempted to defy with
this 'Guard' of yours. I couldn't have that, but thankfully I had a back up
plan. The fire-born were just as eager to work with me as you were. They
will take your son, crush your kingdom, defile your wife and daughter, and
the world will forget you ever lived."

Askelian stood in silent shock. He attempted to find his words but nothing
came out except an audible sigh. With the wave of a scaled, boney hand
the creature uttered an incantation and the old General's heart gave out.
He died in the middle of his study, not on the field of battle.

The Siege of Krasthian.

Added Sun Dec 11 22:12:48 2011 at level 1:
Zeurane and his comrades knew of the Fire Giants long before any, including
Askelian, did. They were surprised to find their cursed cousins not only
on boats, but also walking the bottom of the sea as though protected by
a great magic.

The battle was fierce but the Guardsmen lived up to their reputation as
being the elite of the Krasthian Army. Zeurane led much of the defense,
despite breaking most of his ribs early in the battle.

Hours turned to days and the Guardsmen continued to anchor the center of
the battle line, flanked to either side by the general forces of the army.
When news reached of Askelian's death it was reported that the General
had a heart attack upon seeing the invading forces. Zeurane mourned his
father, and the fact he didn't get to die as he lived: in battle.

His whole life Zeurane had noticed that the shadows near him seemed to
"live." They moved, and he often heard whispering in the dead of night
despite there being no one in the room. His father told him he was mad,
but his mother (a truly good soul) taught him in the ways of prayer and
the importance of living a "good" life, as well as being a "good" soldier.
More importantly she taught him the difference. She, and the royal healers
noted Zeurane's aura was a more brilliant gold than most, namely Aseklian's
who's often seemed more grey than gold. They assumed that this is why the
forces of darkness took interest in the young giant.

Once the siege began he noticed these shadows were more obvious in their
movements. A wise soldier, he also noticed that none of the fire giants
seemed truly intent on killing him, unlike the other storm-born who they
slaughtered ruthlessly. His commanding officer noticed this as well, but
no words were shared on the subject.

Days turned to weeks and the lines held solid. Countless had died on both
sides but the Krasthian royal family feared of a long standing war. An
isolated island like theirs relied heavily on trade for vital supplies and
shipments from Seantryn Modan or Hamsah Mu'tazz were slow to come with
fears of being caught in the middle of a war.

When orders came from the top to send one to the mainlands as an emissary
of the King to seek aid from the great Theran kingdoms and the Fortress
of Light it was an easy choice for Zeurane's commanding officers. They
would send the Galdoran for two reasons: He was capable of the task, and
also to test the theory that it was Zeurane these beasts wanted, not the
Island as a whole.

And so Zeurane set forth for the mainlands. The dark creature grinned as
he watched from afar. He was still bound by the oath of his Guard, until
he took another kind of oath. Perhaps to the Fortress itself? Then it
would only be a matter of time until he sired what the creature had waited
so long for: an heir.

NOTES: Origins of the creature, the pact, and the future.

Added Sun Dec 11 22:13:23 2011 at level 1:
1) The creature is not a devil, nor a demon. It is a formerly good soul which
has been corrupted and embraced by dark magic. His apperance, which is ghastly
is part of the dark transformation. His shadow magic is very powerful, but he
can be killed. He was locked in the chest early in the fifth age by a mage
who he was attempting to use as a vessel. After being freed by Askelian he
continued his search for another pure soul to corrupt. The soul must be a first
born child. He chose to take Askelian's first born's first grandchild because
he needed time to regain his strength, and he also thought it would be easier
for Askelian to accept if it wasn't his own son.

2) The creature does not approach Zeurane directly because he fears that if the
giant learns of pact made with his father he will never breed. Instead the
creature watches from the shadows.

3) The creature cannot claim just anyone. It's important that there is a deal
in place for the soul of the new born. While Zeurane did not agree (and never
would) to this agreement, his father did on his behalf, and that ancestral
agreement is sufficient for the creature.

4) It is important to the creature that Zeurane joins the Fortress of Light
as a Squire because this oath will replace his current vow to the Guard which
keeps him from breeding. The creature will do whatever he can to keep Zeurane
from returning to his home Island.

5) Zeurane notices the shadows stirring near him on a near constant basis.
While he no longer fears it, it does confuse him and he desires answers.

STORY: Life in Voralian City.

Added Sun Dec 11 22:14:09 2011 at level 1:
Zeurane arrived in the mainlands and plead his case to any who would listen.
From the court of the Sultan, to balanced walking mercenaries in Arkham.
When he was about to approach the Fortress for their aid new orders arrived
from home.

They were simple, and blunt. The Siege had ended, and the fire giants had
retreated. Zeurane was to stay in the mainlands and become a Squire of the
Fortress. As emissary of the royal family he would serve as a bridge to
the mighty Fortress should the Island ever need aid again.

In reality the fire giants hadn't been defeated. They had simply stopped
their assault once their target had left. The royal family's advisors
realized this and decided that keeping the talented swordsmith at arms
length was best for the kingdom.

While in Voralian City Zeurane continued his warrior's training. He also
took note of local soldiers, mercanaries, and unaffiliated warriors praying
to Lord Akresius, patron Lord of Generals and enlisted grunts alike. Zeurane
found familiarity in the faith's emphasis on the importance of victory at all
costs while retaining the beauty and honour of the battle. Zeurane has sworn
his life in service to the Lord General, and will seek his audience when he
feels he is worthy.

He now travels Thera with the intent of slaying all that is vile. His primary
goal is to fulfill his standing orders to enlist as a Squire within the
Fortress.

NOTES: On behaviour, beliefs, speech, and comraderie.

Added Sun Dec 11 22:15:07 2011 at level 1:
1) Zeurane knows nothing about his father's deal with the shadow mage and still
thinks highly of the deceased General. He intends to name his first born son
after his father.

2) Zeurane considers his golden aura to be his most important asset. He
approaches war as a bloodstained veteran but understands that one must remain
"above" his barbarian foes. Examples of this include Zeurane's refusal to
break the law (unless absolutely necessary). He believes that the law will be
a necessity after the war and intends to bridge a closer relationship between
the Spire and the Fortress. He would ultimately like to see the Spire's doors
closed to all with a red aura and the Fortress barred from breaking law in any
situation.

3) Zeurane does not like, nor trust chaotic beings. His background and his
current life are rooted deeply in military order and tradition. The fact
that chaotic beings are incapable of embracing this life makes it difficult for
Zeurane to relate to them.

4) Zeurane considers Paladins to be the manifestation of good in the world and
will do anything to aid the Knight-Priests in their mission against evil.

5) Zeurane considers all who serve with him to be his brothers. He will kill
and die for his comrades. However he is also quick to "correct" his brothers
when they fall out of protocol. This may prove to be a detriment within the
Fortress as they lack a true military mold.

6) His faith in Akresius is as firm as his faith in the light. He believes that
serving the Lord makes him a better soldier.

7) His hatred of Fire Giants stems far beyond the Siege. He considers them to
be the corruption of goodness. He considers it part of his mission to rid Thera
of their black hides.

8) He is eloquent for a giant. His education was intense and diverse. However
he tends to save his words and keep most of his private thoughts to his journal.

9) He takes leadership very seriously. He will follow his superiors orders
without any question and will do his best to lead and educate those below him
both in battle and in general knowledge of the lands.

10) His appreciation of order does not extend to the Empire. He considers them
to be the greatest threat to the Light in Thera, especially if they should
combine forces with the Spire on any level.

11) While he does not hunt those of the balance he has no respect for them
either. He wants those around him to be either 100% committed to the war. He
despises shopkeepers who sell arms to the shadowwalkers and profit from their
actions the most. Ultimately he will not hunt them as they are not his mission
but should one get in the way and die in the process he will not mourn them
either.
