Description

A slender elf, skin darkened by sun and toughened by wind. His hair is an iridescent, midnight black, thick and tied neatly in a queue draped over his left shoulder. A face with the handsome, chiseled features of the deep woods is unguarded, open, conveying a universal sense of innocence. Only the shadows lurking behind his glowing gray eyes betray a sense of trouble, or danger. He wears a few pieces of second-hand armor, colored with natural dyes and making nary a sound. From a rope tied around his waist hang a few sticks and stones, stained black with what could only be blood. His movements are quick, spare, and graceful. A step, or a glance, then nothing but utter calm and stillness.'In motion he seems less and less like an intelligent, ancient elf, and more like a conscienceless apex predator of the untouched wilds. From his sharp cheekbones to his hairline, and back to the tips of his ears, the expanse of tanned skin is covered with line drawings of idealized flame. The fires burn brightly in shades from a sanguine, poisonous-berry red to a bright, pollen-dusted yellow. In this strange setting his stormy eyes are scintillating.

Role

My village, burned, pt. 1

Added Fri Jul 8 08:14:15 2011 at level 1:
Through sun-dappled glade and frost-streaked switchback I ran. Never stopping
to rest, find a direction, or, most importantly, think. The blood and bones
of my family and friends, my tribe, darkened and drowned my memory
nevertheless. Keep running. Faces, races, reasons for my people's slaughter
weren't clear, nor could they ever be fully understood. A dispute over land,
a list of demands, a deadline. An army simply following orders. Just the
thought of the impersonal murderers burned in my gut like nausea, but I kept
running. I wished I could somehow shout through time to stop what had already
happened. I prayed to nothing in particular to undo the massacre. Take me
instead! But, of course, it doesn't work like that. Everything was changed
irrevocably, without malice or glee.

My soul grew cold as I ran.

Hours or months later I finally paused. High in the northern foothills I
looked down over the plains of my youth. On the horizon was a thick green
line, the ancestral forests of my people. To the right was a random valley
where I played and laughed one afternoon. The waterfall pool where I first
fell in love was somewhere to the left. The graveyard of glowing green grass,
fertilized by what had gone away, was behind me. That initial feeling of
unbearable grief had gone away too, but I found something new in its place.
An unexpected gift, at first like the fitful spark of kindling before the
fire fwumps to life. There in the icy place at the center of my being I found
a blaze of revenge. Also malice, yes, and glee too.

This dead thing, full of greed, called civilization, had fouled everything
good and pure. I could see its stains, smell its stench, all across the land
before me. Every road and city was a midden of misery, and all of it would be
held responsible for what I'd lost. Faced with its enormity I knew I couldn't
afford to stay cold forever. Moral as a hurricane, I'd sweep the dead thing
from my sight, and yet this slaughter would be personal. So very personal. In
my mind's eye it all crumbled and fell, with the unheeded cries for mercy
singing counterpoint to the chorus of my own screams. Like a raw nerve
exposed to undiluted rage, I howled at everything I hated till I was hoarse,
then croaked and coughed till I collapsed. I slept soundly for the first time
since it happened.

Pt. 2

Added Fri Jul 8 08:15:14 2011 at level 1:
Hunting for survival, killing in self-defense was all I knew. A few hundred
years of simple pleasure was all I ever aspired to. Now, with only
destruction left to live for, and nothing left to lose, I realized how empty
that old existence really was. The rush I felt as I learned to become a
murderer myself, to prove myself righteous, and them wicked, was unlike
anything I ever imagined. All sorrow melted away in the wilting heat of
purpose. Laughing at their misfortune! Oh... oh my, what a relief. I felt
drunk, and alive, and at peace, and somehow all of it at once.

And yet even in the throes of those savage moments I can sometimes feel a
pulse of portent. A sense of Significance sets even the quiet moments alight
with a softer, cleaner flame. If the fire does not consume its vessel too
quickly I could help bring something truly good out of all this evil piled
upon evil. A new beginning for those who survive, or even a renewal for the
world herself. It's a nice dream, one of the few pleasant feelings I have
left. But I all can really hope for is to be able to rest, one day, without
this terrible feeling of motion. To eventually die, one day, and set aside
the nausea and anger too. Maybe, one day, I can stop running.

Pt. 3, The Fireborne

Added Thu Jul 14 13:55:39 2011 at level 20:
I had strong weapons and good information. Maps of secret trails and an
introduction from the Huntress herself to the leaders of the Outlanders. The
shape of my battle-plan became apparent, but still... lurking within was the
sadness, uncertainty, and yes, fear that is only normal. Practical, for a
simple tribesman. What I lacked was the requisite boldness. The audacity to
commit to a cause that would bring no end of misery and pain, and almost
certainly end with ignominious death on some foreign field. A middling story
to tell around the campfire, and yet completely unbelievable to actually
undertake.

The answer came, with suitable irony, in death. As my soul floated between my
cold corpse, the menhir that kept me as a ghost, and that unknown world where
my people waited for me, the spirit came. Even without a body I could feel
the heat of its breath, hear the dry rasp of its whisper. "Thhhe Fireborrrrne
anssswerss youurrr ssssiilent prayersss, chiiild. Youuu requiiire powerssss,
ssstrength, yessss. Iii requiiire thhhe energiiies offf youurrr
conviiiiction. Doooo nooot feeear deathhh. Feeeearr yourrr liiiife liiiived
in tiiiimiiidity. Feeearr powerrrlesssnesss. Reeeealiiize yourrr dreeeammsss
offf vennngennnce!"

A deeply uncomfortable sweat broke out as I was reborn. My people's witches
trafficked with many spirits. Gentle rains, frigid winds, and imperious
stones answered to their arts. The Fireborne, by a fair margin, was the
worst. Merciless, vindictive, and utterly without equal for destructive
power. But without the tribe to appease it, the spirit would be... what?
Waiting patiently for a new tribe to honor it? Or waiting for any suitable
vessel to seek repayment in blood... I had my answer, and my first true ally.

Pt. 4, Gods, and talking to myself

Added Fri Jul 22 01:50:08 2011 at level 32:
As time slips away, as life leaves me and my enemies, the Fireborne gets more
cunning and dangerous. I think it should be painful, having this spirit of
disaster and mayhem inhabiting my soul, but I'm beginning to enjoy it. The
Fireborne speaks with my voice in the midst of combat, when dealing with
threats, menacing the opposition... but it never takes away my control. It
proclaims bold pronouncements, foolishly threatens mummies and ancient
shamans, but I agree with every word. Even if I would never say them myself.

But why? Why is this font of vigor, rage, and even a little bit of pure
evil... why is it so agreeable? Is the Fireborne testing me for something
greater? Is it toying with me? Is it even real... or did that day when I lost
my family break something inside of me? It is strangely exhilarating to be
afraid of yourself, of your own hidden power; it makes me feel so very
alive. I used to wonder if the Fireborne was a blessing or a curse. Now... I
don't care.

And the cause of the Ancients has made me appreciate blessings and curses in
a way the Fireborne could never show me. A softer part of me thought I was
joining a new family (weeee diddd notttt) but it is a gang. A mob. All wild
energy and marginal victories. Fortunately the wild energy is potent, and the
victories are satisfying, at least for a little while.

I know my revenge will end when I'm dead, but the urge to leave something
behind grows stronger. Something beautiful, inspiring. If not for me... then
for the tribe. I must spread the word of Thar-Eris as well as blood and
bonechips. And strangely it seems like that might be a more important legacy
than a few dead Imperials and my name scratched into the Totem. I think I
might have to lead them someday...

Then I encountered the Mansion. Gaudy, tasteless, unimaginable wealth of the
earth, and wealth of mortal energy, all crammed into a monument to the worst
civilization has to offer. I wanted to hate it. I wanted to turn my back and
never return. I tried, but the spark in my soul suddenly burned like the sun.
Daevryn, as a mortal man, would have been a prized, and loathed, enemy. Lord
Daevryn, as a god, was the one who would show us the way. For we saw the
metaphor the Mansion represented. We too strive to achieve the difficult. We
will always dream of the impossible.

Forrr weeee oonnllyy seee powwerrrr. Potennntialll. Vennngeance. Fuellll
forrr thhe fireeessss!

Harbinger

Added Sat Aug 6 13:07:42 2011 at level 45:
I have what I wanted. The goal, position, and respect I worked for is mine,
and it is sweet. I hold it not only for myself, and my tribe, but for all of
my kin, all wood-elves and all outcasts. But I've changed on the journey,
changed in unexpected ways. I see now it's not enough to rest here as
Harbinger. Because in lusting after power, and finally achieving it, I find
that the lust won't go away; it only grows stronger. I think I'm beginning
to understand the same impulse that drove whoever slaughtered my tribe. More,
always more -- there's never enough -- what an invigorating sickness!

Theee fiiireee burrrnss briiighterrr wheeeen itt connnsuumes. Buttt whennn
itt stoppsss feeeeding itt diessss.

I always knew the Fireborne's blessings would come with a price. This is it.
Of course, this burning drive for power and destruction and revenge will only
end when I do, but I never understood the other, darker meaning of that
truth.

Fortunately I still have too much pride to fall on my spear, so we will burn,
destroy, and grow bright as the sun. There's plenty of fuel out there in the
world. A city? No, start small. A defiler village. Lady Amaranthe said we are
here, in part, to be a natural consequence of our enemies' actions. So be it.
Naturally, we cannot count on the respect of our enemies, but we can make
them fear usssss...

Wishes for the Future

Added Fri Sep 23 21:17:40 2011 at level 51:
I wish... My mind is full of wishes. The lust for things I don't have, or may
never achieve. The patience to wait days in ambush. The force of will to lead
my brothers and sisters towards Thar-Eris. Strength to burn down all the
cities, and to freeze any opposition.

But every day the climb gets steeper. My weeks fighting through the Academy,
or decades learning the craft, even the centuries spent becoming Harbinger
look small and rosy from this distance. Diiid itt seeeem easssy, chiiild?
Weee stillll rememmberr the harrrrdshiip. Yes, I can see the summit from
here, but those last few steps are oh so daunting. Weee staaand sooo
cloooose. Pooower oofff godsss, Ancccient - annnnd otherwiiise.

The Tree, my part of it, is full, or nearly so. And yet those other
challenges, the ones that will carve our name in the holy totem, are still
ahead. Yessss. The killing of enemies who have already earned, or stolen,
want we want. Yessss. The daring, savvy, and, yes, luck that every true
champion wields. Yesss, aaaas weee burnnn everr brighterr, weee casssst ourrr
shaaadowww ever longerrrr.

The Fireborne wants it all, but I am only what I am. Instinct, skill, and
that still-undefinable spark that warms us both. So for now we wish the
Nowhere cleansed of the corrupt flame that infests it. Inexorable,
inevitable, impossible... maybe. Still, if I could turn one tiny patch of
that ash green again, if we could destroy even destruction itself, who knows
what other wishes might come true?
