Description
Taken to obscuring garb, little can be seen of this drow maidens frame but
the sleek grace so typical of her kind. Luxurious lengths of alabaster hair
spill past high cheekbones that frame a face of polished obsidian beauty. Yet
her deep carnelian eyes hold only a bored malice, as though cruelty is mere
routine. The habitual tapping of one finger against the hilt of a stygian
blade is her only wasted motion, a small and constant echo of sharp intent.
Role
Gray beginnings
Added Fri May 2 01:42:50 2025 at level 12:
Zulthrae was born to a family of mundane power, merchants of flesh in the deep.
Her childhood was spent among chained goblins, kobolds, and duergar, their eyes
downcast, their names irrelevant. From an early age, she learned that people
were coin, their worth measured in muscle or obedience. Friendship, trust, or
attachment were things she neither witnessed nor understood in her home.
She took to the blade not out of ambition, but because it proved more efficient
than the whip. In time, Zulthrae drifted from the family business into the
deadlier trade of assassination, where her detachment became her sharpest tool.
Contracts passed through her hands without weight, and death became a quiet
routine. With every kill, the world seemed smaller, its people less substantial.
Now she no longer hungers for the work, yet she endures it with the same habit
she tends her gear. The careful oiling of leather, the balance of daggers, the
flicker of a whetstone over steel these offer her the rare pleasure of craft.
To her, companions are needless, clients faceless, and only the perfection of
her tools reminds her she is still, in some way, alive.
Sylren the Master Songsmith, Painter of the Eternal Star
Added Fri May 2 17:12:02 2025 at level 15:
A whimsical creature who drifts through tension like a gnat through spider silk,
not noticing a thing. She employed my sight to pierce the shadows in search of
one Shae, who apparently owes her an adventure, and took my word at face value.
Must be a lush. Should remember to ply her with drink and exotic vittles in the
future. Mind as dim as a hooded lantern, should prove easy enough to prod
into proper use.
Leophanis Sheathed Blade.
Added Tue May 13 06:43:12 2025 at level 38:
A sarcastic fellow, not quick to anger. A very useful implement,
and mild-mannered enough that I do not mind his company. Of course,
this makes him the most dangerousfor the closest blade cuts first.
He had something of an altercation with Nees, which I will detail
in my report on that feline. He came away the better for it, as far
as can be observed. A passable composer of words, even if not to my
tastes. Perhaps it may be worth requesting something more suitably
themed for entertainmentlike The Thousand Screams of Flaying or
The Seven Agonies of Childbirth.
Sylren the bow
Added Sat May 24 19:19:16 2025 at level 51:
I must revise. Not a simple creature at all. Or perhaps the wrong phrasing.
Simple, but experienced. I think I will dub them Sylren the Bow. A simple
tool, its purpose: to deliver from afar a simple song, whether that be of
tool, death or promise.
Leophanis the bow
Added Sat May 24 19:26:02 2025 at level 51:
Again, a revision. This one is another kind of bow, one used to strum those
instruments he is so fond of. A bent implement, much like his spine, but he
does not bend too far, which is good. A shame, though, that he has played so
long he himself has become a sycophantic creature, only capable of singing
the tune of others.
It would be a mistake to believe him a simpleton, though. But at times, it is
the clever that quicken to their graves all the faster for that intellect.
I will not use this bow. It will break under my callouses and hasten me into
the grave right alongside him.
Mevnush the urn.
Added Sat May 24 19:32:40 2025 at level 51:
This one is an urn. An endless pit of avarice. I see it in its gaze.
It is not even a man. I may see most people as tools, but this one is
less a tool, more an object.
It is not a stomach, for it has no mouth with which to chew.
It fills itself with its gaze only. Belly swollen, but never full.
This one is easy to placate. Simple hungers, simple satisfactions.
It will be worth it, and unbothersome, to feed it.

The empire
Added Sat Jun 7 04:03:45 2025 at level 51:
I took a walk around the empire I serve recently and I felt something.
The gravewalker's are without a guard, the warrior's guild is without all but slack jawed servants.
i feel something...
No, no its gone, no wait its back.
Is... is this what sadness feels like?
I don't like it.
Am i good at fighting?
Added Sat Jun 7 05:46:47 2025 at level 51:
When the former emperor stated that I was a good fighter
I had assumed it was for morale or to embarrass the then shadow lord.
yet today i stand in defence of the council without equal hero assistance
against two shapeshifting sap drinkers from the tree and they fled in retreat.
Am I... good at fighting? I don't enjoy it yet still...
i wonder...

A drink, two drinks, three, and then Des was coming over, concern in his eyes.
"So whats your problem?" he asks me. The smug look in his eyes was gone.
"Mate, you wouldnt believe me."
"Oh?" he says, like he ain't sure if he wants whats brewing in mi' cups.
"Why dont you try me anyway."
"Feck, fine." Truth is, I was bursting to tell it. Feck... Feeeeeeck.
"There I was," I begin, noting half the joint had edged closer to listen.
They didnt think I was a loudmouth, did they?
"I was with my cart, selling olives like usual, edging near the palace gates.
The centurions hadnt yet noticed Id left my designated selling plot.
That day, I finally got close enough to hear the Vanquisher's voice.
I was sure today was the day shed fall into my tanned, worked arms.
I tried a few words, and it were going well, I thought.
Shed ignored my hourly olive offers, but the cold looks she gave me?
Chills down my spine. Just how I like my women. Cold. And bitchy."
I took a sip of beer. Most o the humblefolk were starin at me now.
Aghast, in horror even. Guess I was a better tale-teller than I thought.
"So then, this gnome walks past. Looked ragged, like he came from the fields.
His robe was decent though. Had some bandages. I toss him an olive.
Only the right neighborly thing to do.
He catches it, turns around with that big nose and squinty eyes.
Looks at me like I'm dirt."
"Now, where I come from, bein called dirts a compliment.
Were strong farmer folk. Thats somethin to be proud of.
So I give him a wave and a smile.

Poor feller must be more injured than I thought.
He looks confused, shrugs, and carries on toward the gate.
And thats when it happened."
I sip again. Folk are shakin their heads. And rightly so, I say.
Dont see many gnomes round here anyhow.
But here it comes. The big bit. I throw up my hands dramatic and say:
"And thats when it happens. My hands are up, and the gnome chases her.
And with a splurch, he turns into a pachyderm!"
Now some of 'em look like theyre askin with their eyes,
"What the feck is a pachyderm?"
"Well," I say, "a pachyderm is..."
"I had to ask that same question to a passing scholar.
He owed me a favor for fixin his cart a while back."
"If he was a passin scholar, howd you meet him befo"
"A pachyderm is what they call in some places an Ellie-pants.
Now I dont know who Ellie is or why this demon thing has her pants.
Some women got real sick tastes if you ask me."
The glare from the womenfolk didnt stop me. Id gone immune.
Had colder glares from better-shaped women. Vanquisher types.
"Its an elephant," someone says. "Theyre just animals."
"An elephant might be an animal, but this Ellie-pants was a demon.
Long nose, not like old mens, more like a snake. It wiggles.
Then its got horns out the sides of its cheeks.
Long, wicked things. Could gore an ox.
Tiny, beady eyes. And more meat on it than Dess sister!"
"Oy, feck off. Shes just goin through a rough patch!"
"So many patches you might as well call it a field, Des.
Anyway, this thing gores the Vanquisher.
The fights not goin well when this drow slips out the gate.
She throws dust in the things eyes.
Oh, the sound it makes, lads.
Its like Dess sister farted so hard she shat herself!"
"Seriously, Bram. Feck off."

"Right, so its blind. Its confused.
And Im thinkin, what in Darklords nut is she plannin
with that little dagger?
But to my horror, the Ellie-pants turns and charges down the street.
And its headin right for my cart."
"So I dive, but I aint no hero of the Empire. No chance Im fast enough.
I get hit by somethin, and Im thinkin, thats it lads.
Tell Dess sis" I catch Dess look.
"Ahem. Tell mi' mom I wont be at Thismoondays feast."
"Then I feel wind in my hair.
A hand grippin my wrist so hard the bones are creakin.
I look up, and there she is.
The drow bint. Holdin onto the buckin Ellie-pants,
swingin me behind it like a flag.
We fly down the street like a human kite.
Im terrified. Im pretty sure shes one o them Imperial Shadows.
And you dont ever see one unless youre about to bite it.
But she looks bored.
I realize thenthis one might be alright.
Shed dropped her only weapon to save my bacon.
Then she shouts through the wind:
You still owe this years taxes, Bram!
And another chill goes down my spine.
Not only does she know my name, she knows my tax records.
Then she tosses me onto a passin hay cart and shes gone.
The fightin gets quieter as they go deeper into the city."
"Tell you whatshe left an impression.
Comin to kill a man is one thing.
But knowin how he handles his coin? Thats worse.
Im just a nobody. Or so I thought."
"You never know about those Shadows, Bram," Des says.
"They know everything.
Sounds like she saved you cause you owe taxes."
"What? Nah. She likes me.
I got that chill feelin I get when women who like me look at me.
Didnt you hear the story?"
A pause.
Then someone else asks, "So... youre drinkin cause you lost your cart?"
"What? No. Im drinkin cause I couldnt find that Zulthrae bint after.
I owe her some olives."
Another pause. Some o the crowd... theyre lookin at me funny.
That aint pity in their eyes... has to be worry. Yeah, worry.
"Oh dont worry lads. Im at least up on the insurance payments.
Theyll pay out. Ill be back on my feet any day now."
A final pause.
Then the whole room bursts into laughter.
Couldnt tell you why.
